6. Setup and Installation

Installation of the HOCANFLO macerating toilet system requires basic plumbing and electrical knowledge. If you are unsure, consult a qualified professional.

6.1 Site Preparation

  • Choose a location that allows for proper drainage and access for maintenance.
  • Ensure the floor is level and capable of supporting the weight of the toilet and its contents.
  • Verify that a dedicated electrical outlet (100-120V, 60Hz) is available within reach of the pump's power cord.
  • Plan the routing for the discharge pipe (minimum 3/4 inch diameter recommended for vertical runs, 1 inch for horizontal runs) and any additional inlet pipes (sink, shower, etc.).

6.2 Connecting the Macerator Pump

The macerator pump is designed to be connected directly to the toilet's outlet and can accept up to four additional inlets from other fixtures.

Figure 6.1: Macerator pump inlets and outlets.

  1. Connect the toilet outlet to the designated toilet inlet on the macerator pump using the provided fittings.
  2. Connect the discharge pipe from the pump's discharge outlet to your main drainage system. Ensure a slight downward slope for horizontal runs to aid gravity.
  3. If connecting other fixtures, attach their waste pipes to the available inlets (Sink, Shower, Laundry) on the pump. Cap any unused inlets.
  4. Ensure all connections are secure and watertight using appropriate clamps and sealants.

6.3 Water Supply Connection

Connect the toilet's water supply line to a cold water source. The toilet uses a standard 7/8" connection for the water tank inlet.

Close-up of the toilet's water inlet connection, showing a 7/8 inch threaded connection for the tank and a 1/2 inch connection for the supply line.

Figure 6.2: Water supply connection details.

6.4 Electrical Connection

  • Plug the macerator pump's power cord into a grounded electrical outlet.
  • Do not use extension cords.

6.5 Final Checks

  • Open the water supply valve and check for leaks at all connections.
  • Perform a test flush to ensure the pump activates and discharges waste properly.

7. Operation

Operating your HOCANFLO macerating toilet is similar to a standard toilet, with the added benefit of the macerating pump.

7.1 Flushing

The toilet features a dual flush system for water conservation:

  • Half Flush (0.8 GPF): For liquid waste. Press the smaller button on the top of the tank.
  • Full Flush (1.28 GPF): For solid waste. Press the larger button on the top of the tank.

Upon flushing, the macerator pump will automatically activate, grind the waste, and pump it through the discharge pipe. The pump will run for a short period until the waste is cleared, then automatically shut off.

7.2 Soft-Close Seat

The toilet seat is designed to close slowly and quietly. Gently push the seat down, and it will lower itself without slamming.

8. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficient operation of your macerating toilet system.

8.1 Cleaning

  • Clean the ceramic surfaces with standard non-abrasive toilet cleaners.
  • For the macerator pump, use a non-corrosive cleaner specifically designed for macerating units. Follow the cleaner's instructions.
  • To clean under the seat, utilize the quick-release feature by pressing the buttons at the hinges and lifting the seat straight up.

8.2 Micro Switch Replacement

The micro switch, which controls the pump's operation, is designed for easy replacement from the top of the unit without needing to dismantle the entire pump. Refer to the pump diagram (Figure 6.1) for the micro switch location.

  1. Disconnect power to the unit.
  2. Locate the micro switch access point on the top of the macerator pump.
  3. Carefully remove the cover or access panel.
  4. Disconnect the old micro switch and replace it with a new, compatible one.
  5. Secure the cover/panel and restore power.

8.3 Winterization (if applicable)

If the toilet is installed in an unheated area subject to freezing temperatures, it must be winterized to prevent damage.

  • Turn off the water supply to the toilet.
  • Flush the toilet to empty the tank and bowl.
  • Disconnect the discharge pipe from the pump and drain any remaining water.
  • Pour RV antifreeze into the bowl and flush to circulate it through the pump and discharge line.
  • Ensure the pump and all pipes are completely drained or filled with antifreeze.
