Setup

Follow these steps to set up your sand filter pump system. Refer to the "How to Set Up a LANCHEZ Sand Filter Pump System" video for a visual guide.

  1. Attach Pump to Base: Slide the pump onto the integrated base until it clips securely into position. Ensure it is firmly seated.
  2. Install Drain Plug: Insert the filter drain plug into the bottom of the filter tank. Place a large flat gasket on the inside of the tank around the opening, then push the drain plug through from the outside. Secure it with another flat gasket and the cap on the outside.
  3. Position Filter Assembly: Place the filter assembly (white pipe with black base) into the center of the filter tank. Ensure it sits upright and stable.
  4. Add Filter Media: Carefully add your chosen filter media (sand or filter balls) into the tank around the central pipe. The 12in model requires 55 lbs of sand or 1.5 lbs of filter balls. The product includes 0.44lb filter balls. Ensure the filter media does not enter the central pipe.
  5. Attach Multi-Function Valve: Place the multi-function valve onto the top of the filter tank. Align the "align" arrow on the valve with the arrow on the tank. Ensure the O-ring is properly seated on the valve.
  6. Secure Valve with Clamps: Use the provided clamps and bolts to secure the multi-function valve to the filter tank. Tighten the bolts evenly to ensure a tight seal.
  7. Connect Hoses:
    • Connect the pump outlet to the multi-function valve's "Pump" inlet using the provided hose and hose clamps.
    • Connect your pool's return line to the multi-function valve's "Return" port.
    • Connect your pool's suction line to the pump's inlet.
    • Attach a hose to the "Waste" port for backwashing and draining.
  8. Install Pressure Gauge: Thread the pressure gauge into its designated port on the multi-function valve.
  9. Prime the Pump: Before starting, ensure the pump's filter basket is filled with water. This helps to prime the pump and prevent dry running.

Operating Instructions

The 6-way multi-function valve allows for various operational modes. Always turn off the pump before changing the valve position.

6-Way Valve Functions:

  1. Filter (Mode 1): This is the standard operating mode for daily filtration. Water is drawn from the pool, filtered through the sand/filter balls, and returned to the pool.
  2. Backwash (Mode 2): Used to clean the filter media. Water flows in reverse through the filter, dislodging trapped debris, which is then directed out through the waste port. Perform backwashing when the pressure gauge reading is significantly higher than its clean operating pressure (e.g., 8-10 PSI above normal).
  3. Rinse (Mode 3): Used after backwashing to flush out any remaining loose debris from the filter media before returning to filter mode. Run for about 30-60 seconds.
  4. Waste (Mode 4): Drains water directly from the pool through the waste port, bypassing the filter. Useful for lowering pool water level or vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste.
  5. Closed (Mode 5): Shuts off all flow to the filter. Use this setting when performing maintenance on the pump or filter, or when the pool is not in use for an extended period. Never shift handle while pump is running in this mode.
  6. Recirculate (Mode 6): Circulates pool water without passing it through the filter media. Useful for distributing chemicals quickly or when the filter is temporarily out of service.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficiency of your sand filter pump.

Cleaning the Filter Basket:

The pump features a large filter basket to capture larger debris before it reaches the main filter. Regularly check and clean this basket to maintain optimal flow and prevent pump strain.

  1. Turn off the pump and disconnect power.
  2. Open the clear lid of the filter basket.
  3. Remove the basket and empty any collected debris.
  4. Rinse the basket thoroughly with water.
  5. Replace the basket and secure the lid tightly.

Backwashing and Rinsing:

Perform backwashing and rinsing as described in the "Operating Instructions" section when the pressure gauge indicates increased pressure (typically 8-10 PSI above normal clean pressure) or when water clarity decreases.

Filter Media Replacement:

Sand filter media typically needs replacement every 3-5 years, depending on usage and water quality. Filter balls may last longer but should be inspected regularly.

Winterization (Antifreeze Function):

For colder climates, utilize the antifreeze function (Mode 2 on the valve, labeled "Antifreeze" or "Backwash") to prevent the filter valve from freezing in winter. Ensure the pump is completely drained and stored in a frost-free environment if not in use during winter.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your LANCHEZ Sand Filter Pump, refer to the following common troubleshooting tips:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Low Water FlowClogged filter basket, dirty filter media, air in system, restricted plumbing.Clean filter basket. Backwash/Rinse filter. Bleed air from pump. Check hoses for kinks or blockages.
Pump Not StartingNo power, tripped breaker, motor issue.Check power connection and circuit breaker. Consult a qualified electrician if motor issues are suspected.
Water LeaksLoose connections, damaged O-rings/gaskets, cracked housing.Tighten all connections. Inspect and replace damaged O-rings/gaskets. Contact support for cracked housing.
Cloudy Pool WaterInsufficient filtration time, dirty filter media, improper chemical balance.Increase filtration time. Backwash/Rinse filter. Test and adjust pool chemicals.
