Introduction

The Olympus Stylus 840 is an 8.0-megapixel digital camera designed for ease of use and high-quality imaging. Featuring a 5x optical zoom lens with dual image stabilization, it helps capture clear photos even in challenging conditions. The camera includes a 2.7-inch HyperCrystal LCD for easy viewing and framing, along with in-camera editing functions like Perfect Fix. What's in the Box

Setup

1. Charging the Battery

Insert the supplied Lithium-Ion battery (LI-42B) into the charger. Connect the charger to a power outlet. The charging indicator light will show the charging status. Charge the battery fully before first use.

2. Inserting the Memory Card

The Olympus Stylus 840 uses xD Picture Cards for image storage. Open the memory card slot cover, typically located on the side or bottom of the camera. Insert the xD Picture Card with the correct orientation until it clicks into place. Close the cover securely.

Note: The camera does not include an xD Picture Card. A card with at least 2 GB capacity is recommended.

3. Setting Date and Time

Upon first power-on or after the battery has been removed for an extended period, you may be prompted to set the date and time. Follow the on-screen instructions using the camera's navigation buttons.

Operating the Camera

1. Powering On/Off

Press the POWER button to turn the camera on or off. The lens will extend when powered on.

2. Basic Photography

  1. Select a Shooting Mode: Use the mode dial or menu to select a suitable shooting mode (e.g., Auto, Program Auto, Scene Modes).
  2. Frame Your Shot: Use the 2.7-inch HyperCrystal LCD to compose your image.
  3. Zoom: Use the zoom lever (W/T) to adjust the 5x optical zoom. "W" for wide-angle, "T" for telephoto.
  4. Focus: Press the shutter button halfway down to focus. The camera will automatically detect faces and adjust focus accordingly (Face Detection feature).
  5. Capture: Press the shutter button fully down to take the picture.

3. Using the Flash

Press the flash button (usually marked with a lightning bolt icon) to cycle through flash modes: Auto, Red-eye Reduction, Fill-in Flash, and Flash Off. Select the appropriate mode for your lighting conditions.

4. Video Recording

To record a video, switch the camera to video mode (often indicated by a movie camera icon). Press the shutter button to start recording and press it again to stop. The camera supports video resolutions of 640 x 480 at 15 fps (for up to 10 seconds) and 320 x 240 at 15 fps (for up to 29 minutes).

5. Playback and Editing

Press the PLAY button to view your captured images and videos. Use the navigation buttons to scroll through them. The camera features "Perfect Fix" in-camera editing for basic adjustments to your photos.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning the Lens: Use a soft, lint-free cloth specifically designed for camera lenses. Do not use harsh chemicals.
  • Cleaning the LCD Screen: Gently wipe the screen with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Battery Care: Store the battery in a cool, dry place when not in use. Avoid extreme temperatures.
  • Storage: When storing the camera for extended periods, remove the battery and memory card. Store in a dry, dust-free environment.
  • Avoid Moisture: The camera is not water resistant. Keep it away from water and high humidity.

Troubleshooting
