5. Operating Instructions

The AstrHori 9mm f/2.8 is a fully manual lens, requiring manual control over focus and aperture settings.

5.1 Manual Focus

  • To focus, rotate the focus ring on the lens until your subject appears sharp in the viewfinder or on the camera's LCD screen.
  • Many mirrorless cameras offer focus peaking or magnification assist features to aid in precise manual focusing. Refer to your camera's manual for details on enabling these features.
  • The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 20cm, allowing for close-up wide-angle shots.

5.2 Aperture Control

  • The aperture ring on the lens allows you to manually set the f-stop. Rotate the ring to select your desired aperture (from f/2.8 to f/16).
  • A wider aperture (smaller f-number like f/2.8) allows more light into the camera, useful for low-light conditions and creating shallow depth of field.
  • A narrower aperture (larger f-number like f/16) allows less light, increasing depth of field and is often used for landscapes.
  • When shooting with a manual lens, set your camera to Manual (M) or Aperture Priority (A) mode. In Aperture Priority, the camera will automatically set the shutter speed based on your chosen aperture and ISO.

5.3 Exposure Settings

Since this is a manual lens, you will need to manage exposure settings (ISO, shutter speed, aperture) manually or semi-manually through your camera's modes. Experiment with settings to achieve desired results, especially in challenging lighting conditions like night photography.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your lens.

  • Cleaning the Lens: Use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth specifically designed for optics. For stubborn smudges, use a small amount of lens cleaning solution applied to the cloth, not directly to the lens.
  • Dust Removal: Use a blower brush to remove dust particles from the lens surface before wiping. Avoid using compressed air, which can damage coatings.
  • Storage: Store the lens with both front and rear caps attached in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for extended periods, consider a dehumidified environment to prevent mold growth.
  • Handling: Avoid touching the glass elements with your fingers. Always hold the lens by its barrel.
  • Water Resistance: This lens is not water-resistant. Avoid exposure to rain, splashes, or high humidity.
