WEN CP1216 12-Amp 16-Inch Corded Electric Chainsaw Instruction Manual
Model: CP1216
1. Introduction
Thank you for choosing the WEN CP1216 12-Amp 16-Inch Corded Electric Chainsaw. This manual provides essential information for the safe assembly, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your chainsaw. Please read and understand all instructions before use to ensure safe and efficient operation.
The WEN CP1216 is designed for cutting wood, branches, and small trees. Its 12-amp motor and 16-inch chain provide efficient cutting performance for various yard tasks. Key features include an auto-oiling system, kickback brake, and tool-free chain tensioning for user convenience and safety.
2. General Safety Information
WARNING: Always follow basic safety precautions to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and serious personal injury.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear safety glasses or goggles, hearing protection, heavy-duty gloves, and sturdy footwear. A hard hat and leg protection (chaps) are also recommended.
- Work Area: Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Clear away debris, obstacles, and bystanders, especially children and pets.
- Electrical Safety: Ensure the power source matches the chainsaw's requirements. Use only extension cords rated for outdoor use and of adequate gauge for the distance. Always use the cable strain relief notch to prevent accidental unplugging.
- Kickback Prevention: Understand and avoid kickback. Kickback can occur when the moving chain at the tip of the guide bar contacts an object, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut. Always maintain a firm grip with both hands and be aware of the guide bar tip.
- Proper Handling: Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands. Never operate with one hand. Keep your body balanced and feet firmly planted.
- Maintenance: Regularly inspect the chainsaw for damage, loose parts, or worn components. Ensure the chain is sharp and properly tensioned.
- Environmental Conditions: Do not operate the chainsaw in wet conditions or in the presence of flammable liquids or gases.

4. Setup and Assembly
Before operating your chainsaw, proper assembly and preparation are crucial.
4.1 Installing the Guide Bar and Chain
- Ensure the chainsaw is unplugged from the power source.
- Remove the chain cover by loosening the tool-free tensioning knob and lifting the cover.
- Carefully place the chain around the drive sprocket and then into the groove of the guide bar. Ensure the cutting edges of the chain are facing the correct direction (away from the motor on the top side of the bar).
- Position the guide bar studs through the holes in the guide bar.
- Replace the chain cover, ensuring the chain tensioning pin engages with the hole in the guide bar.
- Lightly tighten the tool-free tensioning knob to hold the cover in place, but do not fully tighten yet.
4.2 Filling the Bar and Chain Oil Reservoir
The chainsaw requires bar and chain oil for proper lubrication during operation. This oil is not included and must be purchased separately.
- Locate the oil reservoir cap, typically on the top of the chainsaw body.
- Unscrew the cap and fill the reservoir with high-quality bar and chain oil. Do not use motor oil or other lubricants, as they may not provide adequate lubrication and could damage the saw.
- Monitor the oil level through the oil level window during use and refill as needed.
- Securely replace the oil reservoir cap.
4.3 Adjusting Chain Tension
Correct chain tension is vital for safe and efficient operation. An improperly tensioned chain can derail or cause excessive wear.
- With the chain cover lightly tightened, use the tool-free tensioning knob to adjust the chain tension.
- The chain should be snug against the guide bar, but still able to be pulled freely by hand. There should be no more than 1/8 inch (3 mm) of slack at the center of the guide bar when lifted.
- Once the tension is correct, fully tighten the tool-free tensioning knob to secure the guide bar and chain cover.
- Check tension again after the first few cuts, as new chains can stretch.

5. Operation
Always review the safety guidelines before operating the chainsaw.
5.1 Connecting to Power
- Ensure the chainsaw's power switch is in the OFF position.
- Connect a suitable outdoor-rated extension cord to the chainsaw's power cord.
- Secure the extension cord using the cable strain relief notch to prevent accidental disconnection during use.
- Plug the extension cord into a grounded electrical outlet.
5.2 Starting and Stopping
- Starting: Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands. Press the safety lock-out button (if present) and then squeeze the trigger switch. The chain will begin to move.
- Stopping: Release the trigger switch. The chain should stop quickly.
5.3 Cutting Techniques
- Maintain Control: Always hold the chainsaw with both hands, keeping your thumbs wrapped around the handles.
- Stance: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, maintaining good balance.
- Cutting Angle: Make cuts at a comfortable angle, avoiding awkward positions.
- Avoid Kickback: Never cut with the tip of the guide bar. Be aware of branches that may spring back or shift during cutting.
- Cutting Small Branches: Use the bottom of the guide bar for cutting small branches.
- Cutting Larger Logs: For larger logs, make a relief cut on the underside first to prevent pinching, then complete the cut from the top.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your WEN chainsaw.
6.1 Chain Tension
Check chain tension frequently, especially during the first hour of operation with a new chain. Adjust as described in Section 4.3.
6.2 Bar and Chain Lubrication
The auto-oiling system lubricates the chain and bar. Regularly check the oil level in the reservoir and refill before each use or when the level is low. Ensure the oiler is functioning by observing oil spray from the chain during operation.
6.3 Chain Sharpening and Replacement
- A sharp chain is essential for efficient and safe cutting. A dull chain will produce fine sawdust instead of chips and require more force to cut.
- Sharpen the chain regularly using a suitable round file or take it to a professional.
- Replace the chain when it becomes too dull to sharpen, is damaged, or has stretched excessively. Refer to the specifications for the correct replacement chain type.
6.4 Cleaning
- Always unplug the chainsaw before cleaning.
- Remove the chain cover and clean out sawdust and debris from around the sprocket, guide bar groove, and chain.
- Clean the exterior of the chainsaw with a damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or immerse the saw in water.
7. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your chainsaw.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Chainsaw does not start | No power, faulty cord, safety lock-out not engaged. | Check power connection, extension cord. Ensure safety lock-out is pressed before trigger. |
| Chain does not move | Chain brake engaged, chain jammed, improper tension. | Disengage chain brake. Clear any obstructions. Adjust chain tension. |
| Poor cutting performance (sawdust instead of chips) | Dull chain, incorrect chain direction, improper chain tension. | Sharpen or replace chain. Verify chain is installed in the correct direction. Adjust chain tension. |
| Chain derails from guide bar | Loose chain tension, worn guide bar or chain. | Adjust chain tension. Inspect guide bar and chain for wear and replace if necessary. |
| No oil on chain | Empty oil reservoir, clogged oil port. | Refill oil reservoir. Clean oil port if clogged. |
