Vehicle Gateway installation guide for vehicles with a 9-Pin port

Step 1: Prepare for Installation

Ensure the vehicle is safe to install the Motive Vehicle Gateway:

Step 2: Locate the 9-Pin Port

Locate the 9-Pin port. This port is normally located on the driver's side underneath the dash panel and is black or green.

A diagram shows the interior of a vehicle's dashboard with numbered locations indicating potential 9-pin port positions.

Step 3: Connect the Y-Cable (if applicable)

For vehicles that require a Y-cable, one is available upon request. Motive recommends only using one Y-cable per vehicle when necessary.

Y-cables come with two unique harness mounts: a square mount with screws and a threaded mount with a nut.

A diagram illustrates two types of 9-pin connectors: one hexagonal and one square, both showing multiple pins.

Attach the 9-Pin Y-cable to the vehicle's 9-Pin port and replace the vehicle's exposed 9-Pin port with the matching end of the 9-Pin Y-cable.

Step 4: Connect the Vehicle Gateway

Connect and secure the 9-Pin end of the Motive cable to the vehicle's 9-Pin port.

A diagram shows the 9-pin connector being plugged into the vehicle's port, with a red cable extending from it.

Use the zip ties provided to secure the cables.

Attach the 15-pin connector to the Vehicle Gateway.

Secure the 15-pin connector onto the Vehicle Gateway using the thumbscrews.

Use the provided alcohol swabs to clean the mounting area.

Remove the backing from the adhesive strip on the back of the Vehicle Gateway and attach it to the mounting area.

Motive recommends installing the Vehicle Gateway near the windshield, as well as away from any vents, electrical components, and at least 12 inches away from any metal components.

The Vehicle Gateway may be installed in alternative locations, such as the wheel well, provided it meets the aforementioned requirements. Please ensure all cabling and devices are secured to avoid interfering with safe operation of the vehicle.

Once plugged in, the indicator lights will flash momentarily before turning solid red. After approximately one minute, the left-side indicator light will turn green indicating a successful GPS connection.

A diagram shows the Vehicle Gateway with indicator lights. Initially, lights are red, then the left light turns green.

Additionally, GPS/GNSS performance may degrade if the vehicle gateway does not have clear line of sight to the sky.

Step 5: Establish Bluetooth Connection

Once the driver connects to the Vehicle Gateway using the Driver App available on iOS and Android, the right-side indicator light will turn green indicating a successful Bluetooth connection.
