01 Overview
01a Keys to Comia Success
Welcome to the Comia Smartpillow – the smarter way to breastfeed. Here are some tips and suggestions for Comia Success:
b.1 Don’t use the display portion of the Comia pillow until after your milk comes in, which happens on average 2-5 days after baby is born. Until then, simply clasp the pillow around your waist and use the pillow surface as a support for your infant during feeding times. Until your milk comes in, baby will be drinking small amounts of colostrum and the timing and intake may be varied and immeasurable.
b.2 It is preferable to perform Comia weighted feeds for ‘full feeds’. Some babies like to cluster feed or comfort feed, and that is ok! It just may not give you a sense of how much baby is taking in during a full feeding session. Our recommendation is to do the weighted feed after baby has not eaten for some time (1.5+ hours) and is showing hunger cues. This can often be a feeding after a nap.
b.2 You don’t need to measure milk intake every feeding, unless a doctor or expert recommends you do so. Unless otherwise advised, our recommendation is to check in on a full feeding once a week to get a sense of baby’s average breastmilk intake during a full feeding session.

01 Overview
01c How it works
Comia was designed to support Mom and baby through every step in the breastfeeding journey.
d.1 A left and right side timer are embedded in the pillow on the display, so you can keep track of how long baby is nursing for per side.
d.2 Your information is saved from feeding session to feeding session. When you turn on the pillow, it will show you on the screen your last feeding session- what time the feeding started and which side you started on for the last feeding session.
d.2 After each session the data is sent to the Comia app, so that the full history of feeding is available, as well as data visualizations and aids so you can see baby’s progress over time. You can use the app to record manual feedings not done using the Comia Pillow and it will integrate manual feedings with pillow feedings on the app.
01
d.4 Weighing sensors are embedded under the top portion of the pillow, so that for a weighted feed, you can weigh your baby before the session and after the session to get an accurate measurement of how much milk your baby took in.
This is the reason for the gap between the top half and the bottom half of the pillow. In order to get accurate weight measurements, nothing that is on top of the pillow (the baby, the baby’s clothing, a receiving blanket etc.) may droop over the gap and touch the bottom half of the pillow. Also, in order to get an accurate measurement, you cannot hold or touch your baby or any part of the pillow when capturing baby’s weight. For a wiggly or rolling over baby, please use the provided safety strap, and see 03c for more information on how to use it.
02 Getting Started
02a Set up the Comia App a.1 Locate and download the Comia App, which is available for IOS devices in the App Store. Note: You don’t have to pair your Comia Smart Pillow with the Comia App in order to use the pillow. However, in order to have the full Comia experience, the app is highly recommended.
a.2 Sign up for a Comia account. If you don’t have a Comia account, open the Comia app and tap `Register’ to create one for free. The app will walk you through the process.
02b Wash and zip on Comia cover It is recommended to prewash the Comia upper and lower covers before using it the first time. There are two zippers on the pillow, and the upper and lower covers easily zip on and off for easy cleaning.
02c Charge Comia to full battery capacity Charge the Comia with a USB-C cord. To access the charging port, un-velcro the top cover under the pillow handle and unzip about an inch. You will see the port in that area. When Comia is running low on battery, the battery indicator on the pillow will flash to indicate a charge is needed.
03 Using Comia
03a For a standard feeding (non-weighted)
a.1 Strap the pillow around your waist, and place your baby on the surface. Turn on the
pillow by pressing the button.
a.2
Once you get your baby settled and latched, press the L or R button depending on the
side your baby is latched on. If you want to pause the timer, simply push the button again to pause.
03
a.3
You can switch back and forth as much as you like. The timer will keep the cumulative time per
each side.
a.4
When you are fully finished the feeding session, pause the side you are finished on. The timers will display the final amount fed per side. The pillow will remember this information and share it with you next time you turn it on for another
feeding session.
03 Using Comia
a.5
Open the app and sync the feeding to view it in your log. But don’t worry: the pillow will remember multiple feedings so no need to sync after every session.
a.6
Long press on the button to turn the pillow off and end the feeding
03b
For a weighted feeding (to assess breastmilk intake)
03
b.1
Place the pillow on a flat surface- a table, your bed or the couch (as long as you’re not sitting on them), or on a carpeted floor are
all options
b.2
Turn on the pillow by pressing any button, as you would a regular feeding.
03 Using Comia
b.3 Make sure nothing is on the pillow, then press the button which will shift the
pillow into weighing mode.
b.4
When the display shows a steady zero, place your baby on the pillow- they can wear
clothing, but no blankets or lovies. Hands up! Make sure there is nothing else touching or on
the pillow besides for your baby.
03
Important: When taking your baby’s weight, make sure your baby and everything they are wearing is on top of the pillow surface and nothing is drooping over the
sides- as that can throw off the reading.
b.5
When your baby’s weight is captured, press “yes” to save it as the initial weight, or “no” if
you would like to take the weight another time.
b.6
Proceed now to feed as regular, using the L and at R buttons to time and log each side feedings (see a.2 and a.3 for more details). When you are fully done feeding your baby,
pause the side you are finishing on.
Tip: Double pressing the button will zero out the scale inside the pillow. This means that whatever is on the pillow when you double press the button will be ‘tared out’ and the scale will go to zero and will “start over” only account for weight added afterward. Therefore always lift off your baby before double pressing the button and then replace your baby on the pillow afterward to take their weight.
03 Using Comia
b.7
b.8
Place the pillow back on the flat surface you used for the first weight before you started
feeding.
Place your baby on the pillow and then press the button which will shift the pillow into weighing mode (again). Hands up! Make sure there is nothing else touching or
on the pillow besides for your baby.
To re-tare the scale at any point, lift your baby fully off the pillow and double press the button and then put your baby back down. If the scale has been moved around a lot since you took the initial weight before the feeding or if it has been a long feeding (30+ minutes), this may increase the accuracy of the `baby
has eaten’ value.
b.10
b.11
03
You will see the numbers under `Baby has Eaten’ on the right side stabilize to show you
how much your baby has eaten during the feeding session.
Press “yes” to save the final weight, or press “no” to take the weight again. The pillow will now show you how much your baby ate, and it will be logged on the app once the feeding
is synced.
b.9
Your baby must be wearing the same items of clothing and the same diaper as what they were wearing during the first weight taking. Even if the baby pees or poops during the feeding session, the scale will account for that weight inside baby or in the diaper and by changing it, the final weight measurement of milk
intake will be off.

05 Troubleshooting
If the bluetooth is not connecting to the app
Turn the pillow off and then on. Close down the app on the phone and re open it. Try again.
If that does not work, reset the device. There is a reset button under the charging hole on the pillow. Simply unzip the top cover and pull down the inner lining to access the reset button and push it for a quick bluetooth reset.
If the scale is not stabilizing (the zeros are turning and not stabilizing)
Check for obstructions. Make sure there are no objects on the scale or in between the top and bottom cushions before taring.
Make sure the pillow is on a flat and even surface. A table, cushioned floor, coffee table, or flat firm bed with a tight bed sheet (without loose bedding underneath or surrounding the Comia pillow) are all good options.
Turn the pillow off and then on again.
If the weight you are getting “doesn’t make sense”
Retare the scale at any time by double pushing the button. Make sure nothing is on the pillow when you push the button. Pick up your baby before you push it and replace them when the zeros have finished stabilizing.
05
If you are having issues charging the device
Reset the device. There is a reset button under the charging hole on the pillow. Simply unzip the top cover and pull down the inner lining to access the reset button and push it for a quick reset.
If the battery is draining too quickly
Limit light usage. The Comia product without light usage can run 16 hours of active usage. The light has 3 hours of active usage, so if you are running out of battery quickly, consider limiting the light feature.
