Grout Shield Grout Restoration System Grout Cleaner and Color Sealer
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Preparing the Surface:
Before applying Grout Shield Colour Seal, it is essential to prepare the grout surface. For the easiest application, it’s recommended that the grout is properly recessed. This can be done using a grout recess tool. The grout does not need to be stain-free but must be completely free of dirt. Grout is porous (like coloured concrete), and its pores can hold stains and dirt. The best way to clean the grout is with Grout Shield Grout & Tile Cleaner. Dilute the cleaner using 120–180ml per 4.5 litres of water. You can apply the cleaner to the tile and grout using a garden sprayer or mop. Allow the cleaner to sit for 5 minutes, then lightly scrub the tile and grout with a long-handled brush. Once scrubbed, dry the surface using a wet/dry vacuum or towel. The grout joints can be damp but not wet when applying the sealer.
Important: In bathrooms and high moisture areas, ensure the area has been kept dry for at least 48 hours prior to application and 48 hours post-application to allow for proper drying and absorption. This means no showering, bathing, cleaning, etc., in those areas during this time.
Application Instructions:
- Set Up: Prepare a bucket half-filled with clean, warm water and place the chamois cloths in the bucket.
- Applying the Sealer: Hold the bottle with the Yorker top pointed about 1.25cm from the wall or corner and gently squeeze to apply a thin line of sealer to the grout joint. If using an applicator brush, attach it to the nozzle, wrap your hand around the bottle and brush handle, and gently but firmly squeeze the bottle. Use the brush to spread the sealer into the grout.
- Finishing the Joint: After completing a section, use your fingertip to push the sealer to the wall or corner. Remove a chamois from the water bucket, wring it out until only damp, fold it in half, and lightly wipe over the grout joint to remove excess sealer from the tile without disturbing the grout joint. Rinse the chamois often to prevent sealer buildup on the tile.
- Sealing Parallel Joints: Start in one corner, working horizontally across each grout line. Once all parallel joints are sealed, allow them to dry to the touch (about 20 to 30 minutes) before proceeding to seal the perpendicular joints.
- Figure 1: Begin in one corner, working horizontally for every grout line, and follow in the opposite direction for the last row.
- Figure 2: Starting from the same corner, proceed to seal the grout lines vertically until the last grout line is sealed.

Curing & Maintenance:
- Curing: The sealer will dry to the touch within 30 minutes and fully harden and cure in 24 hours. It is crucial to remove any haze within 30 minutes of completing the application. After completing the job, dry buff the surface with a towel or polish pad to remove any residue. For areas where the residue is difficult to remove, mist with glass cleaner and buff again.
- Final Check: Once dried to the touch, check all grout joints for proper coverage.
Maintaining Your Grout:
For optimal and long-lasting results, follow these maintenance instructions:
After 24 hours, the colour seal will be fully cured. Regular maintenance should consist of only pH neutral or mild cleansers, which are all that is needed to effectively clean your tile and grout. We recommend our maintenance cleaning solution (available at www.groutshield.co.za). Damp mop your floor with a sponge or deck mop, then towel dry, removing excess water from grout lines and tiles. Removing excess water is essential to keep your grout lines bright and clean.
