If there is no power, unplug the machine, wait for 5 minutes, then plug it back in. If the issue persists, contact Gastroback Customer Service.

This appliance is designed for brewing coffee via clear drinking water and pre-ground coffee powder

The appliance is intended for private use and not for professional operation.
The appliance is intended for indoor use only. Use the appliance only as described in this manual. Any other use might lead to damage of the appliance, property or personal injury.

No liability will be accepted for damage resulting from improper use or non-compliance with this manual.

However, in any case, before leaving the appliance unattended, while it is live, ensure to prepare the appliance with due care for safe operation according to the instructions in this booklet. Additionally, ensure that the appliance will be accessible always immediately for a per-son, who is instructed accordingly. Otherwise, severe injuries and damage caused by moisture, high temperature, fire and electric shock may occur.
WARNING – RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK! Disconnect the appliance from the power supply, before assembling or disassembling any parts, moving or cleaning the appliance, and when it is not in use. Do NOT place or immerse the appliance or power cord in water or other liquids. Do NOT pour or drip any liquids onto the appliance or power cord. Always remove spilled liquids immediately. Do not lay desktop outlets or power cords on the workspace of the appliance.

When the appliance is live: Do NOT touch the appliance or the power plug with wet hands or while you are standing on a wet floor.
WARNING – RISK OF BURNS! On regular operation, large amounts of boiling water are given off via the appliance. There-fore, even the exterior of some parts of the appliance may be hot and hot steam may escape. During operation and sone time thereafter, do not hold any part of your body near parts, that may be hot or give off hot water or steam. If required, use appropriate gloves. The heating element surface is subject to residual heat after use.

Do not operate or store the appliance outdoors or in humid or wet areas.
Do not attempt to use this appliance for any other than the intended use, described in this booklet. Any other use, especially misuse, can cause severe injuries or damage by electric shock, overheating, fire, or high temperature.
Any operation, repair, exchange, and technical maintenance of the appliance or any part of it (e.g. power cord) other than described in these instructions may only be performed at an authorized service Centre. Please contact your dealer. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent or similarly qualified persons in order to avoid a hazard.

GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

This appliance is intended to be used in household and similar applications such as:
- staff kitchen areas in shops, offices and other working environments;
- farm houses;
- by clients in hotels, motels and other residential-type environments;
- bed and breakfast type environments.
Always switch off and unplug the appliance, before moving or cleaning it, or when the appliance is not in use. For moving the appliance, do not hold the appliance via the power cord, top lid, or brewing head.
Any use of accessories, attachments or spare parts that are not recommended by the manufacturer or damaged may result in injuries to persons and/or damage. Do not use the appliance or any part of the appliance with any other device or for any purpose not described in this booklet.
Check the entire appliance regularly for proper operation (e.g. over-heating, damage, leakage, malfunction). Do not attempt to operate the appliance, when the appliance or any part of it is likely to be damaged, and/or not working properly or when it has been subject to inadmissible strain (e.g. electrical or mechanical shock, overheating). If a malfunction occurs during operation, immediately unplug the appliance. If in doubt, get in contact with an authorized service centre for examination and/or repair. Do not attempt to repair any part of the appliance by yourself.
The dedicated carafe and carafe lid are obligatory parts for operating the appliance. Only operate the appliance with a carafe recommended by the manufacturer with the carafe lid closed correctly. Before operation, ensure that the carafe and carafe lid are completely undamaged and the carafe is EMPTY. Otherwise, large amounts of hot water may run out. Do not attempt to heat the carafe or to keep it warm on / in a range, warming plate or other type of foreign heat source. Do not use the carafe with any other appliance.
The workspace must be clean, dry, sufficiently stable and large, level, and resistent to water and heat. Do not place the appliance near the edge of the workspace. At all sides leave approx. 10 cm (4 inch) of free space to walls, other objects and the edge of the workspace. Above the appliance, leave a sufficient distance of free space for getting free access to the water tank and filter basket. Do not place the appliance or any part of it on or near sources of heat (e.g. burner, heater, oven).
This appliance can be used by persons (including children aged from 8 years on) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge, if they have been given supervision or instruction concerning the use of the appliance in a safe way and understand and handle with the hazards involved. Cleaning may be done by children aged from 8 years on under supervision only. Children may not play with the appliance or any part of the appliance or the packaging. Do not leave the appliance or any part of it unattended, when they are in reach of children younger than 8 years or animals.
Cleaning and user maintenance shall not be made by children without supervision.
To avoid injuries and damage caused by overflow, overheating, fire, and electric shock: Do not fill any liquids into the appliance that are not recommended in this booklet (see: ‘Important Notes for Opera-tion’). During filling, carefully observe the MAX filling level at the filling level indicator. Otherwise, water will run out at the overflow opening at the rear of the appliance.
Before starting the operation: Ensure that you have prepared the appliance correctly and completely according to the instructions in this booklet. This holds especially for any partly unattended operation via the timer.
Wet coffee grounds get mouldy easily. Always remove coffee grounds after the appliance cooled down.
Excessive scale deposits may damage the appliance. Clean and descale the appliance regularly to keep it in proper working order (see: ‘Care and Cleaning’). Exclusively use cleaning and descaling agents recommended in this booklet to avoid damage to your health and damage to the appliance caused by harmful and/or corrosive chemicals. Additionally, vapors of any type of descaler may irritate your respiratory tracts. Thus, during descaling, ensure good ventilation. Do not place the appliance or power cord into an automatic dishwasher.

IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS FOR ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES
The coffee maker shall not be placed in a cabinet when in use. The appliance is heating water to the boil via electrical heating elements and may only be connected to a correctly installed protective mains power supp-ly outlet (with earth/ground). Ensure that the ratings of your mains power supply correspond to the requirements of the appliance (220- 240 V ~, 50/60 Hz). If in doubt, contact your electrician for further information.

In various foreign countries, the specifications for power supplies are subject to incompatible norms. It is possible that power supplies in foreign countries do not meet the requirements for safe operation of the appliance. Before operating the appliance abroad, ensure that safe operation is possible.
Do NOT use any desktop multi socket outlet, external timer, remote control systems or extension cord. Use a wall power outlet that is always accessible during operation, so you can unplug the appliance immediately in any case of malfunction or danger.

Do not place any clothes, tissue or other foreign objects on, under or into the appliance. Do NOT operate the appliance on metal surfaces.
Do not place the appliance on a power cord. Do not lay desktop power outlets or power cords near the appliance. Power cords may not touch hot surfaces, moving parts, or sharp edges. Power cords may never be knotted, twisted, pulled, strained or squeezed. Do not let the plug or power cord hang over the edge of the workspace. Ensure that no one will pull the appliance by the power cord. Always grasp the plug for disconnecting the appliance from the power supply.
Even during intended use, large amounts of condensate build up on the inner surface of the top lid and drip, when opening the lid. Always wipe off moisture and droplets immediately for keeping the workspace dry.

Do not pour or spill any liquids on the appliance. Do not place or immerse the appliance in water or any other liquid. Immediately wipe off any liquids that ran out or have been spilled.

HIGH TEMPERATURE – RISK OF BURNS AND SCALDS
The appliance heats water to the boil (95-100°C). Therefore, even during intended use, some parts of the appliance may get hot. This holds especially for the top lid and all parts within the brewing chamber. Additionally, hot steam may escape and hot water may drip.

During operation and some time thereafter: Do not touch any possibly hot parts with your skin. Only touch the appliance and its parts at the operating elements (handles, buttons). Keep the top lid closed. Do not hold your hands or heat-sensitive objects under the brewing head.

Always wait until the appliance sufficiently cooled down (approx. 15 minutes), before opening the top lid and cleaning the appliance.

KNOWING YOUR FILTER COFFEE MACHINE

TIME DISPLAY : In standby mode and operating mode, the internal clock of the appliance is shown here. When setting up the timer, the start time is displayed.

CONTROL PANEL: Use the buttons to set the times and select the desired function.
- Min: for setting the minutes
- Prog: for selecting the timer mode
- On/Off: starting or cancelling a brewing cycle immediately
- Strength: toggles between normal strength and a somewhat higher strength of your coffee
- Hour: for setting the hours

DOUBLE-WALLED STAINLESS STEEL CARAFE with removable carafe lid.
FILLING LEVEL INDICATOR: Showing the contents of the water tank in number of cups.
HOUSING: With brewing head and permanently installed water tank at the backside.

SPRAYER WITH DRIP STOP VALVE: During brewing, hot water is given off here. The drip stop valve closes the filter basket automatically, when removing the carafe from the base.
TOP LID: Enabling access to the brewing chamber and water tank.
FILLING OPENING OF THE WATER TANK: We recommend a high and narrow vessel for filling.

COFFEE PERMANENT FILTER: Saves paper filters – protects the environment.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR OPERATION

Your new drip coffee maker may be operated with common paper filters size 4 or the reusable filter delivered with the appliance.

IMPORTANT – The carafe of the appliance is an obligatory part of the appliance. It cannot be replaced by any other carafe not recommended by the manufacturer. Without the carafe, correct operation is impossible and hot water may run out. Therefore, always ensure that the dedicated carafe is placed correctly in the appli-ance during operation.

During operation, you may take out the carafe for approx. 30 seconds at the maximum, because the drip stop closes the outlet opening in the filter basket, while the carafe is missing. However, replace the carafe as soon as possible to avoid overflow of the filter basket.
The amount of coffee that will be made is determined via the amount of water, you fill into the water tank. The appliance terminates the brewing cycle automatically, when the water tank is empty. This is intended. Therefore, the total brewing time depends on the amount of water in the water tank.
Brewing 10 cups of coffee will take approx. 9 -10 minutes.

REQUIRED WATER QUALITY

IMPORTANT – Only fill clear tap water or non-carbonized, low-mineral table water into the water tank. Carbonized water may damage the appliance! Do not use highly filtered water, mineral water or any other liquids, any foreign materials or additional ingredients for operation. Do not use coffee powder that is probably off.
The water quality may influence operation and lifetime of the appliance as well as the taste of your coffee. In most cases, cold fresh tap water is the best choice.
Always ensure to descale the appliance in time according to the following section

DESCALING

IMPORTANT – Excessive scale deposits in the water system of the appliance may damage the appliance and increase the energy consumption as well as the time required for brewing. Additionally, the taste of your coffee may be influenced. Therefore, always ensure to descale the appliance in time.

The required frequency of descaling depends on the water hardness of the water used and the actual usage of the appliance. Information on the tap water hardness may be given by your local water works. Please consider that the hardness may be influence by the state of the water pipes in your house. Therefore, it is best to use a common test strip for testing the water hardness.
Only when your tap water is very hard (high content of scale) or seems to be unsuited (e.g. very old water pipes) we recommend to use non-carbonized, low-mineral table water. In this case, please contact the bottling plant for information.
Use a descaler suited for coffee makers and espresso machines (main component: citric acid). Do NOT use vinegar. We recommend the GASTROBACK® Premium Descaler Item No.: 98175). This descaler contains special additives for preserving the lifetime of your coffee maker.

The entries in the following table give a rule of thumb. Descale the appliance at the latest in the following intervals.

IMPORTANT – For getting the optimum effect during descaling and avoiding damage to the appliance due to a too highly concentrated descaling solution, always mix the descaling solution with the required amount of water, before filling the solution into the water tank.
With a remainder of water noticeable at the filling level indicator of the water tank you should empty the water tank, before descaling. For this, you may start a brewing cycle without coffee powder (see: ‘Operation’).

THE STAINLESS STEEL CARAFE
The stainless steel carafe is thermally insulated and keeps your coffee warm without any heating. In fact, any external heating is useless. Therefore, the base plate of the appliance is not heated, thus saving energy.
The carafe lid is equipped with a pouring valve, which is closing the outlet of the carafe. For pouring, open the pouring valve by slightly pressing the lever at the carafe lid.

Please consider, that the time your coffee is kept hot depends on the filling level in the carafe. A full carafe keeps the temperature on a high level much better than an almost empty carafe. This effect can be observed with any type of thermally insulated vessel.
Another benefit of the stainless steel carafe is the hardiness. This carafe is suited for usage in areas, where a fragile glass carafe may get damaged easily (e.g. workshop).
IMPORTANT – Before starting a brewing cycle, it is essential to ensure that the carafe is really empty. Otherwise, large amounts for hot coffee may run out and cause damage due to hot water, electric shock and fire. This holds especially, when using the timer and leaving the appliance without supervision for some time.

THE COFFEE FILTER
The appliance is delivered with a durable reusable filter, which makes the usage of paper filters unnecessary. However, when using the reusable filter, small particles of the coffee powder will be at the bottom of the carafe. This is unavoidable. Simply pour the coffee slowly and leave a little amount in the carafe to avoid getting the particles into your cup. The amount of particles passing the filter depends on the quality of your grinder and the grind size.

If you wish a complete filtering effect, you need to use paper filters. Select size 4.
IMPORTANT – With noticeable large amounts of even large particles in the carafe, a solvable problem may be the reason. In this case, you find helpful instructions in chapter ‘Solving Problems’.

THE COFFEE POWDER

The brand of the coffee beans and the grind size are the crucial parameters for the taste of your coffee. In any case, prefer freshly ground coffee beans rather than pre-ground coffee. Additionally, buy coffee in small portions to avoid that your coffee gets old and stale. For preserving your well-being, do not use any coffee, which is probably off: e.g. with an unpleasant odour.
Use a medium grind size. Very finely ground coffee (e.g. for espresso machines) is not suited for drip coffee makers.

At the maximum, fill the filter up to half height (60 – 65 g, corresponding to 12-13 level small spoonful). However, always reduce the amount, when using a finer grind size, because in this case, the water may take some more time to run through.

DRIP STOP
The drip stop is located at the bottom of the filter basket, and opening the drain of the filter basket only, when the carafe lid is pushing it upwards. Therefore, you may remove the carafe for pouring a cup of coffee, even while a brewing cycle is still running.

While the brewing cycle is still running, at the latest after 30 seconds you must replace the carafe. Otherwise, the coffee cannot run out of the filter basket and large amounts of hot coffee may overflow.

IMPORTANT – Please consider that there may be still water in the filter basket, after the appliance completed the brewing cycle and the red control dot above the On/Off button goes out.
Especially when using the reusable filter, expect that some fine coffee particles will be flushed into the drip stop and stick to the surfaces. The result may be leakage of the drip stop. Therefore, when removing the carafe during brewing, always ensure that the drip stop closes the filter basket correctly. However, a few droplets may stick to the exterior of the filter basket and drip. This is normal and no evidence for leakage. If in doubt, replace the carafe immediately.
After each brewing cycle, flush the drip stop thoroughly for avoiding leakage (see: ‘Care and Cleaning’),

PROGRAMMED START VIA THE TIMER
This appliance is designed for restricted unattended operation via an integrated timer.

Before starting the timer, always ensure to prepare the appliance with due care for safe operation according to the instructions in this booklet. Additionally, ensure that the appliance will be accessible always immediately for a person, who is instructed accordingly.
IMPORTANT – For enabling safe operation, the timer will be deactivated automatically in the following cases:

Any interruption of the power supply.

Start of a brewing cycle, no matter in which way this is executed. There is no need to do this manually.
For starting the brewing cycle in time via the timer, you need to set up the internal clock of the appliance correctly. The internal clock and timer use the 24 hours format: 2 o’clock in the afternoon corresponds to 14:00.

CANCELLING AND RESUMING A BREWING CYCLE

For each brewing cycle, you should only fill in the amount of water, which is required for getting the desired amount of coffee and let the appliance operate until the brewing cycle is finished automatically (red control dot above the On/Off button goes out). This is an easy way for avoiding that large residues of water stay in the water tank and cause a stale taste of your next coffee.
Nevertheless, you can cancel any running brewing cycle at any time. Simply touch the On/Off button. You may restart a cancelled brewing cycle. Ensure that there is still a sufficient amount of water in the water tank. Then touch the On/Off button.

However, an interruption should only be short. Otherwise, the taste of your coffee may be affected unpleasantly. As a rule of thumb: when the coffee powder cooled down noticeably, it is better to start a completely new brewing cycle.

BEFORE FIRST USE
WARNING – DO NOT let children play with the appliance, or any part of it, or the packaging! Do not leave the appliance, any part of it, or the packaging unattended, when they are in reach of children and/or animals.

WARNING – Always unplug the appliance, before moving or clearing the appliance. Do not place or immerse the appliance or power cord in water or other liquids or spill any liquids on the exterior of the appliance or the power cord. The filling level in the water tank may not exceed the MAX filling line (10 cups, 1.25 litres). Surplus water will run out at the overflow opening at the rear of the appliance. Do not operate the appliance without the dedicated carafe. Wipe dry any spilled water immediately. Do not place the appliance or power cord in an automatic dishwasher.

Unpack the appliance and all accessories carefully. Check that no parts are damaged or missing (see: ‘Knowing Your Coffee Maker’). Carefully remove all shipping materials and promotional materials, but do not remove any warning or information labels (e.g. the model label).

Select a sufficiently large workspace near a suited wall power outlet. Ensure that the power outlet is always accessible. The workspace must be dry, stable, water-resistant and level (see: ‘Important Safeguards’).
Before first use and after an elongated period of storage, clean the appliance (see: ‘Care and Cleaning’).
Prepare the appliance for operation with the carafe and filter basket in place but without any coffee filter and coffee powder. Fill the water tank up to the MAX filling line and let the appliance operate until the brewing cycle is finished (see: “Operation”). Then, empty the carafe. The appliance is now ready for making coffee.

OPERATION

WARNING – Always ensure that the appliance and all its parts are out of reach of children younger than 8 years. Do not leave the appliance unattended, while it is in reach of young children and animals.

This appliance is intended for restricted unattended use. However, in any case, ensure to prepare the appliance for safe operation according to the instructions in this booklet, before leaving the appliance unattended, while it is live. Additionally, always ensure that the appliance is accessible immediately for a person, who is instructed accordingly. Otherwise, severe injuries and damage caused by hot water, fire and electricity may occur.
WARNING – RISK OF SCALDS AND BURNS During operation and some time thereafter, some parts of the appliance may get hot, hot steam may escape and hot water may drip. Always keep the top lid closed during operation. During operation and some time thereafter, only touch the appliance at its operating elements (buttons, handles). The heating plate will get hot, as soon as the appliance is switched on.

When liquids ran out, always immediately unplug the appliance and wipe dry the appliance and working space. Do not attempt to overfill the water tank. Any surplus water will run out at the rear of the appliance. Ensure that there is no leakage.
The dedicated carafe is an indispensable part for operating the appliance. Only operate the appliance with a carafe recommended by the manufacturer standing on the heating plate with the carafe lid closed correctly. Due to the drip stop at the bottom of the filter basket you may take out the carafe for some seconds (pouring a cup of coffee). But do not forget to place the carafe back onto the base plate of the appliance immediately thereafter. Otherwise large amounts of hot water may run out.

Please refer to the instructions in chapter ‘Important Notes for Operation’.

PREPARATION

Filling the water tank: Fill the desired amount of cold, clear drinking water into the water tank. We recommend to use a high and narrow vessel. The filling level must be between 500 ml (4 cups) and the MAX filling level (1.25 litres). Do not attempt to overfill the water tank.
Inserting the coffee filter: Place the filter basket into the filter holder in the front part of the brewing chamber. The filter basket must be turned to the correct orientation for making it slide down easily in place. Place the reusable filter into the filter basket. Alternatively, you may use a paper filter (size 4).
Fold back the seam of the paper filter. Then spread the filter within the filter basket and press the filter onto the inner walls of the filter basket for ensuring that the water does not run out at the exterior of the filter.

Filling in coffee powder: Fill the desired amount of coffee powder into the filter. Then close the top lid.
Preparing the carafe: Ensure that the carafe is completely empty. Close the carafe lid. Then place the carafe below the brewing head, where it must stand stably. Now, the appliance is ready for operation.
Insert the power plug into the wall power outlet. The default time of the appliance (12:00) is shown on the display.
Even after starting the brewing cycle the Strength function can be selected or deselected.

If you wish to enjoy your coffee somewhat stronger, then touch the Strength button
shortly. A red dot above the button illuminates, when this function is activated.
USING THE TIMER
As a result of using the timer, the appliance may be operated partly without thorough supervision. Thus, before starting the timer, always ensure that you prepared the appliance for operation completely and correctly according to the instructions in section ‘Preparation’.
Ensure that a person instructed accordingly, gets access immediately in any case of emergency.
You need to adjust the clock and timer of the appliance only, if you wish to start the brewing cycle at a preselected time. Whenever you touch the On/Off button, the brewing cycle starts or stops immediately, no matter, what else has been set.
For starting the brewing cycle at the desired time via the timer, you need to set the internal clock of the appliance correctly.
Setting the Clock
Connect the appliance to the power supply. The default setting of the internal clock illuminates.
Touch the buttons Hour and Min (minutes), until the actual time is shown.
The clock is operated in 24 hours mode. When keeping your finger on one of the time setting buttons, (Hour or Min) the assigned value is running on automatically, until you release the button.
Activating the Timer

Prepare the appliance thoroughly and completely for operation: fill in the desired amount of water, insert the filter basket with filter and coffee powder, place the empty carafe correctly below the brewing head (see: ‘Preparation’).
Set up the internal clock (see above).
Touch the Prog button. In the control line a white dot flashes and the default star-ting time of the timer is shown instead of the clock.

Set the desired starting time using the buttons Hour and Min (see: ‘Setting the Clock’).
With the desired starting time on the display, touch the Prog button again shortly. The white dot in the control line illuminates continuously and the clock is shown on the display again. As soon as the starting time is reached, the brewing cycle will start, indicated via the red dot above the On/Off button. The timer will be deactivated automatically.
Deactivating the Timer without Starting a Brewing Cycle
With the timer activated (white dot is illuminated continuously), shortly touch the Prog button. The white dot disappears, indicating that the appliance is in standby mode again.

STARTING A BREWING CYCLE MANUALLY

No matter, what you have been setting previously, you can start a brewing cycle immediately with one touch.
Simply touch the On/Off button. In the control line a red dot illuminates above the On/Off button, indicating that a brewing cycle is running.

When the timer mode has been activated (the white dot is illuminated continuously), there is no need to do anything for starting the cycle. The brewing cycle starts automatically as soon as the starting time is reached.
The timer will be deactivated, when starting a brewing cycle manually.

CANCELLING AND RESTARTING A BREWING CYCLE

You can cancel any running brewing cycle (red dot above the On/Off button is illuminated).
Simply touch the On/Off button.
If you wish to finish a cancelled brewing cycle, ensure that there is still water in the

water tank. Then touch the On/Off button again for restarting the brewing cycle.
To preserve the taste of the coffee, the interruption should be only short.

AFTER THE BREWING CYCLE

WARNING – Risk of Burns and Scalds After each brewing cycle and before opening the top lid, wait for at least 10 minutes. This will prevent injuries and damage due to hot condensate and steam. Although the drip stop closes the filter basket, if the carafe or filter basket is taken out of the appliance, some droplets may drip. Do not hold your hand below the filter basket or brewing head.
IMPORTANT – Coffee ground gets mouldy quite easily. For keeping your coffee maker in a hygienic state, after each brewing cycle, you need to empty and clean the filter basket and reusable filter in time. Do NOT dispose of coffee grounds in the sink, because it may clog the outlet pipe.
Dispose of coffee grounds in domestic waste or as compost. Paper filters need to be disposed of as domestic waste.

The stainless steel carafe is thermally insulated. Therefore, it keeps your coffee warm for a long time and any external heating would be useless. Thus, you should unplug the appliance immediately after brewing. Additionally, there is no need to use another insulated carafe.

After brewing coffee, wait until the brewing cycle is automatically finished (red dot above the On/Off button goes out). This way, you avoid leaving residues of water in the water tank, which may cause a stale taste of your next coffee.
After any brewing cycle, the appliance heats the heating plate for 40 minutes, before switching off with only the internal clock shown on the display. Therefore, if you wish to keep your coffee warm, leave the carafe standing on the heating plate of the appliance, while the appliance is still live.

Wait at least 10 minutes until the brewing chamber cooled down sufficiently (top lid is cold). Open the top lid and take the filter basket out by the handle (protruding flap on the front right side).
Take the coffee filter out of the filter basket. After using the reusable filter, empty the filter. Paper filters may be disposed of with the coffee grounds.
If you do not need the heating plate any longer, disconnect the appliance from the power supply. Otherwise, the heating plate will stay hot for up to 40 minutes, thus consuming energy uselessly.

Clean the removable parts of the appliance after each usage (see: ‘Care and Cleaning’).
After a brewing cycle is finished, always leave the appliance cool down for at least 15 minutes, before pouring water into the water tank. Otherwise large amounts of hot steam and splashes of hot water may escape from the water tank and the appliance may get damaged.
After brewing coffee, we recommend to wait until the brewing cycle is automatically finished (red dot above the On/Off button goes out). Alternatively, touch the On/Off button for cancelling the brewing cycle.
Leave the appliance cool down for at least 15 minutes.

Thereafter, you may fill the appliance again and start a new brewing cycle as described above.

CARE AND CLEANING

WARNING – Always ensure that the appliance and all its parts are out of reach of children younger than 8 years and animals. Always unplug the appliance and leave it cool down completely, before cleaning the appliance. Do not immerse or place the appliance or power cord in water or any other liquid. Do not spill or drip any liquids on the appliance or power cord. DO NOT place the appliance or power cord in an automatic dishwasher.
CAUTION – Do not use cleaning agents not recommended in this book-let (e.g. bleach, solvents, abrasive agents, unsuited descaler) to avoid damage to your health and leakage of the water system due to harmful and/or corrosive chemicals. For cleaning, only use warm dishwater.

DO NOT use hard or edged utensils to avoid damage to the surfaces and leakage of the water system. To not scratch or poke in the water tank. Do not use any clothes for wiping the interior of the water tank. Otherwise, small bits of fluff may get into the water system and clog the valves and pipes.
Avoid cleaning the removable parts of the appliance in an automatic dishwasher, because on regular usage, dishwasher agents may damage the surfaces. Additionally, additives in the cleaning agents of the dishwasher may affect the taste of your coffee.
Excessive scale deposits in the water system of the appliance may damage the appliance, increase the energy consumption, elongate the brewing time and affect the taste of your coffee. Aways ensure to descale the appliance in time (see: ‘Important Notes for Operation / Descaling’).

DESCALING

Only use descaling solutions recommended in this booklet to avoid damage to your health and/or damage to the machine. Vapors of any type of descaling solution may irritate your aspiration tract. Always ensure good ventilation during descaling.
You need approx.1250 ml descaling solution.

When a residue of water is noticeable at the filling level indicator you should empty the water tank, before descaling. In this case, insert the filter basket and empty carafe, then start a brewing cycle and leave the appliance operate, until the cycle is finished. Thereafter, empty and replace the carafe.

Preparing the descaler: Follow the instructions of the purchaser given on the package of the descaler for mixing the descaling solution.
Preparing the appliance: Ensure that the carafe is completely empty and the water system cooled down (at least 15 minutes after finishing the last brewing cycle). Place the carafe with the lid closed onto the base of the appliance and the filter basket into the filter holder (without any filter and coffee powder!). Then pour the descaling solution into the water tank up to the MAX filling line. Close the top lid.
Start a brewing cycle via touching the On/Off button and let the appliance operate approx. 60 seconds. Then touch the On/Off button again to cancel operation. Wait approx. 15 minutes.
Repeat step 3 at least once. With excessive scale deposits, repeat it 2-3 times.
Start the brewing cycle again and leave the descaling solution run through completely. Wait another 15 minutes.
Empty the carafe and replace it. Pour clear, cold water into the water tank up to the MAX filling line and close the top lid.
Touch the On/Off button and let the water run through completely.
Repeat the steps 6 and 7 another 2 times.
Rinse the filter basket and carafe thoroughly with running tap water. Thereafter, the appliance is ready for operation again.

CLEANING THE REMOVABLE PARTS

Unplug the appliance and wait until it cooled down sufficiently (at least 10 minutes).
Remove and empty the carafe completely. Remove the carafe lid and wash the carafe and lid in dishwater. Press the lever on the carafe lid and rinse the pouring valve thoroughly to remove any fine residues of coffee grounds.
Open the top lid and take out the filter basket with the coffee filter. Remove the coffee filter from the filter basket.
After using the reusable filter, empty the reusable filter. Do not dispose of coffee grounds in the sink to avoid clogging the outlet pipe. Coffee grounds and paper filters may be disposed of in domestic waste.
Wash the filter basket in warm dishwater. For removing any residues of fine coffee grounds from the drip stop, press the drip stop at the bottom of the filter basket and let dishwater run through.
IMPORTANT – Handle the reusable filter with care to avoid damage to the fine mesh. Do not use any sharp-edged objects for cleaning. A soft, fine nylon brush (e.g. tooth brush) is suited best.
Wash the reusable filter in warm dishwater. Ensure that the mesh of the reusable filter is not clogged. For this, hold the reusable filter up to the light. If required, soak the reusable filter for some minutes, then brush the mesh via a small, soft brush.
Rinse the removable parts of the appliance thoroughly via clear water and wipe dry.
Do not poke or scratch in the water tank to avoid damage to the pipes, hoses and valves of the water system. Do NOT use any clothes or similar utensils for wiping the interior of the water tank. Otherwise small bits of fluff may be flushed into the water system, clogging pipes and valves.
Cleaning the brewing chamber: Moisten a soft, clean cloth with clear water and wipe the inner side of the top lid carefully, for removing any residues of coffee and scale. Doing so, ensure to handle the water sprayer mounted on the top lid with special care to avoid damage.
In the same way, wipe any residues of coffee and scale from the conical holder of the filter basket.
Cleaning the exterior: Via a soft cloth moistened with some dishwater, wipe the exterior of the appliance and the power cord to remove any splashes. Especially ensure to remove any droplets and fingerprints from the complete area below the brewing head and at the front of the brewing head.
Thereafter, wipe with clear water. Then wipe dry. Leave the appliance dry naturally for approx. 30 minutes where it is out of reach of young children and animals.
Reassembling the appliance: Place the filter basket and reusable filter into the brewing chamber and close the top lid.

IMPORTANT – If the appliance is going unused for an elongated time (e.g. during holidays) or will be transported, please refer to chapter ‘Storage and Transport’.

STORAGE AND TRANSPORT

WARNING – Do not leave the appliance unattended, while it is in reach of children younger than 8 years and animals. Always unplug the appliance, when it is not in use.
Do not wipe the interior of the water tank with any type of clothes, because small bits of fluff may get into the water system, clogging pipes and valves.
Moving the appliance: Always remove the carafe first. Otherwise, the carafe may fall out and get damaged. Do not hold the appliance by the power cord, top lid or brewing head.
IMPORTANT – On normal use, a small amount of water will be left within the water system. Before the appliance is going unused for long and before transporting the appliance, always empty the water system completely according to the instructions below. This will avoid water damage, the build-up of harmful germs and algae in the water system and a stale taste of your next coffee.

Unplug the appliance and clean the appliance and all parts (see: ‘Care and Cleaning’).
Empty the water tank: Take out the removable parts (carafe, reusable filter, filter basket). Open the top lid. Then grasp the appliance at its back post and turn it carefully upside down over a sink or tub. Let the water run out completely.
Thereafter, with the top lid still open, leave the appliance dry naturally for at least 1 hour, where it is out of reach of children and animals.
Replace the filter basket and reusable filter and close the top lid.
If required, grasp the appliance at both sides and place it on a sufficiently stable, level and dry surface, where it is protected against inadmissible strain (e.g. falling down, mechanic shock, direct sunlight).
Place the carafe under the brewing head. You may lay the power cord loosely around the base of the appliance.

IMPORTANT – Do not place any heavy or hard objects on or in the appliance or any of its parts. The power cord may never be knotted, twisted, pulled, strained or squeezed. Do not leave the power cord hang down from the storing surface. Do not use the parts of the appliance for any other purpose than described in this booklet.

SOLVING PROBLEMS

If problems occur during usage, you will find solutions here.

When filling the water tank, a hissing noise is issued. Splashes and steam escape.	The appliance has been in operation just before and is still hot.	After each brewing cycle, leave the appliance cool down for at least 10 minutes, before filling the water tank again. Otherwise, the appliance may get damaged!
You cannot close the top lid correctly. DO NOT attempt to close the top lid with violence!	The filter basket is not inserted correctly.	Insert the filter basket in the correct orientation: the handle must be at the right front side (4 o’clock position).
	The paper filter is too large or you used an unsuited reusable filter.	Only use paper filters size 4 or the dedicated reusable filter of the appliance.

There are hissing and bubbling noises during operation.	This is normal.	No need to concern.
Water is accumulating on the base of the appliance and/or on the workspace. Unplug the appliance and wipe dry the appliance and workspace. Please keep in mind, that the water may be hot. Ensure that the appliance does not stand in a puddle.	You attempted to overfill the water tank.	There is an overflow opening at the back of the appliance for draining surplus water. This is intended. Always observe the MAX filling line.
	You do not use a suited carafe.	Only use a carafe that is recommended by the manufacturer for your appliance.
	The carafe is not placed correctly under the brewing head or the carafe lid is not closed correctly or damaged.	BEFORE starting a brewing cycle, the carafe lid must be closed correctly and the carafe must be placed correctly below the brewing head.
	There was still some coffee in the carafe, when starting the brewing cycle.	Always empty the carafe completely, before starting a new brewing cycle.
	You removed the carafe for a too long time, while a brewing cycle was running.	At the latest after 30 seconds, the carafe must be replaced correctly on the base of the appliance.
The appliance is audibly in operation but it is giving off no coffee or only some droplets.	You just started the brewing cycle.	The appliance must heat the water and moisten the coffee powder, before the coffee starts dripping. This may last up to 30 seconds and depends on the amount of coffee powder and the grind size.
	The water tank is (almost) empty.	The filling level in the water tank must reach at least the filling line 4. Always ensure to fill the water tank sufficiently, before starting a brewing cycle or activating the timer.
	Too fine grind size of the coffee powder.	Only use coffee powder with medium grind size. Please consider this, when buying pre-ground coffee or setting up your coffee grinder. Coffee powder for espresso machines may be too fine for a drip coffee maker.
	Too much coffee powder.	At the maximum, only fill the coffee filter up to half height (approx. 60 g). If you wish to brew very strong coffee, you should reduce the amount of water and, if required, brew your coffee in portions. Alternatively, try a somewhat finer grind size.
	The drip stop is clogged.	Cancel the brewing cycle via the On/Off button. Wait until the brewing chamber cooled down (at least 10 minutes). Clean the filter basket and flush the drip stop thoroughly (see: “Care and Cleaning”). Checking the drip stop: Fill the filter basket with water. The water may not run out until you press the drip stop at the bottom of the filter basket.
	You do not use the correct carafe or the carafe is not placed correctly below the brewing head or the carafe is damaged.	A carafe recommended by the manufacturer must be placed correctly on the base below the brewing head, BEFORE starting the brewing cycle. When using the dedicated carafe, check if the carafe and its lid are in proper working order.
	The carafe lid is not closed correctly or damaged.	The carafe must be closed correctly with the carafe lid. Ensure that the carafe lid is in proper working order without any cracks or distortions.
The coffee volume is too small.	Some water will be restrained by the coffee powder.	This is normal. Use some more water.
	The water tank is (almost) empty.	Do not forget to fill the water tank, before brewing.
	A power failure switched off the appliance.	Check, if the water tank is empty. If there is a sufficient amount of water left in the water tank and the appliance is still hot, you may simply start the brewing cycle again.
Coffee grounds are in the carafe.	You use the reusable filter.	In general, the reusable filter cannot restrain extremely fine particles completely. This is normal. However, check if the mesh of the filter is clogged (see: “Care and Cleaning”). Do not shake the carafe, before pouring and pour slowly to keep the grounds within the carafe. If you feel disturbed, use paper filters size 4.
	Too much coffee powder in the filter.	With too much coffee powder in the filter, the filter may overflow and coffee powder will be flushed into the coffee. At the maximum, fill the filter up to half its height.
	The grind size is too fine.	Very fine coffee powder may clog the filter. In this case, the filter may overflow and coffee ground is flushed into the coffee. Use a coarser grind size.
	The grind of your coffee powder is too uneven. There are too much extremely fine particles.	Some types of coffee grinders produce a very uneven grind with a lot of very fine particles. Use a high-quality coffee grinder.
	The filter is clogged.	Reusable filter: Clean the reusable filter after each use. Check over the fine mesh of the filter for clogged pores and damage (see: ‘Care and Cleaning’). Paper filter: Ensure to use filter bags dedicated for coffee making. Other types of filters are not suited. Spread the filter bag thoroughly in the filter basket.
	The filter is perforated.	Always handle the filters with care. Reusable filter: Check over the fine mesh of the filter for damage. If required, replace the filter. Paper filter: Use another filter.
	The drip stop is clogged causing overflow of the filter basket.	Clean the filter basket after each usage, rinsing the drip stop thoroughly. Check if the drip stop is in proper working order (see: ‘Care and Cleaning’).
The appliance stops operation unexpectedly. Perhaps, there is still water in the water tank.	Excessive scale deposits in the water system.	Unplug the appliance. Always ensure to descale the appliance in time (see: ‘Care and Cleaning’).
	A power failure. For your safety, in this case, the appliance switches off automatically.	When the brewing cycle has been interrupted only for a short time and there is still water in the water tank, there is no significant loss in taste, when you start the brewing cycle again immediately via the On/Off button. When the coffee powder cooled down already, you should set up a new brewing cycle with fresh coffee powder.
	A severe problem occurred.	Immediately unplug the appliance. Please contact Gastroback Customer Care Center, voice: 04165/2225-0 or e-mail: info@gastroback.de.
Using the Timer: The brewing cycle has not been started at the programmed point in time.	The timer mode is not activated.	The timer is activated only, when the white dot above the Prog button is illuminated continuously (see: ‘Operation / Using the Timer’).
	The internal clock is not set correctly.	Before programming the timer, you should set up the internal clock of the appliance. Please keep in mind, that the clock starts at the default time (12:00), whenever the power has been interrupted. The appliance is using the 24 hours time system.
	The water tank was emp- ty, when the appliance attempted to start the brewing cycle.	If there is no water in the water tank, the brewing cycle is cancelled almost immediately and the appliance switches back to standby. Always ensure that you prepared the appliance completely and correctly for operation, before activating the timer.
The brewing time increases.	You filled in somewhat more water as usual.	The appliance always uses the complete filling of the water tank for brewing. Therefore, the brewing time depends on the amount of water in the water tank. Expect approx. 45 seconds for each additional cup of water.
	The appliance needs descaling urgently.	Descale the water system in shorter intervals (see: ‘Care and Cleaning’).
	The valves and pipes of the water system are partly clogged via any foreign matter.	Try to remove the parts via the descaling procedure. If the problem persists, contact the Gastroback Customer Care Center. In old houses, sometimes small pieces of scale and rust are flushed out of the water pipes. When filling the water tank, ensure that there is no foreign material in the water. In general, do not wipe the interior of the water tank with any clothes. Otherwise, small bits of fluff may be flushed into the water system.

NOTES FOR DISPOSAL

Dispose of the appliance and packaging must be effected in accordance with the corresponding local regulations and requirements for electrical appliances and packaging. Please contact your local disposal company.
Do not dispose of electrical appliances as unsorted municipal waste. Use separate collection facilities. Contact your local government for information regarding the collection systems available. If electrical appliances are disposed of in landfills, dumps, or refuse incineration, hazardous substances can leak into the groundwater or can be emitted into air, thus getting into the food chain, and damaging your health and well-being. When replacing old appliances with new once, the retailer is legally obligated to take back your old appliance for disposal at least for free of charge.
