SYMBOL MEANING

SAFETY ALERT SYMBOL: Indicates DANGER, WARNING, OR CAUTION. May be used in conjunction with other symbols or pictographs.

WARNING: The operation of any machines can result in foreign objects being thrown into your eyes, which can result in severe eye damage. Before beginning machine operation, always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields and a full face shield when needed. We recommend a Wide Vision Safety Mask for use over eyeglasses or standard safety glasses with side shields.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

This page depicts and describes safety symbols that may appear on this product. Read, understand, and follow all instructions on the machine before attempting to assemble and operate it.

WARNING: To ensure safety and reliability, all repairs should be performed by a qualified service technician.

GENERAL BATTERY-OPERATED MACHINE SAFETY WARNINGS

WARNING: READ ALL SAFETY WARNINGS, INSTRUCTIONS, ILLUSTRATIONS AND SPECIFICATIONS PROVIDED WITH THIS MACHINE. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.
SAVE ALL WARNINGS AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.
The term “machine” in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) machine or battery-operated (cordless) machine.

WORK AREA SAFETY

Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.

Do not operate machines in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, petrol or dust. Machines create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
Keep children and bystanders away while operating a machine. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY

Machine plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) machines. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.

Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
Do not operate the machine in rain or wet conditions. This may increase the risk of electric shock.

Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the machine. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
When operating a machine outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of
a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.

If operating a machine in a damp location is unavoidable, use a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protected supply. Use of a GFCI reduces the risk of electric shock.

PERSONAL SAFETY

Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a machine. Do not use a machine while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating machines may result in serious personal injury.
Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.

Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the machine. Carrying machines with your finger on the switch or energizing machines that have the switch on invites accidents.
Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the machine on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the machine may result in personal injury.
Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the machine in unexpected situations.
Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of machines allow you to become complacent and ignore machine safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.

MACHINE USE AND CARE

Do not force the machine. Use the correct machine for your application. The correct machine will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
Do not use the machine if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any machine that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the machine before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing machines. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the machine accidentally.
Store idle machines out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the machine or these instructions to operate the machine. Machines are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
Maintain machines and accessories. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the machine’s operation. If damaged, have the machine repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained machines.
Keep cutting machines sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting machines with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
Use the machine, accessories and machine bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the machine for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the machine in unexpected situations.

BATTERY MACHINE USE AND CARE

Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of battery pack may create a risk of fire when used with another battery pack.

Use machines only with specifically designated battery packs. Use of any other battery packs may create a risk of injury and fire.
When battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects, like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws or other small metal objects, that can make a connection from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery terminals together may cause burns or a fire.
Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the battery; avoid contact. If contact accidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquid contacts eyes, additionally seek medical help. Liquid ejected from the battery may cause irritation or burns.

Do not use a battery pack or machine that is damaged or modified. Damaged or modified batteries may exhibit unpredictable behavior resulting in fire, explosion or risk of injury.
Do not expose a battery pack or machine to
fire or excessive temperature. Exposure to fire or temperature above 130 °C may cause explosion.
Follow all charging instructions and do not charge the battery pack or machine outside the temperature range specified in the instructions. Charging improperly or at temperatures outside the specified range may damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.

SERVICE

Have your machine serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the machine is maintained.
Never service damaged battery packs. Service of battery packs should only be performed by the manufacturer or authorized service providers.

DETHATCHER SAFETY WARNINGS

Do not use the machine in bad weather conditions, especially when there is a risk of lightning. This decreases the risk of being struck by lightning.
Thoroughly inspect the area for wildlife where the machine is to be used. Wildlife may be injured by the machine during operation.

Thoroughly inspect the area where the machine is to be used and remove all stones, sticks, wires, bones, and other foreign objects. Thrown objects can cause personal injury.
Before using the machine, always visually inspect to see that the tines and the tines assembly are not worn or damaged. Worn or damaged parts increase the risk of injury.
Keep guards in place. Guards must be in working order and be properly mounted. A guard that is loose, damaged, or is not functioning correctly may result in personal injury.

Keep all cooling air inlets clear of debris. Blocked air inlets and debris may result in overheating or risk of fire.
While operating the machine, always wear non-slip and protective footwear. Do not operate the machine when barefoot or wearing open sandals. This reduces the chance of injury to the feet from contact with the moving tines.
While operating the machine, always wear long trousers. Exposed skin increases the likelihood of injury from thrown objects.

Do not operate the machine in wet grass. Walk, never run. This reduces the risk of slipping and falling which may result in personal injury.
Do not operate the machine on excessively steep slopes. This reduces the risk of loss of control, slipping and falling which may result in personal injury.
When working on slopes, always be sure of your footing, always work across the face of slopes, never up or down and exercise extreme caution when changing direction. This reduces the risk of loss of control, slipping and falling which may result in personal injury.

Use extreme caution when reversing or pulling the machine towards you. Always be aware of your surroundings. This reduces the risk of tripping during operation.
Hold the machine by insulated gripping surfaces only, because the tines may contact hidden wiring. Tines contacting a “live” wire may make exposed metal parts of the machine “live” and could give the operator an electric shock.
Do not touch tines and other hazardous moving parts while they are still in motion. This reduces the risk of injury from moving parts.

When clearing jammed material or cleaning the machine, make sure all power switches are off and the battery pack is disconnected. Unexpected operation of the machine may result in serious personal injury.

ASSEMBLY

CONNECTING THE ATTACHMENT SHAFT TO THE DETHATCHER ASSEMBLY (Fig. B)

Lay the dethatcher assembly upside down on a stable flat surface.

Remove the end cap from the front end of the attachment shaft.
With the hole on the attachment shaft facing up, insert the attachment shaft into the lower cover of the attachment as far as it will go. Align the screw hole in the lower cover with the hole on the attachment shaft.
Using the provided 4 mm hex key, secure the lower cover to the attachment shaft with the M5 bolt.

Using the hex key, tighten the two pre-installed bolts to the lower cover securely.
WARNING: Be certain that the three bolts are fully tightened before operating the equipment; check
it periodically for tightness during use to avoid serious personal injury.
CONNECTING THE DETHATCHER ATTACHMENT TO THE POWER HEAD
This dethatcher attachment is designed for use with EGO Power Head PH1400E/PH1420E/PHX1600.
See “INSTALLING AN ATTACHMENT TO THE POWER HEAD” section in the power head PH1400E/PH1420E/PHX1600 operator’s manual.

OPERATION

WARNING: Do not allow familiarity with this product to make you careless. Remember that a careless fraction of a second is sufficient to inflict serious injury.
WARNING: Always wear eye protection. Failure to do so could result in objects being thrown into your eyes and other possible serious injuries.

WARNING: To prevent serious personal injury, remove the battery pack from the product before servicing, cleaning, changing attachments, or removing material from the product.
WARNING: Do not use any attachments or accessories not recommended by the manufacturer of this product. The use of attachments or accessories not recommended can result in serious personal injury.

APPLICATIONS
Remove old, dried cuttings, moss, grass or root residue from lawns.

STARTING/STOPPING THE DETHATCHER

Before Using the Dethatcher

WARNING: To avoid serious personal injury, wear goggles or safety glasses at all times when operating this product. Wear a face mask or dust mask in dusty locations. Wear proper clothing and footwear during operation to reduce the risk of injury that may be caused by flying debris.

Inspect the product thoroughly for damage before using. Do not use the product if it is damaged or shows wear.
Make sure that the lawn is clear of stones, sticks, wire, or other objects that could damage the product.
Mow the lawn before working and fertilize afterwards.

Operating Tips
In order for a healthy lawn to develop in the spring, it is necessary for greater amounts of air to penetrate the area around the roots of the grass. We recommend dethatching the lawn at least twice every year, during spring or autumn depending on the state of your lawn.

For your safety, do not operate on slopes greater than 15 degrees. Work across the face of slopes, not up and down. Exercise extreme caution when changing direction on slopes.
Do not work with this product on a wet lawn because wet grass tends to stick to the deck and the tines, it could also cause you to slip and fall.

Hold the product with both hands. Keep the handles dry to ensure safe support.
Slowly push the product forward. Move the product at appropriate speed. Do not move it too fast to prevent the tines from getting stuck and causing motor overload.
Switch the product off immediately if other people enters the working area. Always let the product come to a complete stop before putting it down.

Do not overwork. Take regular breaks to ensure you can concentrate on the work and have full control over the machine.
Work in slight overlapping rows. The most effective pattern is straight lines along one of the sides (Fig. C). This will keep the rows even and ensures that all the lawn is dethatched without missing any spots.
Pay special attention when changing direction.

Always be sure of your footing. A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury. If you feel you are losing your balance, switch off the motor immediately.
Do not work near drop-offs, ditches, or embankments, you could lose your footing or balance.

To Start/Stop the Dethatcher Attachment
See “STARTING/STOPPING THE POWER HEAD” section in the operator’s manual for PH1400E/PH1420E /PHX1600.

WARNING: Stop the machine if it has to be tilted for transportation when crossing surfaces other than grass and when transporting the machine to and from the area in which it is to be used.
WARNING: Do not tilt the machine when switching on the motor, except if the machine has to be tilted for starting. In this case, do not tilt it more than is absolutely necessary and lift only the part which is away from the operator.

Checking for blockage of the tines

To prevent blockage, clean the underside of the machine before and after each use to remove any accumulated debris.

When blockage happens, stop the machine and remove the battery pack, then remove any build-up of grass and leaves on or around the tines and deck. Wipe the machine clean with a damp cloth.

ADJUSTING DEPTH (Fig. D)

WARNING: Keep your feet away from the deck when adjusting the depth.
The dethatching depth can be set to 3 depth positions: 1 & 2: operating position 3: transportation position

Adjust the depth according to the needs of your lawn.

Switch off the machine and wait for the machine to come to a complete stop.

Remove the battery pack.
Pull the depth adjustment lever out of the detent and set it to the desired position.

MAINTENANCE

WARNING: Before inspecting, cleaning or servicing the machine, stop the motor, wait for all moving parts to stop, and remove the battery pack. Failure to follow these instructions can result in serious personal injury or property damage.

WARNING: Always wear eye protection with side shields. Failure to do so could result in objects being thrown into your eyes resulting in possible serious injury.
WARNING: When servicing, use only identical replacement parts. Use of any other parts can create a hazard or cause product damage. To ensure safety and reliability, all repairs, other than the items listed in these maintenance instructions, should be performed by a qualified service technician.
WARNING: After striking a foreign object, stop the machine, and remove the battery pack to make sure that all moving parts have come to a complete stop. Then inspect the machine for damage and make repairs before restarting and operating the machine.

WARNING: If the machine starts to vibrate abnormally, stop the machine, and remove the battery pack to make sure that all moving parts have come to a complete stop. Then immediately inspect for damage, replace or repair any damaged parts, and check for and tighten any loose parts.
WARNING: Be careful during adjustment of the product to prevent entrapment of the fingers between moving parts and fixed parts of the product.

CLEANING

WARNING: When cleaning the dethatcher attachment, DO NOT immerse it in water or other liquids.
Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts. Most plastics are susceptible to damage from various types of commercial solvents and may be damaged by their use. Use clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, oil, grease, etc.

LUBRICATION

All of the bearings in this product are lubricated with a sufficient amount of high-grade lubricant for the life of the unit under normal operating conditions. Therefore, no further bearing lubrication is required.

REPLACING THE CYLINDER

WARNING: Before performing any maintenance, always remove the battery pack from the machine and wait until the tine cylinder comes to a complete stop. Wear protective gloves when handling the tines.

To remove the cylinder

Remove the battery pack from the power head.
Lay the attachment upside down on a flat stable surface.
Use the provided 5 mm hex key to loosen and remove the two locking bolts on the bearing seat of the dethatcher cylinder (Fig. E1).

Push the dethatcher cylinder leftwards until the spline shaft on the right end is pulled out from the spline hub of the machine (Fig. E2).
Remove the dethatcher cylinder from the machine (Fig. E3).

To install the new cylinder

Place the bearing seat of the new cylinder on the machine base and push the cylinder leftwards as far as it will go (Fig. F1).
Align and insert the spline shaft on the right side of the cylinder into the spline hub of the machine (Fig. F2).
Align the two holes on the bearing seat with the holes on the base, secure the bearing seat to the base with the locking bolts (Fig. F3).

REPLACING THE RAKE TINES
Under normal use, rake tines can wear or break over time. When adjusting the tine depth no longer gives you the correct amount of dethatching, or if a tine breaks, follow the steps below to replace the tines.

To remove the tine

Remove the battery pack from the power head.
Lay the attachment upside down on a flat stable surface.
Push the two pins of the rake tine to the slot 1 on the cylinder, and pull off the rake tine from the dethatcher cylinder as shown in Fig. G.

To install the rake tine (Fig. H)

Insert the pin of the rake tine into the slot 1 on the cylinder (step 1).
Insert the seat of the rake tine into the slot 2 on the cylinder (step 2).
Guide the two pins of the tine into the slot 1, push forward to the position at the slot 3 and the two pins will automatically rebound in place (step 3 & 4).

TRANSPORTING AND STORING

Remove the battery pack from the power head.
Always allow the product to cool down before storing it.
Clean the product thoroughly before storing it.
Store the product in a dry, well-ventilated area, locked up or up high, out of the reach of children. Do not store the product on or adjacent to fertilizers, gasoline, or other chemicals.

PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT

Do not dispose of electrical equipment, used battery and charger into household waste! Take this product to an authorized recycler and make it available for separate collection. Electric machines must be returned to an environmentally compatible recycling facility.

TROUBLESHOOTING
