5. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your lapidary machine before first use.

5.1 Grinding Disc Installation

  1. Remove the nut and washer from the central shaft.
  2. Place the desired grinding disc flat and steady onto the grinding table.
  3. Put the washer and nut back onto the shaft sequentially, then tighten securely using the provided wrench.
Step-by-step guide for installing a grinding disc on the lapidary machine, showing removal of nut, placement of disc, and re-tightening.

5.2 Water Cooling and Drainage Setup

  1. Connect the water pump to a suitable water reservoir (not included).
  2. Attach the water pipe set, including the adjustable multi-angle nozzle, to the water pump and position it to direct water onto the center of the grinding disc.
  3. Locate the drain hose extending from the left side of the unit. Fully extend this hose to ensure water can flow freely through it. The hose should reach a length approximately equal to that of your forearm.
  4. Ensure the drain hose is positioned to direct wastewater into a suitable container or drain.

Figure 5.2: Proper extension of the drain hose for effective drainage.

Note: Once the drain hose is fully extended, water should flow through it freely, preventing the pan from filling up. When not in use, retract the hose back into the main unit to maintain a clean and organized workspace.

5.3 Power Connection

  • Connect the power cord to the machine and then to a grounded 110-120V AC/60Hz electrical outlet.

6. Operation

This section details how to operate your lapidary machine for grinding and polishing.

6.1 Basic Operation Steps

  1. Power On: Flip the main power switch to the ON position. The power indicator light will illuminate.
  2. Start Motor: Press the RUN button on the control panel.
  3. Adjust Speed: Turn the speed control knob to achieve the desired RPM. Start with a lower speed and gradually increase as needed.
  4. Select Rotation Direction: Use the FWD/REV switch to select the rotation direction (forward or reverse) as required for your task.
  5. Apply Water: Ensure the water pump is active and the adjustable nozzle is directing a steady stream of water onto the grinding disc.
  6. Grinding/Polishing: Gently place the material onto the rotating disc, applying light, consistent pressure. Move the material across the disc surface to ensure even grinding.
  7. Stop Motor: Press the STOP button to halt the disc rotation.

6.2 Using Different Grits

The machine comes with multiple diamond grinding discs for progressive material removal and finishing.

  • 180# Disc (Coarse): For aggressive material removal and initial shaping. Produces rough texture with clearly visible scratch patterns.
  • 320# Disc (Medium-Coarse): For refining shape and removing coarser scratches. Results in a semi-rough, fine sandpaper-like finish.
  • 600# Disc (Fine): For smoothing the surface and preparing for polishing. Leaves a smooth but slightly hazy finish, similar to frosted glass.
  • 1200# Disc (Very Fine): For pre-polishing and achieving a near-mirror effect with no detectable graininess.
Comparison of grinding effects using 180#, 320#, 600#, and 1200# diamond discs on gemstones, showing progressive smoothness.

7. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your lapidary machine.

  • Cleaning: After each use, clean the grinding table and splash guard to remove accumulated slurry and debris. Use a soft cloth and water. Ensure the machine is unplugged before cleaning.
  • Drainage System: Periodically check the drain hose for blockages and ensure it is clear for proper water flow.
  • Disc Care: Store grinding discs properly to prevent damage. Replace worn-out or damaged discs promptly to maintain grinding efficiency and safety.
  • Motor: The asynchronous induction motor is designed for long life and requires minimal maintenance. Keep the motor housing clean and free of dust.
  • Storage: Store the machine in a dry, clean environment when not in use.
