2. Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions to reduce the risk of injury, electric shock, fire, or property damage.

  • Electrical Safety: Ensure the pump is connected to a properly grounded outlet. Do not operate the pump with damaged cords or plugs. Keep all electrical connections dry.
  • Valve Operation: STOP THE PUMP BEFORE SWITCHING VALVE POSITION. Failure to do so can damage the valve and pump.
  • Filter Media: Always ensure filter media (sand or filter balls) is filled between the MIN and MAX lines marked on the center pipe inside the tank. Overfilling or underfilling can affect performance and damage the unit.
  • Children: Keep children away from the pump and filter system during operation and maintenance.
  • Water and Chemicals: Avoid direct contact with pool chemicals. Always wear appropriate protective gear when handling chemicals or performing maintenance.
  • Placement: Install the pump on a stable, level surface away from the pool edge to prevent accidental submersion.

3. Package Contents

Verify that all components are present before beginning installation:

  • Sand Filter Tank
  • Pump Motor (1/2 HP)
  • 6-Way Multi-Port Valve
  • Pressure Gauge
  • Transparent Viewing Window
  • Hose Adapters (1.25-inch and 1.5-inch)
  • Hose Clamps
  • Adapter Conversion Fittings
  • Base Plate

Note: Filter sand or filter balls, and a backwash hose are not included and must be purchased separately.

4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps for proper installation of your Vidapool Sand Filter Pump:

  1. Secure the Pump on the Base: Place the pump motor securely onto the provided base plate. Ensure it is stable and level.
  2. Add Filter Media: Carefully add the required filter media (up to 30 lbs of pool filter sand or 1 lb of pool filter balls) into the sand filter tank. Ensure the media level is between the MIN and MAX lines indicated on the center pipe.
  3. Install the 6-Way Valve: Attach the 6-way multi-port valve to the top of the filter tank. Ensure a tight seal. Set the valve to the 'Filter' position for initial operation.
  4. Connect Hoses: Use the provided 1.25-inch or 1.5-inch hose adapters and clamps to connect the pump to your above ground pool's inlet and outlet ports. Ensure all connections are secure and leak-free. It is recommended to use plumbing sealing compound on threaded connections for an optimal seal.
  5. Start the Pump: Once all connections are secure and the filter media is in place, plug in the pump and turn it on.
Four steps for installing the Vidapool sand filter pump: securing the pump, adding filter media, installing the valve, and starting the pump.

5. Operating Instructions

The 6-way multi-port valve allows for various operational modes. Always stop the pump before changing the valve position.

  • Filter: This is the standard operating mode for daily filtration. Water is pumped through the filter media, and clean water is returned to the pool.
  • Waste: Used for vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste, bypassing the filter. Also used for lowering the pool water level.
  • Closed: Shuts off flow to the filter and pump. Use this setting when performing maintenance on the pump or filter, or when the pool is not in use for an extended period.
  • Backwash: Reverses the water flow through the filter media to clean it. This flushes trapped debris out through the waste port. Perform backwash when the pressure gauge indicates a higher-than-normal reading (typically 8-10 PSI above starting pressure) or when the transparent viewing window shows dirty water.
  • Recirculate: Circulates water through the pump and valve, bypassing the filter. Useful for distributing chemicals without filtering.
  • Rinse: Used immediately after backwashing to flush out any remaining dirty water from the filter media before returning to 'Filter' mode. Run for 30-60 seconds.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your sand filter pump.

  • Backwashing and Rinsing: Perform backwashing when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above its clean starting pressure, or when the transparent viewing window shows visible debris. After backwashing, always run the pump in 'Rinse' mode for 30-60 seconds before returning to 'Filter' mode.
  • Filter Media Replacement: Pool filter sand typically needs to be replaced every 3-5 years, depending on usage and water quality. If using filter balls, replace them as needed when filtration efficiency decreases.
  • Pump Pre-Filter Cleaning: Periodically check and clean the pump's pre-filter basket to remove leaves and large debris. This prevents clogging and maintains pump efficiency.
  • Winterizing: Before freezing temperatures, drain all water from the pump, filter, and hoses. Store the pump and filter in a dry, protected area. Consult your pool's specific winterizing guidelines.
