5. Setup

5.1 Connecting to Air Supply

  1. Ensure your air compressor is off and the air tank is drained.
  2. Connect a 1/4" NPT air hose to the tool's air inlet.
  3. Set the air compressor's regulator to the recommended operating pressure of 70-100 PSI. Do not exceed 100 PSI.
  4. Turn on the air compressor and allow it to build pressure.

5.2 Loading Fasteners

The FK5040 is compatible with 18-gauge brad nails and 18-gauge 1/4" crown staples.

  1. Disconnect the tool from the air supply.
  2. Pull back the magazine follower until it locks.
  3. Insert a strip of compatible brad nails or staples into the magazine. Ensure the fasteners are oriented correctly with the points facing forward.
  4. Release the magazine follower, allowing it to push the fasteners forward.
  5. Reconnect the tool to the air supply.

5.3 Adjusting Depth

The depth adjustment wheel allows you to control how deep the fasteners are driven into the material.

Figure 4: Tool-free depth adjustment mechanism.

  1. Rotate the depth adjustment wheel located near the nose of the tool.
  2. Turn the wheel clockwise for deeper penetration and counter-clockwise for shallower penetration.
  3. Test on a scrap piece of material to achieve the desired depth before working on your project.

6. Operation

6.1 Firing Modes

The FK5040 supports both single-sequential and continuous firing modes. Refer to the tool's specific mechanism for switching between modes, typically a selector switch or trigger action.

  • Single-Sequential Firing: Depress the safety nose against the workpiece, then pull the trigger to drive one fastener. Release the trigger and lift the tool to prepare for the next fastener.
  • Continuous Firing: Hold the trigger down, then depress the safety nose against the workpiece to drive a fastener. Lift the tool and depress the safety nose again to drive subsequent fasteners.

6.2 Using the Air-Blow Function

The built-in air-blow function helps keep your work surface clean.

  • Press the air-blow button (refer to Figure 1) to release a burst of air and clear dust or debris from your workpiece.

6.3 Adjusting Exhaust Direction

The rotatable exhaust cover allows you to direct airflow away from your face and work area.

Figure 5: Rotatable exhaust cover for directing airflow.

  • Simply rotate the exhaust cover to the desired direction.

7. Maintenance

7.1 General Maintenance

  • Lubrication: Apply a few drops of pneumatic tool oil into the air inlet before each use or after extended periods of non-use. This lubricates internal components and prolongs tool life.
  • Cleaning: Keep the tool clean and free of debris. Wipe down the exterior with a clean cloth. Do not use harsh solvents.
  • Air Filter: Regularly check and clean the air filter on your compressor to ensure a clean air supply to the tool.

7.2 Clearing Jams

The quick-release nose feature allows for easy, tool-free jam clearing.

Step-by-step guide on clearing a jammed nail: Disconnect air supply, open quick-release nose, clear jammed nails, close nose, reload, and reconnect air.

Figure 6: Steps for clearing a jammed fastener.

  1. Disconnect Air Supply: Always disconnect the tool from the air compressor before attempting to clear a jam.
  2. Open Quick-Release Nose: Locate the quick-release latch on the nose of the tool and open it.
  3. Clear Jammed Fasteners: Carefully remove any bent or jammed nails/staples from the nosepiece.
  4. Close Nose: Close the quick-release nose securely.
  5. Reload and Reconnect: Reload fasteners if necessary and reconnect the tool to the air supply.

  • Ensure safety nose is fully depressed against workpiece
Fasteners not driven to full depth
  • Low air pressure
  • Depth adjustment set too shallow
  • Incorrect fastener length for material
  • Increase air pressure
  • Adjust depth setting deeper (refer to Section 5.3)
  • Use appropriate fastener length for material thickness
Tool jams frequently
  • Damaged or incorrect fasteners
  • Insufficient lubrication
  • Worn driver blade
  • Use only recommended, undamaged fasteners
  • Lubricate tool regularly (refer to Section 7.1)
  • Contact customer support for driver blade replacement
