Introduction
Congratulations! You are now the owner of a Q Series smart keyboard, the 4Q. The 4Q has been designed to boost productivity by displaying information (e.g. weather, stock quotes, project progress, CPU usage, etc.) in color on the keyboard’s keys. This user manual will walk you through the process of setting up your keyboard, such as installation, Q Software applets, and keyboard shortcuts/tricks.

Installation & Configuration Overview
The 4Q is designed to display information coming from the Internet (e.g. stock quotes changes) via the Das Keyboard Q Desktop software. The Q Desktop software can be downloaded and installed easily, you will find a basic overview below
- Download the Das Keyboard Q Software (you will find links below) and install it on your computer.
- Start the Q software
- Plug the keyboard into your computer’s USB
- Once the software is running, it should show that the keyboard is connected.

Customization Basics
Use Q Software to customize your smart keyboard’s colors and animations. In order to change an RGB profile, simply click the RGB Profiles tab where you will see multiple preset RGB profiles. Switch between prebuilt and saved profiles by clicking the desired RGB profile.
To create a custom RGB profile from scratch, click the + icon in the RGB Profiles tab labeled “NEW PROFILE” in the screenshot to the right. To edit the colors of a prebuilt, or a custom profile, click the Q software’s image, CTRL+click them to select multiple keys, or drag your mouse across them (selecting clusters of keys).
After selecting a key or keys, change the color or effect with the dropdown at the bottom of the screen. By default “Set Color” will be selected nder passive effects which also include blink, color cycle, and breathe. Passive effects will display whether or not you are typing on the keyboard, where the active effects will only display when typing. Additional active effects nclude ripple, laser, and inward ripple. The ripple effect is similar to what a drop of water produces when it hits a body of water, and the inward ripple is the reverse of that effect. The laser effect shows RGB lighting on both the left and right of the row the letter pressed is on. A passive effect and active effect can be set simultaneously.
If a prebuilt RGB profile is customized or deleted and you would like to recreate them, you can restore all prebuilt profiles by clicking the three vertical lines next to the clone button to restore the starter profiles, indicated by “GET STARTER PROFILES” in the screenshot above.
Linking an Application to an RGB Profile
Das Keyboard Q Series keyboards have the ability to link a specific RGB profile to an application, so when you open an application the RGB profile will automatically change. The most common examples of this are when someone opens Microsoft Word, the RGB profile is linked to the “Best Typing Position” RGB profile, or if Photoshop is opened, the Photoshop RGB profile is linked to automatically change the configuration of the RGB lighting.
To link an application to a profile, click on the RGB profile that you would like to link in the left column under “RGB Profiles”.
Then click the two-chain link icon at the bottom of the Q Software screen and allow the permissions on your computer.
Once you open the application within the Q software, the profile will show a chain link next to it in the “RGB Profiles” column to indicate that it is now linked to an application. To test select a different RGB profile than the one that is linked, and open the application.
Applet Basics
Q Software contains the Applets center, which shows available and installed Q Applets that trigger different notifications and lighting effects depending on third-party software integrations. Q Applets make up the smart functionalities of your keyboard. To access, add and remove Q Applets, click the Applets tab. Q Applets that are available for installation will show under “Discover”, installed and enabled applets show under “Enabled” and “Disabled” applets will show there.
Each applet has its own setup process and functionality. Clicking and installing an applet will walk you through the install process. Once installed, most applets allow for multiple instances to be added to multiple keys.
When no applets are selected, the dashboard will display an image of your keyboard with the keys that have applets installed and configured. To see all of the notifications from the installed and configured applets, press the Q button on your keyboard or click the “dashboard” text at the top of the Q Software. To silence all notifications click the text bubble in the top right corner of the Q software and enable quiet mode.
How to turn on and off NKRO
What is NKRO?
NKRO refers to N-key rollover. A keyboard with full n-key rollover can register as many keys as you can press at once without “dropping” any characters. This means that no matter how fast you type, your Das Keyboard will keep up.
Turning NKRO On and Off
By default, NKRO is turned off on the 4Q for compatibility reasons and 6-key rollover is enabled.
To toggle NKRO on and off, press CTRL + Q BUTTON. The indicator lights (number lock, caps lock, and scroll lock) will flash once to show you that NKRO has been turned on. They will flash twice to show you that it has been turned off.
Overview of 4Q Special Keys or Functions
On the top right of your 4Q is a section that includes several buttons that are different from your normal key switches. Below you will find an introduction and description of each of them.
- SLEEP BUTTON: This small square button on the top right of your keyboard has a small symbol of a moon. Pressing this button will put your computer to sleep.
- BRIGHTNESS BUTTON: This button is a rectangular button right below your SLEEP BUTTON. It shows a half sun icon and with each press of this button, your keyboard’s brightness will increase through 10 different levels of brightness, with the 11th press turning the LEDs off.
- MEDIA PAUSE/PLAY BUTTON: The button to the right of the BRIGHTNESS BUTTON will play, or pause any music or video window that is open.
- MEDIA FORWARD BUTTON: The skip forward button is to the right of the MEDIA PAUSE/PLAY BUTTON. Pressing it will advance any music or video window that is open. It can not be used for video scrubbing.
- VOLUME WHEEL: The wheel at the top right of your keyboard is a volume knob. Turning it clockwise will raise your computer’s volume while turning it counter-clockwise will turn your computer’s volume down.
- Q BUTTON: The volume wheel on the top right of the keyboard is also a button. Pressing the button when there are no applets with notifications will open your Q
Software if it is currently minimized. If there is a Q Applet notification, then pressing the button will bring up your Q Software dashboard and the applet with the notification.
There are two keys on the 4Q that some users may not recognize, the WINDOWS KEY and the MENU KEY.
- WINDOWS KEY: Some users may not recognize this key because the standard Windows logo has been replaced with the Das Keyboard icon. Pressing the Windows key by itself opens the Start menu that also displays the search box. Holding down the Windows key and pressing another key may trigger a keyboard shortcut, such as Windows key+E will open Windows Explorer. - MENU KEY: This key has a menu icon on it and is located under the right SHIFT KEY and directly to the right of the WINDOWS KEY on the right. It is identifiable by its graphic showing a small square containing three horizontal lines stacked on one another. When pressed, this key will bring up a context menu (the same menu that shows when right-clicking). Depending on what task you are performing, the context menu will show in different places.
