5. Setup and Installation

Important Safety Notice: Before proceeding with installation, ensure the main power to your facility is completely turned off at the circuit breaker. Installation should only be performed by qualified personnel or with extreme caution by experienced DIY enthusiasts. Always follow local electrical codes and safety guidelines.

5.1 Wiring the Current Sensors (CTs)

The energy meter uses three 500A clamp-on current transformers (CTs) to measure current. These CTs must be clamped around the live wires of the circuits you wish to monitor. Ensure the direction of the current flow through the CTs is consistent (e.g., arrow on CT pointing towards the load).

Wiring diagram for the plplaaoo WiFi Energy Meter, showing connections for both 3-phase and single-phase electricity systems. It illustrates how to connect the current clamps (CTs) to the main power lines (L1, L2, L3) and the neutral (N) line, and how the meter connects to the circuit breaker.

Figure 5.1: Wiring diagram for 3-Phase and Single-Phase electricity.

  1. Power Off: Disconnect all power to the electrical panel where the meter will be installed.
  2. Mount the Meter: Securely mount the main WiFi Energy Meter unit in a suitable location within the electrical panel or an adjacent enclosure.
  3. Connect Voltage Wires: Connect the voltage sensing wires from the meter to the appropriate live (L1, L2, L3) and neutral (N) terminals of your electrical system, as indicated in the wiring diagram (Figure 5.1). Ensure correct phase connection for accurate readings.
  4. Install CTs: Open each current clamp and place it around one of the live wires (L1, L2, L3) you intend to monitor. Ensure the clamp is fully closed and secured. The arrows on the CTs should point in the direction of current flow towards the load.
  5. Connect Antenna: Attach the antenna to the main unit and position it for optimal WiFi signal reception.
  6. Verify Connections: Double-check all wiring connections for tightness and correctness before restoring power.

5.2 Initial Power-Up and WiFi Configuration

Once the physical installation is complete:

  1. Restore Power: Turn on the main power supply to the electrical panel. The energy meter should power on.
  2. Download App: Download the dedicated mobile application (e.g., "Smart Life" or "Tuya Smart" app, refer to packaging or quick start guide for specific app name) from your smartphone's app store.
  3. Register/Login: Create an account or log in to the app.
  4. Add Device: Follow the in-app instructions to add a new device. This typically involves putting the meter into pairing mode (often by pressing a button on the device or cycling power) and connecting your phone to the meter's temporary WiFi hotspot, then configuring it to connect to your home/industrial 2.4GHz WiFi network.
  5. Device Renaming: Once connected, you can rename the device within the app for easy identification.
