2. Setup and Caterpillar Arrival

2.1 Ordering Your Caterpillars

Your kit includes a voucher for live caterpillars. It is crucial to redeem this voucher when daytime temperatures in your area are consistently between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (10-32 degrees Celsius) to ensure safe delivery and optimal conditions for the caterpillars. Caterpillars are shipped to mainland USA only.

2.2 Initial Placement of Caterpillars

Upon arrival, the caterpillars will be in a clear cup with their food. Place the cup in a safe location away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Observe them daily as they grow and consume their food. The Chrys-A-Lid log will arrive with your caterpillars and is designed to hold the cup once the caterpillars form their chrysalides.

3. Operating the Butterfly Garden

3.1 Caterpillar Growth and Chrysalis Formation

Caterpillars will grow significantly over approximately 7-10 days. They will then climb to the top of the cup and hang upside down in a 'J' shape before forming their chrysalides. This stage typically lasts another 7-14 days.

3.2 Transferring Chrysalides to the Habitat

Once all caterpillars have formed their chrysalides, carefully transfer the lid of the cup (with the attached chrysalides) to the Chrys-A-Lid log. Place the log inside the mesh habitat. Ensure the habitat is placed in a safe, stable location.

3.3 Butterfly Emergence and Feeding

Butterflies will emerge from their chrysalides. This is a delicate process, and they will need time for their wings to harden. Once emerged, they can be fed with sugar water using the provided pipette and feeder, or with fresh fruit slices.

3.4 Releasing Butterflies

After a few days of observation and feeding, the butterflies are ready to be released into their natural habitat. Choose a warm, sunny day for release. Gently open the habitat and allow the butterflies to fly out. This kit promotes an earth-friendly, pro-pollinator approach.

4. Údržba

4.1 Cleaning the Habitat

Po uvolněníasing your butterflies, the mesh habitat can be cleaned for future use. Gently wipe down the mesh with a damp cloth and mild soap if necessary. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry completely before folding and storing.

4.2 Storing the Kit

The pop-up habitat folds flat for easy storage. Keep all components, including the pipette, feeder, and journal, in a dry, safe place until your next butterfly raising adventure.

5. Řešení problémů

5.1 Caterpillars Not Moving

It is normal for caterpillars to appear still, especially when they are preparing to molt or form their chrysalides. Avoid disturbing them during these critical stages. Ensure the temperature is within the recommended range (50-90°F).

5.2 Chrysalides Falling

Occasionally, a chrysalis may detach from the lid. If this happens, gently place the detached chrysalis on a paper towel at the bottom of the habitat. The butterfly should still be able to emerge successfully.

5.3 Butterflies Not Flying

Newly emerged butterflies need time for their wings to dry and harden. This can take several hours. Ensure the habitat is in a calm, warm environment. If a butterfly appears unable to fly after 24 hours, it may have emerged with a defect. Continue to offer it sugar water or fresh fruit.
