4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to properly install the crampons on your footwear:

  1. Step 1: Put on the Crampons. Hold the crampon with the spikes facing down. Stretch the silicone frame over the toe of your shoe or boot, then pull it back over the heel until it fits snugly around the sole. Ensure the spikes are centered under the sole.
  2. Step 2: Adjust for Best Fit. Once the silicone frame is on, gently adjust its position to ensure the spikes are evenly distributed and the frame sits securely around the edges of your footwear.
  3. Step 3: Thread the Strap. Take one adjustable strap. Thread it through the silicone hole on one side of the crampon, starting from the top and going to the bottom. Then, thread the strap across the metal ring located at the bottom of the crampon, from bottom to top.
  4. Step 4: Secure the Strap. Bring the strap across the top of your shoe or boot and thread it through the corresponding hole on the other side of the crampon.
  5. Step 5: Fasten the Velcro. Secure the strap using the Velcro closure, ensuring a tight but comfortable fit. This strap helps keep the crampon firmly in place during activity.
  6. Step 6: Repeat for the Second Crampon. Follow the same steps for the other crampon.

7. Maintenance

Proper maintenance will extend the life of your crampons:

  • Cleaning: After each use, especially in saltwater or muddy conditions, rinse the crampons with fresh water to remove dirt, salt, and debris.
  • Drying: Ensure the crampons are completely dry before storing them to prevent rust on the stainless steel components. Air dry them away from direct heat.
  • Storage: Store the crampons in the provided storage bag in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and chemicals. This prevents damage to the silicone and keeps the spikes sharp.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the silicone frame for tears or cracks and the chains and spikes for wear, bending, or rust. Replace the crampons if significant damage is observed.

8. Troubleshooting

  • Difficulty Putting On: If the crampons are difficult to stretch over your footwear, ensure you have selected the correct size according to the sizing guide. For very bulky boots, some stretching effort is normal. Try putting the toe section on first, then pulling the heel section over.
  • Straps Coming Undone: Ensure the adjustable straps are threaded correctly through the silicone holes and metal rings, and that the Velcro is firmly secured. The straps should be tight enough to hold the crampon in place without being uncomfortable.
  • Spikes Not Staying Centered: This can occur if the crampons are not properly sized or if the straps are too loose. Re-adjust the silicone frame and tighten the straps to ensure the spikes are centered under the sole of your footwear.
  • Reduced Traction: If you experience reduced traction, inspect the spikes for excessive wear or damage. Ensure no debris is lodged between the spikes or chains.
