Setup & Operation

Follow these steps to prepare your rock tumbler for operation:

  1. Open the Tumbling Barrel: Unscrew the black knob on top of the barrel. Remove the outer metal lid, then the inner rubber lid.
  2. Add Rocks: Place your rough gemstones into the barrel. Ensure the barrel is filled between 1/2 and 3/4 full. If you have fewer rocks, add ceramic media to fill the barrel.
  3. Add Grit & Water: Refer to the tumbling chart below for the correct grit for the current cycle. Add the specified grit and enough water to just cover the rocks.
  4. Seal the Barrel: Place the inner rubber lid back on, ensuring a tight seal. Then place the outer metal lid and screw the black knob back on tightly.
  5. Place Barrel on Tumbler: Position the sealed barrel onto the rollers of the tumbler base. Ensure the cap is on the right side.
  6. Set Time & Speed: Plug in the power adapter. Use the digital control panel to set the desired number of days and speed according to the tumbling chart.
  7. Start Tumbling: Press the On/Off button to begin the tumbling process.

Tumbling Process Overview (4 Cycles)

The rock tumbling process involves four distinct cycles, each using a different grit and duration to achieve optimal results. It is important to clean the rocks and barrel thoroughly between each cycle to prevent cross-contamination of grits.

Cycle #Grit #TimeSpeed
1: Coarse GrindGrit #14-6 days3
2: Medium GrindGrit #26-8 days2
3: Pre-polishGrit #36-8 days1
4: PolishGrit #47-9 days1

Note: The purpose of the first cycle of tumbling is to smooth out sharp points and edges. This cycle will take from 4 to 6 days, depending on the size and hardness of the stones. It is best to check the stones daily during this cycle. With a lower speed for finer results, smoothing out the rocks even more. It is important to inspect stones during this 6 to 8 day process. On the slowest speed for the finest results. This cycle starts to polish the rocks. On the slowest speed for the finest results. This cycle adds a layer of polish. Don't forget, slow speed and long polishing times will generally get you the best results!
