Figure 5: Installation Steps Overview
This graphic illustrates the complete installation process from preparing the filter media to priming the unit.

  1. Prepare Filter Media: Open the fixing buckles on the filter lid and lift the lid. Remove the filter material basket(s). Rinse new filter media (e.g., ceramic rings, bio-balls, activated carbon) thoroughly with clean water before placing them into the baskets. Ensure filter floss is clean. Place the baskets back into the filter body in the correct order (typically mechanical at the bottom, then biological, then chemical). Close the lid and secure the fixing buckles.
  2. Connect Hoses: Connect the flexible hoses to the "IN" (inlet) and "OUT" (outlet) ports on the filter head. Rotate the nuts to fix them securely, ensuring no leaks.
  3. Install Inlet/Outlet Pipes: Connect the other ends of the hoses to the rigid inlet and outlet pipes. Position the inlet pipe (with strainer) and outlet pipe (with spray bar or nozzle) inside your aquarium. Secure them using suction cups or clips provided, ensuring they are firmly attached to the tank wall.
  4. Position Filter: Place the filter unit on a stable surface below the aquarium's water level. This is crucial for proper siphoning and efficient operation.
  5. Fill Aquarium and Prime Filter: Add water to the fish tank. The distance between the water surface and the edge of the fish tank should be less than 12cm. The outer barrel of the fish tank should be approximately 40cm below the water surface for optimal siphoning. Ensure the flow rate adjustment lever on the filter head is set to the maximum position. Pull the priming handle (often orange, located on top of the filter head) up and down 2-4 times to manually suck water into the filter bucket until it is full.
  6. Check for Leaks: Once the filter is full of water, carefully check all connections for any signs of leakage before plugging in the power cord.
  7. Power On: Plug the filter into a grounded electrical outlet. The filter should start operating, circulating water.

Operating Instructions

  • Starting the Filter: After successful setup and priming, plug in the power cord. The filter will begin to circulate water.
  • Adjusting Flow Rate: The filter features an adjustable flow control lever on the top of the head unit. Move this lever to increase or decrease the water flow rate according to your aquarium's needs. Ensure the flow is not too strong for delicate fish or plants.
  • Continuous Operation: For optimal water quality, the filter should run continuously 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Monitoring: Regularly check the water flow from the outlet. A reduced flow rate often indicates that the filter media or impeller needs cleaning.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and efficiency of your filter. Always disconnect power before performing any maintenance.

  • Weekly/Bi-weekly: Check the pre-filter sponges and mechanical media (filter floss) for clogging. Rinse them in old aquarium water (not tap water, to preserve beneficial bacteria) to remove accumulated debris.
  • Monthly/Bi-monthly:
    • Disconnect power and hoses.
    • Open the filter lid and remove media baskets.
    • Clean all mechanical media thoroughly. Replace filter floss if it's heavily soiled and cannot be cleaned effectively.
    • Rinse biological media (e.g., ceramic rings) gently in old aquarium water to remove sludge without destroying beneficial bacteria.
    • Clean the impeller and impeller housing. Remove any debris or mineral buildup.
    • Clean the inside of the filter canister and lid seals.
    • Reassemble the filter, ensuring all seals are properly seated and buckles are secured.
    • Reconnect hoses, prime the filter, and restart.
  • Chemical Media: Replace activated carbon or other chemical media every 2-4 weeks, as they become saturated and lose effectiveness.
