Installation of Alarm
This model meets the latest residential smoke alarm standards, which includes enhanced resistance to nuisance alarms from cooking. Industry experts recommend that both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to help ensure optimal detection of the various types of fires that can occur within the home. Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with fast flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible fire particles (associated
†10-year limited warranty on alarm. Not a battery performance claim. *Different models offer different interconnect options and requirements. Check the User Guide for more info.
**Self-testing is not a substitute for a manual push test of the alarm. Perform a button test once per week to verify proper alarm operation.
with slow smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms. Industry experts recommend specific locations for smoke alarms, such as every level and sleeping area of the dwelling. The alarm can be installed on the surface of any wall or ceiling following the UL/NFPA/Manufacturer’s recommended placement guidelines, on any standard single gang electrical box, up to a 4”octagon junction box. See User Guide for more location information and additional instructions.
The alarm should be installed to comply with all local codes having jurisdiction in your area, Article 760 of the National Electric Code, and NFPA 72. Make certain all alarms are wired to a single, continuous (non-switched) power line, which is not protected by a ground fault interrupter. A maximum of 1000 ft. of wire can be used in the interconnect system. Use standard UL listed household wire (18 gauge or larger as required by local codes).
A maximum of 24 Kidde devices can be interconnected in a multiple station arrangement. The interconnect system must not exceed the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) limit of 18 initiating devices, of which 12 can be smoke alarms. With 18 initiating devices (smoke, heat, CO, etc), interconnected, it is still possible to interconnect 6 strobe lights and or relay modules.
Architectural & Engineering Specifications
The alarm shall include a test button that will electronically simulate the presence of smoke and cause the unit to go into alarm. This sequence tests the unit’s electronics to ensure proper operation. The unit shall incorporate three LED colors. A green LED will be steady on when AC power is connected, or flash every 60 seconds when in the battery only mode. An amber LED will indicate fault conditions. A red LED will flash in sync with the smoke alarm pattern, and will also indicate alarm memory.
The unit shall include the Hush™ feature that silences a smoke alarm for approximately 8-10 minutes if a nuisance alarm condition occurs. The red LED on the alarm will flash every 2 seconds while in Hush and will automatically reset itself.
At the date of manufacture, the unit shall at a minimum meet the requirements of UL 217, NFPA 72, NFPA 101 (One and two family dwellings), Federal Housing Authority (FHA), and Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
NOTE: This is not a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm, but will receive and transmit a CO alarm signal from an interconnected CO or combination smoke/CO alarm. The carbon monoxide (CO) alarm pattern is four quick beeps repeating every 5 seconds. It is impossible to determine the source of a co alarm using sight or smell. Always consider a CO alarm event as dangerous.
