Braun IRT6525 ThermoScan 7+ Ear Thermometer Instruction Manual
Product description
The Braun ThermoScan® Ear thermometer is intended for home use for intermittent measurement of body temperature in individuals from newborn to adult. It is not intended for clinical use in a professional environment. The Age Precision feature is not intended for pre-term babies or small-for-gestational age babies. This thermometer is not intended to interpret hypothermic temperatures. Children under 12 should not take their temperatures unattended.
Warnings and Precautions:
- Consult a physician if symptoms like unexplained irritability, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, changes in appetite or activity, seizure, muscle pain, shivering, stiff neck, pain when urinating occur, regardless of fever presence.
- Consult a physician if the thermometer shows an elevated temperature (yellow or red background lights).
- Operating ambient temperature range: 10–40 °C (50–104 °F). Avoid temperature extremes and excessive humidity (>95% RH).
- Use only genuine Braun ThermoScan disposable Hygiene caps (LF 40).
- Always use a new, clean Hygiene cap for accurate measurements.
- If used without a Hygiene cap, clean the lens as per the "Care and cleaning" section.
- Keep Hygiene caps out of reach of children.
- This product is for household use only and is a screening tool, not a diagnostic device.
- Consult a doctor for any unusual signs or symptoms, even without fever.
- Special caution is advised for neonates and infants under 3 months, patients over 60, those with diabetes or weakened immune systems, bedridden patients, and transplant patients.
- Fever may be blunted or absent in elderly patients.
- This thermometer contains small parts that can be swallowed; keep out of children's reach.
Age Precision® color-coded display
Clinical research shows that the definition of fever changes with age. Braun's Age Precision feature helps interpret temperature readings by using a color-coded display (green for normal, yellow for fever, red for high fever) based on the selected age group.
How to use your Braun ThermoScan®
- Remove the thermometer from the protective case.
- Press the Power button. The display will show all segments during an internal self-check, then the last temperature taken for 5 seconds.
- The Hygiene cap indicator will blink. Attach a new, clean Hygiene cap by pushing the probe straight into the cap and pulling out. The thermometer will not work without a Hygiene cap.
- Select the age group using the Age Precision button. Press the button to cycle through age groups (0-3 months, 3-36 months, 36+ months). An age must be selected to take a measurement.
- Fit the probe snugly into the ear canal, pointing towards the opposite temple. Push and release the Start button.
- The ExacTemp® light will pulse during measurement and remain solid for 3 seconds to confirm a successful reading. A long beep signals completion if the probe is correctly inserted. Short beeps and an error message indicate incorrect positioning.
- A confirmation beep indicates an accurate measurement. The displayed temperature is equivalent to oral temperature.
- For the next measurement, press the Eject button to remove the used Hygiene cap and attach a new one.
Note: The thermometer turns off automatically after 60 seconds of inactivity or when the Power button is pressed.
Temperature-taking hints
- Replace the disposable Hygiene cap with every use for accuracy and hygiene. Earwax and dirt on the cap can obstruct the sensor.
- External factors like poor probe replacement, used or dirty Hygiene caps can affect measurements. Correct probe placement is essential.
- Temperature can differ between the left and right ear. Compare measurements from the same ear.
- In high-risk populations (e.g., infants), use the higher of the two ear readings.
- Wait 20 minutes before taking a temperature after extreme changes in room temperature, or if the user has a hearing aid or has been lying on a pillow. Use the untreated ear if ear drops have been administered.
Night mode
Press the night mode button to enter night mode. Pressing it again turns night mode off. In night mode, audible beeps are muted, and a Night mode icon is displayed. The flashlight turns on and flashes twice upon measurement completion. Night mode remains active until the button is pressed again or the device is turned off.
How to illuminate the display
The thermometer has a night light that illuminates the display in dim environments. The light turns on when any button is pressed and stays on for up to 15 seconds after the thermometer becomes inactive.
Last reading recall
The previous measurement is displayed during startup. Subsequently, it is shown in the upper right corner of the display with an 'M'. The memory updates with the new reading after the first button press following measurement completion.
How to set a default age group
You can set a default Age Precision age group for the device to power on with. To do this:
- With the device off, hold both the Power and Age Precision buttons for 4 seconds until the backlight turns yellow. Release the buttons.
- All Age Icons will flash. Press the Age Precision button to cycle through the age groups (0-3 months, 3-36 months, 36+ months). A full beep sounds with each press.
- After 3 seconds of no button press, the selected icon remains, and a full beep sounds. The device turns off. The default is now set and will remain until batteries are removed and reinserted.
How to change the temperature between °C and °F
Your Braun ThermoScan is shipped with Celsius (°C) activated. To switch to Fahrenheit (°F) or back:
- Ensure the thermometer is turned off.
- Press and hold the Power button. After approximately 3 seconds, the display will show the sequence: °C / SET / °F / SET.
- Release the Power button when the desired temperature scale is shown. A short beep confirms the setting, and the thermometer turns off automatically.
Care and cleaning
The probe tip is delicate and must be clean and intact for accurate readings. If used without a Hygiene cap:
- Gently wipe the probe tip with a cotton swab or soft cloth moistened with alcohol.
- After the alcohol dries completely, attach a new Hygiene cap.
- If the probe tip is damaged, contact Consumer Relations.
- Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the thermometer display and exterior. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
- Never submerge the thermometer in water or any other liquid.
- Store the thermometer and Hygiene caps in a dry, dust-free location away from direct sunlight.
- Additional Hygiene caps (LF 40) are available at most stores carrying Braun ThermoScan.
Replacing the batteries
- Insert new batteries when the battery symbol appears.
- Open the battery compartment, remove old batteries, and insert new ones with correct polarity.
- Snap the battery door shut.
