2. Safety Information

Please read and understand all safety warnings and instructions before installing or operating this product. Failure to follow these instructions could result in serious injury or property damage.

  • Electrical Safety: Always disconnect power to the pump before performing any maintenance or service. Ensure the pump is connected to a grounded outlet protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). Do not use extension cords.
  • Water and Chemicals: Keep all electrical components away from water. Handle pool chemicals according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Children: Keep children away from the pool equipment area.
  • Pressure: Do not operate the pump if any part of the system is damaged or leaking. Never attempt to open the filter tank or pump while the system is under pressure.
  • Installation: Ensure the pump is installed on a solid, level surface. Follow all local electrical and plumbing codes.

4. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and safety. Refer to the detailed installation video for visual guidance.

Video 1: AQUASTRONG Sand Filter Pump Installation Quick Guide. This video demonstrates the step-by-step process for setting up your sand filter pump.

4.1 Site Preparation

  • Choose a level, firm location for the pump and filter, preferably on a concrete slab or sturdy base.
  • Ensure the location is easily accessible for maintenance and away from direct sunlight if possible to prolong plastic component life.
  • Maintain adequate ventilation around the unit.

4.2 Assembling the Filter and Pump

  1. Secure the pump on the base: Place the pump and filter tank onto the provided base.
  2. Add filter media: Remove the multi-port valve from the top of the filter tank. Insert the standpipe with the sand guard. Carefully add 50 lbs of filter sand or 1.5 lbs of filter balls into the tank. Ensure the standpipe remains centered during this process.
  3. Install the valve: Clean the tank opening and the O-ring on the multi-port valve. Securely attach the 6-way valve to the top of the filter tank using the provided clamp. Ensure a tight seal to prevent leaks.
  4. Connect Hoses:
    • Connect the pump outlet to the "PUMP" inlet on the 6-way valve using the interconnecting hose.
    • Connect the pool's return line to the "RETURN" port on the valve.
    • Connect the pool's skimmer/main drain line to the pump's inlet.
    • Connect a backwash hose to the "WASTE" port on the valve.
  5. Apply Teflon Tape: For all threaded adapters, wrap 2-3 full turns of Teflon tape clockwise, covering the entire thread length before installation to ensure a watertight connection.

5.1 6-Way Multi-Port Valve Functions

IMPORTANT: Always turn off the pump before changing the valve position to prevent damage to the system.

  • FILTER: Normal filtration mode. Water flows through the filter media and returns to the pool.
  • BACKWASH: Reverses water flow through the filter to clean the filter media. Water is discharged through the waste port.
  • RINSE: Used after backwashing to flush out any remaining debris from the filter lines before returning to FILTER mode. Water is discharged through the waste port.
  • WASTE: Bypasses the filter and sends water directly out the waste port. Useful for vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste or lowering pool water level.
  • RECIRCULATE: Bypasses the filter and circulates water directly back to the pool. Useful for mixing chemicals without filtering.
  • CLOSED: Shuts off all flow to the filter and pump. Use this setting when performing maintenance on the pump or filter.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficiency of your sand filter pump.

  • Backwashing: When the pressure gauge reading increases by 8-10 PSI above its clean operating pressure, it's time to backwash.
    1. Turn off the pump.
    2. Set the 6-way valve to "BACKWASH".
    3. Turn on the pump and run until the water flowing out of the waste port is clear (typically 1-2 minutes).
    4. Turn off the pump.
    5. Set the 6-way valve to "RINSE".
    6. Turn on the pump and run for 30-60 seconds.
    7. Turn off the pump.
    8. Set the 6-way valve to "FILTER" and restart the pump for normal operation.
  • Cleaning the Strainer Basket: Periodically check and clean the pump's detachable strainer basket to remove large debris like leaves and hair.
    1. Turn off the pump and close any necessary valves to prevent water flow.
    2. Unscrew the pump lid and remove the basket.
    3. Empty and rinse the basket.
    4. Inspect the O-ring on the lid for damage and ensure it is clean before reassembling.
  • Winterization: Before freezing temperatures, drain all water from the pump, filter, and hoses. Store components in a dry, protected area.
