General Safety Instructions

WARNING: Failure to follow these safety instructions can result in serious injury or death.

1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Always wear a safety helmet with face shield or safety glasses.
  • Wear hearing protection (earplugs or earmuffs).
  • Use heavy-duty work gloves for hand protection.
  • Wear chainsaw protective pants or chaps.
  • Wear sturdy, non-slip work boots with steel toes.

2. Work Area Safety

  • Keep children, bystanders, and animals at least 50 feet (15 meters) away from the work area.
  • Do not operate the chainsaw in poor lighting conditions.
  • Ensure a clear and stable footing. Avoid operating on slippery or uneven surfaces.
  • Clear the work area of obstacles that could cause you to trip or lose balance.
  • Do not operate in wet conditions or rain.

3. Fuel Handling

  • Mix fuel outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
  • Use a 2-cycle engine oil/gasoline mixture as specified in the 'Assembly and Setup' section.
  • Do not smoke while mixing or handling fuel.
  • Store fuel in approved containers, away from ignition sources.
  • Never refuel a hot engine. Allow the chainsaw to cool down before adding fuel.

4. Operating Safety

  • Always hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands.
  • Ensure the chain brake is engaged when starting the chainsaw and when moving between cuts.
  • Never operate the chainsaw with one hand.
  • Do not overreach. Maintain proper footing and balance at all times.
  • Be aware of kickback. Avoid the guide bar tip contacting any object.
  • Turn off the engine before making any adjustments or clearing debris.

Assembly and Setup

1. Unpacking

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Verify that all parts are present according to the packing list. The package includes the chainsaw unit, 20-inch bar, 24-inch bar, and a toolkit.

2. Bar and Chain Installation

  1. Ensure the engine is off and the chain brake is engaged.
  2. Remove the side cover by loosening the two nuts.
  3. Place the guide bar onto the studs, ensuring the tension pin fits into the hole on the bar.
  4. Carefully loop the saw chain around the clutch drum and then into the groove of the guide bar. Ensure the cutting edges of the chain are facing the correct direction (refer to the arrow on the chain or bar).
  5. Replace the side cover, but do not fully tighten the nuts yet.

3. Fuel Mixing (2-Cycle Engine)

Your Baotree 62cc Chainsaw requires a mixture of unleaded gasoline and 2-cycle engine oil. The recommended mixing ratio is 25:1 (Gasoline:Oil).

  • Use fresh, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 89 or higher.
  • Use high-quality 2-cycle engine oil specifically designed for air-cooled engines.
  • Mix the fuel in an approved fuel container.
  • Shake the mixture thoroughly before pouring it into the chainsaw's fuel tank.

4. Chain Lubricant

Fill the chain oil tank with good quality bar and chain oil. This oil lubricates the chain and guide bar during operation, preventing excessive wear and heat buildup. Do not use waste oil or motor oil.

5. Chain Tension Adjustment

  1. With the side cover nuts slightly loose, use the chain tension adjustor screw (refer to Figure 1) to adjust the chain tension.
  2. The chain is correctly tensioned when it can be pulled freely around the guide bar by hand, but the drive links are still seated in the bar groove. There should be no sag on the underside of the bar.
  3. Once tension is correct, tighten the side cover nuts firmly.

Operating Instructions

1. Pre-Operation Checklist

  • Ensure all safety gear is worn.
  • Check fuel and chain oil levels.
  • Verify chain tension is correct.
  • Inspect the chain for sharpness and damage.
  • Ensure all nuts and bolts are tight.
  • Check that the chain brake functions correctly.

2. Starting the Chainsaw

Cold Start Procedure:

  1. Place the chainsaw on a firm, flat surface. Ensure the chain brake is engaged.
  2. Press the primer bulb 7-10 times until fuel is visible in the return line.
  3. Pull the choke control out to the FULL CHOKE position.
  4. Set the Engine ON/OFF switch to the ON position.
  5. Hold the chainsaw firmly with one hand on the front handle and pull the starting cord with the other hand until the engine fires (usually 1-3 pulls).
  6. As soon as the engine fires, push the choke control halfway in (HALF CHOKE position).
  7. Pull the starting cord again until the engine starts and runs smoothly.
  8. Once running, push the choke control fully in. Allow the engine to warm up for a few seconds before disengaging the chain brake and beginning work.

Warm Start Procedure:

  1. Ensure the chain brake is engaged.
  2. Set the Engine ON/OFF switch to the ON position.
  3. Pull the starting cord until the engine starts. If it doesn't start after a few pulls, use the cold start procedure with the choke.

3. Cutting Techniques

Always maintain a firm grip with both hands. Keep the chainsaw close to your body for better control. Be aware of the potential for kickback, especially when the tip of the guide bar contacts an object.

Figure 3: Proper stance and grip while cutting a log with the chainsaw.
  • Felling: The process of cutting down a tree. Requires careful planning of fall direction and escape routes. Always make a notch cut first, followed by a felling cut.
  • Limbing: Removing branches from a fallen tree. Work from the base of the tree towards the top, cutting smaller branches first. Be aware of branches under tension.
  • Bucking: Cutting a fallen log into shorter sections. Support the log to prevent pinching the guide bar. Make cuts from the top down or bottom up depending on log support.

4. Stopping the Chainsaw

To stop the engine, simply move the Engine ON/OFF switch to the OFF position.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of your chainsaw.

1. Daily Checks

  • Check chain sharpness and tension.
  • Inspect the guide bar for wear or damage.
  • Clean the air filter.
  • Check for fuel or oil leaks.
  • Ensure all controls operate smoothly.

2. Chain Sharpening

A sharp chain is essential for safe and efficient cutting. Sharpen the chain regularly using a round file of the correct diameter (refer to chain specifications) and a flat file for depth gauges. If unsure, have the chain professionally sharpened.

3. Guide Bar Maintenance

  • Clean the guide bar groove to remove sawdust and debris.
  • Flip the guide bar periodically to ensure even wear.
  • Check the guide bar rails for burrs and file them smooth if necessary.

4. Air Filter Cleaning

Remove the air filter cover and clean the air filter element. Depending on the type, it can be washed with warm soapy water, air-dried, or cleaned with compressed air. A clogged air filter reduces engine performance.

5. Spark Plug Inspection

Remove the spark plug and inspect it for wear, carbon buildup, or damage. Clean or replace as needed. Ensure the electrode gap is set correctly (refer to specifications).

6. Storage

Before storing the chainsaw for an extended period:

  • Drain all fuel from the tank or run the engine until it runs out of fuel.
  • Drain the chain oil tank.
  • Clean the entire chainsaw thoroughly.
  • Remove the spark plug and add a small amount of 2-cycle oil into the cylinder, then pull the starter cord a few times to distribute the oil. Reinstall the spark plug.
  • Store in a dry, well-ventilated area, out of reach of children.
