3. Setup

3.1 Placement

The placement of your subwoofer significantly impacts its performance. Consider the following guidelines:

  • Corner Placement: Placing the subwoofer in a corner of the room can maximize its output and impact.
  • Wall Placement: Placing it along a wall, but not in a corner, can also provide good bass response.
  • Near Main Speakers: For seamless integration with your main speakers, try placing the subwoofer between or near them.
  • Avoid Obstructions: Ensure the subwoofer is not obstructed by furniture or other objects that could block sound waves.
  • Experimentation: The best placement often requires experimentation. Try different locations in your room to find the optimal spot for your listening preferences.

  • LFE Input: For receivers with a dedicated subwoofer output (LFE or Sub Out), connect a single RCA cable from the receiver's LFE output to the subwoofer's LFE input.
  • Stereo Line Inputs (Left/Right): If your receiver or pre-amplifier has stereo RCA outputs, connect them to the subwoofer's Left and Right Line Inputs.
  • Speaker Level Inputs/Outputs: For systems without dedicated subwoofer or line-level outputs, connect the speaker outputs from your amplifier to the subwoofer's Speaker Level Inputs. Then, connect the subwoofer's Speaker Level Outputs to your main speakers. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -).

3.3 Power Connection

Once all audio connections are made, connect the supplied power cord to the AC inlet on the rear panel of the subwoofer and then to a suitable wall outlet. Ensure the voltage selector (if present) is set correctly for your region.

4. Operating Instructions

After connecting your subwoofer, you can adjust its settings for optimal sound integration with your system.

4.1 Controls Overview

Refer to Image 3.2 for the location of these controls.

  • Volume: Adjusts the overall output level of the subwoofer. Start with a low setting and gradually increase it until the bass blends seamlessly with your main speakers.
  • Low Pass (Crossover): This control sets the upper frequency limit for the subwoofer. Frequencies above this setting will be rolled off. Adjust this to match the low-frequency capabilities of your main speakers. A common starting point is 80 Hz. If using a receiver with bass management, set the subwoofer's low pass filter to its maximum setting or bypass if possible, and manage the crossover through your receiver.
  • Phase: This switch (0°/180°) helps to align the subwoofer's output with your main speakers. Experiment with both settings to find the one that provides the most impactful and coherent bass at your listening position.
  • Power Mode: The subwoofer features an auto on/off function. When set to 'Auto', the subwoofer will power on when an audio signal is detected and enter standby mode after a period of inactivity. You can also manually switch it 'On' or 'Off'.

4.2 App Control

The ELAC DS103 subwoofer supports app control for convenient adjustment of settings. Refer to the ELAC website or app store for the specific application and instructions on how to connect and control your subwoofer via Bluetooth.

5. Maintenance

To ensure your ELAC DS103 subwoofer remains in excellent condition, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the cabinet. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, or waxes, as these can damage the finish.
  • Dusting: Regularly dust the driver cone and surrounding areas with a soft brush or cloth.
  • Placement: Keep the subwoofer away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive moisture. Ensure adequate ventilation around the amplifier panel.
  • Handling: When moving the subwoofer, lift it carefully from the base. Avoid dropping or subjecting it to strong impacts.
