Gator Piss Etching Instructions

(All instructions based on an etchant temperature of 65-75 degrees)

(Any cooler and etching will take longer)

Product Information

  • Surface finish: Start with a minimum of 600 grit. Preferred range is 800-1000 for a higher luster in the final finish. For solid cores that need to be darkened, 600 grit is recommended.
  • Degreasing: Use Brake Cleaner to degrease the steel surface before etching.
  • Etchant: Gator Piss is the recommended etchant for the process.
  • Streaks: Watch for streaks when placing steel into the etchant. If streaks appear, immediately pull the steel out and scrub with a plastic bristled brush or repeat the degreasing step. If no streaks are present, leave the steel in the etchant for about 20 minutes.
  • Repeat Process: Repeat the etching process as needed to achievethe desired etched depth and contrast. The etching should be deep enough to catch a fingernail.
  • Proper Etching: If you find areas that are not etching properly, remove the blade and neutralize. Then, buff with a fine rouge on a loose cloth buffing wheel or use 2500 grit paper. Repeat the degreasing and etching steps.
  • Neutralizing: Once you have pulled the steel from its final etch, immediately neutralize the acid in the blade with a neutralizing agent such as Windex or submerse it in a baking soda bath.
  • Rinsing and Oil Spraying: Rinse the steel and spray it with oil, such as WD40, to prevent oxidation.
  • Oxide Setting: Let the oxides set for a minimum of 6 hours in a dry location before touching the steel again.
  • Final Luster: Oil and wipe the steel for the final luster.
