Setup and Assembly

The VELPAX 52-inch Tow Behind Plug Aerator is designed for straightforward assembly. Follow these steps carefully.

1. Unpack Components: Carefully remove all parts from the packaging and lay them out on a clean, flat surface.
2. Assemble Main Frame: Connect the frame sections using the provided hardware. Ensure all bolts are finger-tight at this stage.
3. Attach Aerator Tines: Secure the 40 galvanized steel tines to the aerator axles. Ensure they are oriented correctly for soil penetration.
4. Install Wheels: Mount the two pneumatic transport wheels onto the axle ends.
5. Mount Tow Hitch: Attach the universal tow hitch to the front of the aerator frame. This hitch is designed to connect to most lawn tractors, ZTRs, and ATVs.
6. Install Weight Tray: Secure the weight tray to the top of the main frame. This tray is designed to hold additional weight for increased soil penetration.
7. Attach Transport Handle: Install the cantilever transport handle. This handle allows for easy raising and lowering of the tines.
8. Final Tightening: Once all components are assembled, go back and securely tighten all nuts and bolts. Double-check all connections for stability.

Operating Instructions

Proper operation ensures effective aeration and extends the life of your equipment.

1. Prepare the Lawn: For best results, aerate when the soil is moist but not waterlogged. Avoid aerating extremely dry or wet soil.
2. Attach to Towing Vehicle: Connect the aerator's tow hitch to your lawn tractor, ZTR, or ATV. Ensure a secure connection.
3. Add Weight (Optional): For maximum soil penetration, add up to 125 pounds of additional weight (e.g., concrete blocks) to the weight tray. This helps the tines penetrate compacted soil up to 2 inches deep.

4. Lower Tines: Use the cantilever transport handle to lower the aerator tines into the operating position.

5. Begin Aeration: Drive the towing vehicle at a slow, consistent speed across the lawn. The galvanized steel tines will extract soil plugs, improving aeration and alleviating soil compaction.

6. Transporting the Aerator: When crossing driveways, pavements, or other areas where aeration is not desired, use the cantilever transport handle to raise the tines and engage the pneumatic transport wheels.
7. Post-Aeration: Leave the soil plugs on the lawn to decompose, returning nutrients to the soil.
