5. Setup and Installation
This section outlines the general steps for installing your Varstrom Ebike Conversion Kit. Professional installation is recommended if you are unfamiliar with bicycle mechanics. Always ensure the bicycle is stable and the power is off before beginning installation.
- Prepare the Wheel: Remove your existing front or rear wheel. If installing a rear hub motor, ensure your cassette is compatible and transfer it to the new motor wheel.
- Install the Motor Wheel: Mount the new motor wheel into the appropriate fork (front) or dropout (rear) of your bicycle. Securely tighten all nuts and bolts.
- Install Brake Levers and Throttle: Attach the new brake levers and thumb throttle to your handlebars. Connect them to the existing brake cables and the controller wiring.
- Install PAS Sensor: Mount the Pedal Assist Sensor (PAS) on your bicycle's bottom bracket area. Ensure it is correctly aligned with the crank arm.
- Mount Controller and Battery: Secure the intelligent controller and the battery (if purchased with the kit) to your bicycle frame. The controller is typically mounted in a bag or a designated area, and the battery can be a downtube or rear rack type.
- Connect Wiring: Carefully connect all cables from the motor, display, brake levers, throttle, PAS sensor, and headlight to the intelligent controller. Refer to the wiring diagram for correct connections. Ensure all connections are secure and waterproof.
- Final Checks: Before riding, check all connections, ensure brakes are functioning correctly, and verify that the motor engages and disengages as expected.

6. Operating Instructions
Once installed, operate your e-bike safely and responsibly. Familiarize yourself with the display and controls before riding.
- Power On/Off: Press and hold the power button on your display to turn the system on or off.
- Pedal Assist System (PAS): The PAS sensor detects your pedaling and provides motor assistance. Use the display buttons to adjust the PAS level (typically 0-5 or 0-9), with higher levels providing more assistance.
- Throttle: The thumb throttle provides on-demand power without pedaling. Use it cautiously, especially when starting.
- Display Functions: Your chosen display will show various metrics such as current speed, trip distance, total distance (ODO), battery level, and PAS level. Refer to your specific display's manual for detailed functions and settings.
- Brakes: The brake levers are equipped with sensors that cut off motor power when applied, ensuring safe stopping.

7. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your e-bike conversion kit.
- Motor: The brushless, gearless hub motor requires virtually zero maintenance. Keep it clean and free from debris.
- Battery: Charge the battery regularly, even when not in use, to maintain its health. Store in a cool, dry place. Avoid fully discharging the battery.
- Wiring and Connections: Periodically inspect all cables and connections for wear, damage, or looseness. Ensure they are securely fastened and protected from moisture.
- Brakes: Regularly check brake pads for wear and ensure proper brake function. Adjust or replace as needed.
- Tires: Maintain correct tire pressure as specified by your tire manufacturer.
- General Bicycle Maintenance: Continue to perform regular maintenance on your bicycle's mechanical components, such as chain lubrication, gear adjustments, and frame inspection.
8. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your e-bike kit, refer to the following common troubleshooting tips:
- No Power to Display/Motor:
- Check battery charge level.
- Ensure all electrical connections are secure, especially the main battery connection.
- Verify the battery is properly seated and locked (if applicable).
- Motor Not Assisting:
- Check if the PAS level is set above 0 on the display.
- Ensure the PAS sensor is correctly installed and aligned.
- Check if brake levers are stuck or if their sensors are engaged, cutting motor power.
- Display Error Codes: Refer to your specific display's manual for a list of error codes and their meanings. Common issues include motor connection errors, controller errors, or sensor malfunctions.
- Unusual Noises from Motor: While the gearless motor is quiet, any unusual grinding or knocking sounds should be investigated. This could indicate a loose component or internal damage.
If problems persist after basic troubleshooting, contact Varstrom customer support or a qualified e-bike technician.
