Product Usage Instructions
Applying Layers to Pre-Gessoed Surfaces
- Ensure the pre-gessoed surface is clean and dry.
- Add 2 more layers of your preferred medium, allowing each layer to dry completely before applying the next.
- Use recommended ‘italicized’ brand products or similar alternatives for best results.
Using Palettes for Oil Painters
- If you prefer, you can bring your own palette, although a glass palette is provided.
- Keep the palette clean and free of any previous paint residue before each use.
- Experiment with different mixing techniques on the palette to achieve desired color blends.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: Can I use my own materials instead of those recommended?
- A: Yes, you are welcome to use similar products and brands from other stores if they are compatible with the instructions provided.
- Q: How should I clean the glass palette provided?
- A: Clean the glass palette with a suitable solvent or cleaning agent recommended for oil painting palettes. Ensure it is completely dry before using it again.
While all materials can be found at Opus Art Supplies, similar products and brands from other stores are welcome. Suggested brand names are ‘italicized’. Additional materials are also welcome.
WHAT WE PROVIDE
- Easels, side tables, chairs/stools, liquid containers, masking tape, and saran wrap.
SURFACE
- Cara prefers One pad of 9” x 12” YUPO paper (medium body): Click HERE (YUPO does not need to be gessoed)
- OR two 8” x 10” surfaces and four 5” x 7” or 6” x 8” (we’ll divide this into four sections) Gessoed hardboard panel (aka ‘Artboard’ or ‘Ampersand’) is best but the canvas is okay
- Hardboard and canvas require a total of 3 layers of ‘acrylic white gesso’. With pre-gessoed surfaces, add 2 more layers, allowing to dry between layers.
PAINT
Oils are recommended, but acrylics are welcome.
It is recommended to use ‘artist grade’ vs. ‘student grade’ paint.
- Titanium White / Yellow Ochre / Cadmium Yellow (or any bright yellow) / Cadmium Red Light (or any bright red) / Alizarin Crimson (or Permanent Alizarin) / Burnt Umber / Ultramarine Blue / Ivory Black
- Optional: Phthalo Blue, Green Gold
MEDIUM
For Oil Painters: Linseed Oil + OMS (Odourless Mineral Spirits)
- Use Gamblin’s ‘Gamsol’ only! Please do not bring other brands or turpentine
- Bring an extra glass jar + lid to store excess dirty OMS after class
For Acrylic Painters:
- Bring a small spray water bottle to keep your paint wet
- Acrylic ‘Retarder’ to extend drying time
BRUSHES
Please bring whatever brushes you enjoy working with in a range of shapes and sizes.
We recommend the following long-handled brushes:
- Synthetic Flat: sizes 4, 6, and 8 (1 of each) OR Opus Denman Angled Brushes: sized 1/4 inch,1/2 inch and 1 inch
- 2 Bristle Flats: size 6
PALETTES
For Oil Painters:
A glass palette is provided, although you are welcome to bring your own
For Acrylic Painters:
- It is recommended to use a ‘Masterson Sta-Wet’ palette (16″ x 12”): Click HERE

ADDITIONAL ITEMS
- Graphite pencil (2B or HB is fine) and eraser
- Palette Knife: ‘Liquitex’ Small Painting Knife #5
- Paper Towel: ‘Scott’s Shop Towels’ (blue): Click HERE
- Painting can be messy, please bring suitable clothing.
OPTIONAL
- Gloves While Painting: Latex or ‘Gorilla Grip’ gloves (breathable + waterproof)
- Gloves for Brush Cleaning: Waterproof rubber gloves are recommended.
- Sketchbook 8.5” x 11” or smaller for taking notes
- Mahl stick
