Introduction
This guide provides instructions for setting up your Brother printer. Please read the Product Safety Guide first. The latest manuals are available at the Brother Solutions Center: support.brother.com/manuals. Video FAQs are available at support.brother.com/videos.
[Note]: Component availability may vary by country. Interface cables are not included. We recommend using a USB 2.0 cable (Type A/B) that is no more than 2 metres long. Network cable should be a straight-through Category 5 (or greater) twisted-pair cable. The illustrations in this guide show the MFC-L2710DW. The Reference Guide is available on the provided Brother Installation Disc in countries where it is not included in the box.
Step 1: Unpack and Install Drum Unit and Toner Cartridge
Unpack the machine and check the components. Key components include:
- Drum Unit and Inbox Toner Cartridge
- Telephone Line Cord (for MFC models)
- Telephone Line Cord Adapter (Australia only, for MFC models)
- AC Power Cord (for certain models)
- Brother Installation Disc
- Quick Setup Guide
- Reference Guide (for certain models)
- Product Safety Guide
Instructions:
- Remove the orange part.
- Push firmly to install the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.
Step 2: Load Paper
Load paper in the paper tray. Adjust the paper guides. Do not exceed the maximum paper mark.
Step 3: Connect Power and Turn On
Connect the AC power cord to the back of the machine and the front power button. Turn the machine on.
Step 4: Select Country/Language (Initial Setup)
After turning the machine on, you may be prompted to select your country or language (depending on your machine). If required, follow the on-screen instructions.
Step 5: Select Your Language (if needed)
For DCP models:
- Press the [Menu] button.
- Press [Up Arrow] or [Down Arrow] to display [Initial Setup], and then press [OK].
- Press [Up Arrow] or [Down Arrow] to display [Local Language], and then press [OK].
For MFC models: Press [Menu], then [0], then [0].
Press [Up Arrow] or [Down Arrow] to select your language, then press [OK]. Press [Stop/Exit] to finish.
Step 6: Select Device to Connect
Choose whether to connect a computer or a mobile device.
- Computer: Go to Step 7 and follow the instructions.
- Mobile Device: Go to Step 8 and follow the instructions.
[Note]: It is recommended to configure wireless settings from your computer.
Step 7: Connect Your Computer
To install the necessary software and drivers, insert the installation disc into your CD/DVD drive or download the Full Driver & Software Package from the Brother Solutions Center:
- For Windows: support.brother.com/windows
- For Mac: support.brother.com/mac
Follow the on-screen instructions and prompts. For Windows, if the Brother screen does not appear automatically, go to Computer (This PC). Double-click the CD/DVD-ROM icon, and then double-click start.exe. For Mac, for full driver functionality, it is recommended to choose the CUPS driver when adding a printer.
Can't Connect? Check the following:
- Wireless network: Restart your wireless access point/router (if possible).
- Wired network: Disconnect the cable.
- USB connection: Restart your machine and computer, and then go to Step 7.

Brother regularly updates firmware to add features and apply bug fixes. To check for the latest firmware, visit support.brother.com/up5.
Step 8: Alternative Wireless Setup
You can set up a wireless connection directly between your device and the machine, even if you do not have a wireless access point/router. For additional wireless network support, go to support.brother.com/wireless-support.
Procedure:
- Find your SSID (Network Name) and Network Key (Password) on your wireless access point/router and write them in the table provided below.
- To select each menu option, press [Up Arrow] or [Down Arrow], and then press [OK] to confirm.
- Select [Network] > [WLAN] > [Setup Wizard], and then press [OK].
- Select the SSID (Network Name) for your access point/router and enter the Network Key (Password).
- When the wireless setup is successful, the LCD displays [Connected].
If setup is not successful, restart your Brother machine and your wireless access point/router, and repeat Step 8.
For Computer: Go to Step 7 to install software.
For Mobile Device: Go to Step 9 to install apps.
Step 9: Print or Scan Using Your Mobile Device
Your mobile device must be connected to the same wireless network as your Brother machine.
- [AirPrint]: [AirPrint] is available for Apple device users. You do not need to download any software to use [AirPrint]. For more information, see the Online User's Guide.
- [Mopria]: Download and install the [Mopria]® Print Service app from Google Play™™ using your Android™™ device.
- Brother iPrint&Scan: Download and install our free application Brother iPrint&Scan from a mobile application store, such as the App Store, Google Play™™ or Microsoft® Store using your mobile device.
Optional apps can also be used for printing and scanning. For instructions, see the Online User's Guide.
