This image displays the front of the wall scanner, featuring the central LCD screen and the yellow 'MODE' button below it. The top section has measurement markings in millimeters.

Figure 5.2: Back View
The back of the device is shown, highlighting the battery compartment cover at the bottom and product information labels in the center, including 'Stud Finder' and 'Battery: 6F22 9V'.

Figure 5.3: Side View
This image illustrates the side profile of the wall scanner, clearly showing the 'SCAN' button located on the left side of the device, which is pressed during scanning operations.
Key Components:
- LCD Display: Shows detection mode, signal strength, battery status, and center/edge indicators.
- MODE Button: Press to switch between Wood, Metal, and AC Wire detection modes.
- SCAN Button: Located on the side, press and hold during scanning.
- Sensor Area: Located on the back of the device, this area must be flat against the wall during scanning.
- Battery Compartment: Located on the back, holds one 9V battery.
- LED Indicators: (Red/Yellow/Green) Provide visual feedback on detection.
- Audible Alert: Beeps to indicate detection.
6. Setup
6.1 Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device (refer to Figure 5.2).
- Slide the cover open.
- Insert one 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
6.2 Initial Calibration
The device features automatic calibration. To ensure accurate readings:
- Place the device flat against the wall surface where you intend to scan. Ensure there are no known studs, metal, or wires directly beneath the device during calibration.
- Press and hold the 'SCAN' button. The device will automatically calibrate. Wait for the calibration process to complete (usually a few seconds) before moving the device.
- The LCD will show a stable reading, indicating it is ready for use.
7. Operating Instructions
7.1 Power On/Off
The device powers on automatically when the 'SCAN' button is pressed and held. It will automatically shut off after 5 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery life.
7.2 Mode Selection
Press the 'MODE' button to cycle through the available detection modes:
- Wood Stud Detection: For locating wood studs at 12mm, 25mm, or 38mm depths.
- Metal Detection: For identifying ferrous and non-ferrous metals (e.g., iron, copper, aluminum) up to >60mm depth.
- Live AC Wire Detection: For detecting live unshielded AC wires (90-250V) up to 51mm depth.
7.3 Scanning Procedure
- Select the desired detection mode using the 'MODE' button.
- Place the device flat against the wall surface.
- Press and hold the 'SCAN' button. Ensure the device is calibrated on a clear section of the wall.
- Slowly slide the device horizontally across the wall surface. Keep it flat and maintain constant contact.
- Observe the LCD display and listen for audible alerts.
- When an object is detected, the signal strength bars on the LCD will increase, and LED indicators will light up (yellow/red). An audible beep will also sound.
- Mark the edges of the detected object. Continue scanning past the object, then scan back from the opposite direction to confirm the edges and locate the center. The center indicator on the LCD will illuminate when the center is found.
7.4 Specific Detection Notes
- Wood Studs: The device will indicate the edges and center of wood studs. For deeper studs, ensure the appropriate depth mode is selected.
- Metal: The device detects both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. It will indicate the presence and approximate location.
- Live AC Wires: Detection is most effective for unshielded, live wires. Always confirm power is off before any work. The detection depth for AC wires can be affected by wall material and moisture.
8. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe the device with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the device in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for extended periods, remove the battery to prevent leakage.
- Battery Replacement: Replace the 9V battery when the low battery indicator appears on the LCD.
9. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Device does not power on. | Battery is dead or incorrectly installed. | Replace the 9V battery or check its polarity. |
| Inaccurate readings or constant beeping. | Improper calibration or presence of moisture. | Recalibrate the device on a clear section of the wall. Ensure the wall surface is dry. |
| Cannot detect AC wires. | Wires are shielded, not live, or too deep. | Ensure the circuit is live. Note that shielded wires may not be detected. |
| Device slides poorly on the wall. | Rough wall surface or debris on sensor. | Clean the sensor area. Ensure the wall surface is smooth enough for scanning. |
