1. User Information
1.1 This User Manual
This manual is designed to help you use and maintain your Quickie Q500 H wheelchair safely. It is part of a four-booklet series: the general user manual (this booklet), the seating system manual, the controller manual, and the battery charger manual. References to other manuals are indicated as follows: Seating system, Controller, Battery charger.
DO NOT use your wheelchair until this entire manual (all booklets) has been read and understood!

2. Safety
2.1 Symbols and Labels Used on the Product
Signs, symbols, and instructions on the wheelchair are integral safety features and must remain legible. Replace any illegible or damaged labels immediately by contacting your Sunrise Medical authorized dealer.

2.2 Safety: Temperature
- WARNING! Avoid contact with wheelchair motors during and after use, as they can become hot and cause burns. Allow motors at least 30 minutes to cool.
- Do not expose the wheelchair to direct sunlight for extended periods, as parts like the seat and armrests can become hot, potentially causing burns or skin reactions.
2.3 Safety: Moving Parts
- DANGER! Avoid contact with moving and rotating parts, which can cause serious injury or damage. These include: wheels, powered tilt, powered seat lift, powered recline, swing-away bracket, and powered elevating leg rests.
2.4 Safety: Electromagnetic Radiation
- CAUTION! While tested for electromagnetic compatibility, external sources like mobile phones or medical equipment may influence the wheelchair. Similarly, the wheelchair may interfere with systems like shop doors or alarm systems. Notify your dealer if abnormal operation occurs.
- DANGER! Halt and turn off the wheelchair when operating powerful transmitting devices (two-way radios, CB radios). For cordless/mobile phones, if abnormal operation occurs, halt and turn off the chair.
2.5 Safety: Choking Hazard
- DANGER! The mobility aid contains small parts that may pose a choking hazard to young children.
2.6 Safety: Using a Wheelchair Lift
- DANGER! Ensure users and caregivers understand lift manufacturer instructions. Never exceed the lift's safe working load. Turn off all power on the lift. Position the user securely and ensure the chair is in drive mode (wheels locked).
2.7 Safety: Accessory Tray
- WARNING! Using a vent tray affects stability. Secure batteries and ventilator. Be aware of the increased size to prevent collisions. Keep the area around the vent tray clear when reclining. The tray is not for oxygen bottles. It must be attached and maintained by a Sunrise Medical authorized dealer.
- WARNING! For swing-away trays, do not exceed the 5.5 lbs (2.5 kg) load limit. Avoid overloading, which can cause breakage or instability. Do not place heat sources on the tray. Ensure extremities are clear when positioning the tray.
2.8 Safety: Lifting the Wheelchair
- WARNING! Do not lift the seating system by removable parts to avoid damage or injury.
2.9 Safety: Stability
- WARNING! Removing batteries can cause instability and tipping. Only remove batteries when the chair is on the ground and never on an elevated surface.
3. Intended Use of the Wheelchair
3.1 Area of Application: The User
Power wheelchairs are for personal use by individuals unable to walk or with limited mobility, for indoor and outdoor use. Operation requires cognitive, physical, and visual skills. The wheelchair cannot transport more than one person. The maximum user weight limit is indicated on the serial number label.
- Standard Base Maximum User Weight: 300 lbs (136 kg)
- Base with HD Seat Maximum User Weight: 350 lbs (158 kg)
WARNING! Exceeding weight capacities can lead to injury and equipment damage. Exceeding the weight limit voids the warranty.
The user must read and understand this manual before operating the wheelchair.
Indications:
The Q500 H is suitable for users with paralysis, loss of extremity, extremity defects, joint contractures/injuries, and certain illnesses affecting mobility, as well as elderly individuals with upper body strength.
Contraindications:
Do not use if you have perception disorders, imbalance, or seating disabilities. WARNING! Do not drive under the influence of medication affecting driving ability. Adequate vision is required. Only one person at a time. Do not allow children to ride unsupervised.
CAUTION! The user is responsible for complying with local safety regulations.
Attendants:
If an attendant control module is fitted, an assistant can operate the wheelchair. With dual controls, the user or an assistant can operate it.
- Attendant Use: Heed all warnings. Do not stand or sit on the system. Work with the user and healthcare provider for safe methods. Check push handle grips. Ensure comfortable access to attendant controls. Set speed appropriately. Turn off power when leaving the user unattended.
- WARNING! DO NOT use a wheelchair involved in a motor vehicle accident. Structural damage may occur. Discontinue use immediately and contact your Sunrise Medical authorized dealer for inspection. Replacement is recommended if damage is suspected or after a collision. Warranty is void for chairs involved in collisions.
3.2 Area of Application: The User Environment
This wheelchair is designed for indoor and outdoor use on paved roads, pavements, footpaths, and bicycle paths. Adapt speed to the environment.
- WARNING! Drive carefully on slippery surfaces. Turn on lights in low visibility. Reduce speed in pedestrian areas. Do not drive off high obstacles. Do not attach unapproved weights.
- CAUTION! Avoid contact with seawater and sand. Do not use if temperatures are below -10°C (15°F) or above +50°C (120°F). Do not open doors using leg rests. Do not push/tow objects. Avoid puddles. Ensure battery cover is secure. Never use in showers, tubs, pools, or saunas. Dry the chair if it gets wet.
4. Setting Up the Wheelchair
Sunrise Medical wheelchairs are adjustable for optimal user support. Settings are typically done by a Sunrise Medical authorized dealer, while some adjustments can be made by the user without tools.
4.1 Seating System
Extensive settings allow for optimum body support, including seat depth/width, backrest angle, armrest height, lower leg length, and footplate angle. Refer to the Seating System manual for details.
4.2 Seat Height
Seat height can be adjusted within safe limits. Lowering the seat height improves stability.
- DANGER! Increasing seat height negatively affects dynamic stability.
4.3 Center of Gravity
DANGER! Adjusting the center of gravity is critical and should only be performed by a Sunrise Medical authorized dealer.
4.4 Controller Height and Depth
Refer to the Seating System manual for adjustments.
4.5 Control System Program
DANGER! Control system programming requires specialized training and software, and must be performed by a Sunrise Medical authorized dealer. Incorrect settings can be dangerous.
4.6 Check After Setup and/or Adjustment
After any setup or adjustment, ensure all moving parts operate freely without interference before use. Check for collisions between components.
4.7 Rear Dynamic Stabilizer Set Up
Ensure the Rear Dynamic Stabilizer is set properly by turning the adjustment screw so the marker is visible through the viewing pane while the user is seated.
4.8 Suspension Spring Collar Adjustment
The pre-load setting on front shocks can be adjusted. Adjusting the distance shorter may reduce climbing ability; adjusting it larger may reduce stability. Turn the Rebound Knob fully clockwise, then counter-clockwise one click.
- DANGER! Incorrect adjustment could result in serious injury.
5. Using the Wheelchair
- DANGER! Adjustments to the controller settings may be necessary. Check and adjust settings every 6-12 months. Consult your dealer if you have difficulty controlling the joystick, maintaining an upright posture, or avoiding objects.
5.1 Checking Wheelchair Before Use
Perform these daily checks:
- CAUTION! Check wheels and tires for tread and inflation.
- Checking Batteries: Charge for 24 hours before first use. Ensure batteries are sufficiently charged (green lights on indicator). WARNING! Use only approved chargers for 24V Lead Acid and Gel batteries.
- Checking Lights and Indicators: Ensure they function correctly and lenses are clean, especially before night use.
- Checking Joystick: With the control system off, ensure the joystick is not bent or damaged and returns to center.
- Checking Freewheel Switch: Ensure it is set to 'drive'.
- Checking Seating: Ensure cushions are in place, backrest is fitted and adjusted, leg rests and armrests are positioned and attached securely, and seat interface knobs are tight.
- Checking Clothing: Ensure clothing does not hamper the wheelchair and is clear of moving parts.
- Checking Weather Conditions: Battery capacity is reduced in cold temperatures.
5.2 Making a Transfer
Sunrise Medical recommends consulting a healthcare provider for safe transfer techniques. DANGER! Transferring alone can be dangerous due to balance requirements. WARNING! Do not use armrests for support during transfers. Never use the footplate as a platform.
5.3 Driving the Wheelchair
WARNING! Users are responsible for complying with local safety regulations. Refer to the Controller manual for joystick operation.
- Switch on the controller.
- Set the maximum speed limit.
- Move the joystick in the desired direction.
- Increase speed by moving the joystick further.
- Rear View Mirror: WARNING! Be aware the mirror protrudes and could cause injury. Ensure it is clean and unbroken.
- Road Use: Be considerate of other traffic. DANGER! Be visible and ensure it is safe to cross roads. Avoid objects that could puncture tires or lodge in the mechanism. Be cautious of drains and grids.
- Adverse Conditions: Reduced grip and traction on wet grass, mud, ice, or snow. DANGER! Take extra precautions on slopes; instability or skidding may occur. Be aware of loose or long clothing around moving parts.
5.4 Curves
- DANGER! Avoid full-speed turns. Reduce speed before sharp turns, especially on slopes, to prevent tipping.
- WARNING! Use indicators when changing direction if equipped.
5.5 Braking and Emergency Stop
- Release the joystick for controlled stopping.
- Pull back the joystick for abrupt braking.
- Switching off the control system provides an emergency stop. WARNING! Use this only in emergencies due to abrupt stopping. Do not use wheel locks as brakes.
5.6 Driving on a Slope
The wheelchair is designed for slopes up to 7.5° (5-6 mph) and 10° (8 mph).
- DANGER! Adjustments like elevating, tilting, or leg rests can affect stability and cause tipping. Stopping distances are longer on slopes.
- DANGER! Lean forward when driving uphill with the seat upright. Sit upright or recline the seat when driving downhill. Return seat and back to home positions before slopes. If unsure, find an alternative route.
- Ascents: Keep moving uphill. Steer with slight joystick adjustments. Start slowly if stopped. Lean forward if necessary.
- Descents: Proceed slowly (below 3 mph / 5 kph). Center the joystick to slow down or stop. Restart slowly.
5.7 When Seated and Driving in Lift Mode
- WARNING! If your chair has a Power Seat Lift, read related warnings. Use lift mode only on flat, level, hardscape surfaces. Never use on uneven terrain like gravel, grass, or hills.
5.8 Obstacles and Curbs
- DANGER! Never descend a curb backwards. Do not use on escalators or multiple steps. The wheelchair is designed for single steps/curbs (max 60mm Group 3, 75mm Group 4).
- Curb Climbing: Approach curbs at a 90° angle. Drive slowly. Stop as casters touch the curb. Apply power to lift the front, then drive wheels onto the curb. Keep the joystick straight.
- Descending a Curb: Move forward slowly until front wheels are at the curb edge (90°). Drive slowly off the curb without stopping. Lean back if possible. Powered seating options should be in home position. Leg rests may need adjustment for clearance. Use the lap belt for security.
5.9 Pushing the Wheelchair
To push the wheelchair, disengage motors using the freewheel switch. DANGER! The freewheel switch should only be operated by an attendant. Never leave a user unattended in 'push' mode. Never set the switch to 'push' on a slope, as the automatic parking brake is deactivated. Set to 'drive' immediately after pushing. Release motor brakes only when power is off and on level ground. Propel only by push handles. Check handle grips.
5.10 (Powered) Seating Options
The wheelchair may have powered options for seating adjustment, operated via the controller. These include powered tilt, seat lift, backrest recline, and elevating leg rests.
- DANGER! Use powered seating options only on flat surfaces. Stay clear of moving actuators. Use caution when driving in reclined, elevated, or tilted positions. Do not operate while the chair is moving. Do not operate lift/tilt near children. Be aware of actuator movement direction. Lift/tilt modules present a trap hazard; keep clear of all extremities. Do not drive on ramps/slopes in elevated positions; return to standard seated position first. The system may reduce speed to a creep mode when certain limits are reached.
6. Batteries, Charging, and Range
6.1 Batteries
The Q500 H uses two 12V deep cycle, maintenance-free gel batteries connected in series (24V total). These batteries provide power over long periods. CAUTION! Use only deep cycle mobility batteries, not car batteries. Dispose of worn-out batteries at approved points. Check battery terminals regularly for corrosion and apply petroleum jelly or silicone grease if needed.
- DANGER! Do not expose batteries to heat or flame. Avoid short-circuiting batteries with metal tools. Remove metal jewelry when working on batteries.
- DANGER! Do not tamper with batteries. Avoid contact with battery acid. If acid contacts skin or clothing, wash immediately with soap and water. If it contacts eyes, flush with cold water for 10 minutes and seek medical attention. Neutralize spills with baking soda and water. Keep batteries upright.
Safety cut-outs, including 100A links and 15A fuses, protect the electrical circuits.
6.2 Charging Batteries
Follow the battery charger's user manual. Maintain a battery care plan:
- Use only approved Sunrise Medical chargers.
- Charge batteries nightly.
- Do not interrupt the charging cycle.
- Keep the mobility device connected to the charger if not in use (main socket switched on).
- For storage over one week, charge fully and disconnect the main battery lead.
- Failure to recharge damages batteries.
- Do not top up charge during the day; wait for an overnight charge.
- Maintenance-free batteries take longer to charge.
- Check battery terminals for corrosion.
Connecting the Charger: Switch off the controller. Connect the charger plug to the joystick module charging socket. Connect the charger to the main supply.
- DANGER! Ensure the cord is not a tripping hazard. Do not rest batteries on the charger. Place the charger on a hard, flat surface. Do not operate a damaged charger. Never place the charger directly above the battery. Never charge a frozen battery. Do not sit with the charger on your lap. The charger casing may get hot. Do not disassemble the charger. Unplug before cleaning. Never smoke near batteries or chargers. Do not charge outdoors. Use a smoke detector in the charging area.
- WARNING! Battery chargers are only for 24V Lead Acid or Gel batteries.
- DANGER! Replace fuses only with the specified type and size.
6.3 The Range of Your Vehicle
Range figures are calculated per ISO 7176-4:2008 under controlled conditions. Actual range may vary due to user weight, battery condition, terrain, temperature, tire pressure, driving style, and use of power options.
6.4 Replacing Batteries
The wheelchair uses two 12V non-spillable gel batteries. Replacement and servicing must be done by a Sunrise Medical authorized dealer. DANGER! Do not attempt battery replacement without supervision.
6.5 Disconnecting Batteries for Air Transport
Follow the steps to disconnect batteries: Release seat frame handle screws and lever, flip seat frame back, secure with seat stay, lift off battery box lid, disconnect Anderson connectors. Reverse procedure to reconnect. DANGER! Failure to secure the seat stay may cause injury. WARNING! Removing batteries changes the center of gravity; secure the chair with an obstacle. Check the effect of weight removal. Remove batteries only when the chair is on the ground.
7. Transportation
7.1 Transport of the Wheelchair in a Car
DANGER! Ensure the vehicle is suitable for wheelchair transport. Use an appropriate ramp or lifting device. Secure the wheelchair in a forward-facing direction. The wheelchair is approved for forward-facing transport and frontal impact.
CAUTION! Ensure sufficient space for attaching restraints. Smaller wheelchairs generally offer easier vehicle access.
Securing the Wheelchair: Use a 4-point strap restraint system (ISO 10542 or SAE J2249). DANGER! Secure only to the wheelchair's frame tie-down points (indicated by the tie-down symbol). Fit front straps first, then rear. Do not secure to accessories. No modifications to anchorage points without consulting the manufacturer. Secure properly if transported without an occupant.
7.2 The Wheelchair as a Passenger Seat
DANGER! Wheelchair safety in a vehicle is less than vehicle seating. Transfer to vehicle seating when possible. If transporting in the wheelchair: Ensure tie-down restraints are secured by trained personnel. Stow auxiliary equipment safely. Do not use elevated leg rests or reclined backrests during transport. Return seat elevators to the lowest position. Apply manual brakes. Use only WTORS meeting SAE J2249. Attach WTORS to securement points. Use occupant restraints. Ensure hip guides are locked. Do not rely on postural supports for restraint. Do not alter wheelchair frame parts. Chairs involved in collisions should be replaced.
- Occupant Restraint Instruction: DANGER! Use a 3-point occupant restraint system. Both pelvic and upper torso restraints are required. Restraints should be mounted to the vehicle pillar, not held by wheelchair components. Use a suitable headrest. Postural supports are not sufficient for restraint unless labeled per ISO 7176-19 or SAE J2249.
- Positioning the Occupant Restraint: DANGER! Pelvic belt angle should be 30°-75° to the horizontal. Upper torso restraint should fit over the shoulder and across the chest. Adjust restraints snugly. Do not twist webbing. Ensure buckle placement avoids contact with wheelchair components.
7.3 Special Transit Requirements
- Train Travel: Contact the train operator for specific requirements regarding wheelchair areas, platform access, boarding assistance, and slope/obstacle limitations.
- Transporting as Luggage: Detach easily removable parts like the seat and accessory trays. Secure or label them separately. Batteries comply with IATA regulations. Contact the carrier for specific instructions. Refer to sections on pushing the wheelchair, controller locking, battery disconnection, drive disconnection, transportation, and storage.
7.4 General Transport Warnings
- WARNING! Do not modify anchorage points or frame parts without consulting Sunrise Medical. Inspect the wheelchair after any vehicle collision; replacement is recommended if damage is questionable. Warranty is void for chairs involved in collisions.
8. Maintenance and Cleaning
Proper maintenance ensures wheelchair lifespan. Contact your Sunrise Medical authorized dealer for settings, maintenance, or repairs, providing model, year, and serial number.
CAUTION! Service the wheelchair annually, or semi-annually with intensive use, by a Sunrise Medical authorized dealer.
8.1 Maintenance
- WARNING! Re-tighten loose fasteners per installation instructions (see Section 8.6 for torque values). Replace chest straps if damaged. Discontinue use and contact dealer if broken or loose components are found. Check Velcro® straps for adhesion and clean off debris.
- WARNING! If unsure about performance, contact your dealer. Ensure correct function after maintenance. Replace fasteners like-for-like. Reapply thread locking solution when replacing self-locking nuts.
- Daily Checks: Perform as described in Section 5.1.
- Weekly Checks:
- Parking Brake: Test on a level floor. Push joystick forward until brakes engage; release. Repeat for all directions.
- Connectors and Cables: Ensure secure mating and check for damage.
- Controller: Check joystick gaiter for damage. Ensure control system components are securely mounted.
- Controls: Check hand control lights. Operate all electric options. Test reduced speed mode with elevated seat. Test drive profiles.
- General Weekly Checks: Check tire inflation. Check frame for obstructions. Ensure seat frame knobs are tight.
- Quarterly Checks:
- Check straps for fraying or wear.
- Check for missing or loose fasteners.
- Check for broken components or unusual wear.
- WARNING! A complete inspection, safety check, and service by a Sunrise Medical authorized dealer is recommended at least annually. Replace fasteners like-for-like. Reapply thread locking solution. Check Velcro® straps. Do not reuse fasteners.
8.2 Wheels and Tires Maintenance
Maintain correct tire pressure as indicated on the tire sidewall. Underinflated tires increase effort, drain batteries, and cause wear. Replace tires when tread is significantly diminished.

- DANGER! Do not inflate beyond maximum pressure. Use the supplied pump. Never use a gas station pump. Deflate tires completely before repair.
8.3 Lighting Maintenance
- DANGER! Light maintenance is critical. Contact your dealer for any defects. Lights are LED, low energy, and maintenance-free. Replace damaged light assemblies entirely; individual LEDs cannot be replaced.
- CAUTION! Use only Sunrise Medical spare parts. Lighting circuits are electronically protected and reset automatically.
8.4 Cleaning and Disinfection
Wipe the wheelchair weekly with a slightly damp cloth. Blow or dust away debris from motors. CAUTION! Dry all parts if they become wet. DANGER! Clean thoroughly between users to prevent cross-infection. Use a suitable alcohol-based disinfectant for medical products.
8.5 Medium to Long Term Storage
For storage over one week:
- Fully charge for at least 24 hours.
- Disconnect the charger.
- Disconnect the batteries.
- WARNING! Never store the wheelchair outdoors, in direct sunlight, near heat sources, in damp or cold environments, or with batteries connected (even if the controller is off). This minimizes battery discharge and extends battery life. When returning to use, reconnect batteries and charge for at least 24 hours.

Fastener torque settings: M8 = 19.9-24.2 Nm, M5 = 4.9-6.0 Nm, M6 = 8.1-9.9 Nm, M4 = 0.7-0.9 Nm.
9. Trouble Shooting
If the wheelchair is not working correctly:
- Check battery charge.
- Turn the wheelchair off and on again.
- Check battery plug connections.
- Ensure the freewheel switch is in the DRIVE position.
- Check the speed regulator position.
- Ensure the controller is not locked.
If the problem persists, consult the controller's troubleshooting section.

Sunrise Limited Warranty
This guarantee does not affect your legal rights.
Sunrise Medical warrants the following:
- FIVE (5) YEARS: Frame against defects in materials and workmanship.
- ONE (1) YEAR: Sunrise-made parts and components (motors, gearboxes, electronics) against defects.
- BATTERIES: One (1) year warranty provided by original battery manufacturers.
4. Limitations
- Not warranted: Tires, tubes, upholstery, pads, grips.
- Damage from neglect, accident, misuse, improper installation/repair.
- Unauthorized modifications.
- Exceeding weight limits.
- Warranty is VOID if the serial number tag is removed or altered.
- Applies in USA and Canada only.
- Not transferable; applies only to the first consumer purchase.
- Our Liability: Repair or replacement of covered parts.
- Dealer Responsibility: Obtain prior approval from Sunrise Medical for returns/repairs. Contact Customer Service for RMA number and return information. Provide model, serial number, and service description.
7. Notice to Consumer
- You must pay labor costs for repair/installation, even if parts are under warranty.
- This warranty replaces other warranties (express or implied), including warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.
- This warranty grants specific legal rights, which may vary by state/province.
- This guarantee is subject to the law of the country where the product was purchased.
Additional Warranty Information for Australia Only
- Sunrise Medical Pty Ltd goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law.
- Entitled to replacement/refund for major failure and compensation for other foreseeable loss/damage.
- Entitled to repair/replacement if goods fail quality standards and failure is not major.
- Warranty benefits are in addition to other rights and remedies under law.
