CANVAS METHOD ML Painting the Clothed Figure

PAINTING THE CLOTHED FIGURE

INSTRUCTOR: HARVEY CHAN

While all materials can be found at Opus Art Supplies, similar products and brands from other stores are welcome. Suggested brand names are ‘italicized’. Additional materials are also welcome.

WHAT WE PROVIDE

  • Easels, side tables, chairs and stools, containers for liquids, masking tape, and saran wrap.

SURFACE

  • Bring 1 surface, any size between 16” x 20” to 18” x 24”.
  • Stretched canvas or gessoed hardboard panel (aka ‘Artboard’ or ‘Ampersand’) are preferred. Canvas board is also welcome.
  • This surface require a total of 3 layers of ‘acrylic white gesso’. With pre-gessoed surfaces, please add 2 more layers, allowing to dry between layers.

PAINT

Oils are recommended, but acrylics are welcome. It is recommended to use ‘artist grade’ vs. ‘student grade’ paint.

  • Titanium White / Yellow Ochre / Cadmium Red Medium / Alizarin Crimson (or Permanent Alizarin) / Burnt Sienna / Raw Umber / Ultramarine Blue / Ivory Bla

MEDIUM

For Oil Painters: Linseed Oil + OMS (Odorless Mineral Spirits)

  • Use Gambling’s ‘Gamsol’ only! Please do not bring other brands or turpentine
  • Bring an extra glass jar + lid to store excess dirty OMS after class

For Acrylic Painters:

  • Bring a small spray water bottle to keep your paint wet
  • Recommended: Acrylic ‘Retarder’ to extend drying time
  • Optional: Use ‘Golden Open Acrylics,’ which stay wet for 24 hours

BRUSHES

Please bring whatever brushes you enjoy working with in a range of shapes and sizes.
We recommend the following long-handled brushes:

  • Synthetic Filbert: sizes 2, 4, 6, and 8 (one or two of each)
  • Synthetic Rounds: sizes 0 or 2, and 4 (one of each)
  • Optional: A few Filbert bristle brushes between size 2 and 8 if painting on canvas

PALETTES

For Oil Painters:

A glass palette is provided, although you are welcome to bring your own

For Acrylic Painters: 

  • It is recommended to use a ‘Masterson Sta-Wet’ palette (16″ x 12”): Click HERE

  • Optional: ‘Canson Disposable Palette Paper’ (16” x 12”): Click HERE

ADDITIONAL ITEMS

  • Graphite pencil (2B or HB is fine), or a charcoal pencil
  • One kneadable eraser
  • Palette Knife: ‘Liquitex’ Small Painting Knife #5
  • Paper Towel: ‘Scott’s Shop Towels’ (blue): Click HERE
  • Painting can be messy, please bring suitable clothing.

OPTIONAL

  • Gloves While Painting: Latex or ‘Gorilla Grip’ gloves (breathable + waterproof)
  • Gloves for Brush Cleaning: Waterproof rubber gloves are recommended.
  • Sketchbook 8.5×11” or smaller for taking notes
  • ‘Mahl’ stick
