5.2. Grind Adjustment

The Spluga grinder features a Quick Release Grind Adjust system for precise control over your grind size.

  • Coarse Adjustment: To make large adjustments, unlock the grind adjust knobs located at the collar of the grinder. Rotate the collar to the desired setting. Finer settings are typically achieved by rotating clockwise, and coarser settings by rotating counter-clockwise.
  • Precise Adjustment: For minor, precise adjustments, use the smaller knobs on either side of the grinder. These allow for fine-tuning without unlocking the main collar.
  • Testing: Always grind a small amount of coffee after adjusting to check the grind consistency and flow rate for your espresso machine.

5.3. Programmable Dosing & Touchscreen Control

The 3.5-inch touchscreen allows for intuitive control and customization of your grinding experience.

  • Setting Doses: From the main screen, you can set and save timed doses for single, double, and triple shots. Tap on the desired dose button (e.g., "Single," "Double") to adjust the grinding time using the on-screen plus (+) and minus (-) buttons.
  • Saving Settings: Once your desired time is set, the grinder will automatically save this setting for future use.
  • Manual Grinding: To grind manually, select the manual grind option on the touchscreen. The grinder will operate as long as the portafilter is engaged or the manual button is held.
  • Customization: The touchscreen enables customizable button layouts and colors to personalize your interface. Navigate to the settings menu to access these options.

5.4. Dosage Type Selection

The Spluga offers two primary modes for dosage selection:

  • Standard Mode: In this mode, you select your desired dose option (e.g., single, double) on the touchscreen before inserting the portafilter. Once the portafilter is inserted and engages the activation switch, grinding will commence for the pre-selected time.
  • Play Mode: Play mode allows for a more dynamic workflow. Grinding begins after you select the dose directly on the screen, even if the portafilter is already in place. This can be useful for quick adjustments or manual control.

6. Maintenance

6.1. Daily Cleaning

  • Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the grinder with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or immerse the unit in water.
  • Drip Tray/Portafilter Rest: Remove and clean the drip tray/portafilter rest regularly to prevent coffee residue buildup. Wash with warm, soapy water and dry thoroughly.
  • Hopper: Empty the bean hopper and wipe it clean with a dry cloth. Avoid washing the hopper with water unless completely necessary, and ensure it is fully dry before refilling with beans.

6.2. Burr Cleaning (Monthly/As Needed)

Regular burr cleaning is essential for consistent grind quality.

  1. Unplug: Always unplug the grinder from the power outlet before performing any maintenance.
  2. Remove Hopper: Empty the bean hopper and remove it from the grinder.
  3. Access Burrs: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific model to access the burrs. This typically involves rotating the grind adjustment collar past its normal range or removing a top plate.
  4. Clean: Use a stiff brush or a vacuum cleaner with a narrow attachment to remove all coffee grounds and oils from the burrs and grinding chamber. Do not use water.
  5. Reassemble: Carefully reassemble the burrs, ensuring they are correctly aligned. Reattach the bean hopper.
  6. Test: Plug in the grinder and run a small amount of old coffee beans through it to ensure proper function and clear any remaining debris.
