Setup
Unpacking and Components
Carefully unpack your InSinkErator Badger 5 garbage disposal. Verify that all components listed in the 'What's Included' section are present. The unit comes with a factory-installed power cord for convenience.

Installation Overview
The Badger 5 features Lift & Latch Technology, simplifying the installation process by allowing the disposal to be attached with two hands. If replacing an existing InSinkErator unit, the compact design often fits existing hardware, allowing for a quick and easy installation without changing plumbing locations.

Dishwasher Connection
If connecting a dishwasher, you must remove the dishwasher drain plug from the disposal unit. This is typically done by inserting a flathead screwdriver into the dishwasher inlet hole and tapping it with a hammer until the plug dislodges. Ensure the plug is removed before installation to prevent drainage issues.

Operating Instructions
The InSinkErator Badger 5 is a continuous feed garbage disposal, meaning you can add food waste while the unit is running. Follow these steps for optimal performance:
- Turn on a medium stream of cold water.
- Turn on the disposal unit.
- Slowly feed food waste into the disposal opening.
- Allow the disposal to run until all food waste is ground and flushed away. You will hear only the sound of the motor and running water.
- Turn off the disposal, then turn off the water.
Always use cold water when operating the disposal. Cold water keeps grease and fats in a solid state so they can be flushed through the plumbing system. Hot water can melt grease, causing it to accumulate and clog pipes.
Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and efficient operation of your Badger 5 garbage disposal.
- Regular Cleaning: To keep your disposal clean and odor-free, grind citrus peels (lemon, orange) or small amounts of ice cubes periodically. This helps to scrub the grind chamber and flush away residue.
- Cold Water Usage: Always run cold water before, during, and for at least 15 seconds after using the disposal to ensure all food particles are flushed through the drain.
- Avoid Certain Items: Do not put fibrous materials (celery, corn husks), large bones, fruit pits, metal, glass, or harsh chemicals down the disposal.
- Septic System Care: If connected to a septic system, ensure it is properly maintained. The Badger 5 is designed to be septic-safe.
Troubleshooting
If your disposal stops working or experiences issues, try these common troubleshooting steps:
Disposal Not Starting (Humming Sound)
If the motor hums but the disposal does not grind, it may be jammed. Turn off the disposal and the water. Use the Jam-Buster Wrench (included with your unit) to insert into the center hole on the bottom of the disposal. Rotate it back and forth until the jam is cleared. Remove the wrench, then press the red reset button on the bottom of the disposal. Turn on the water and then the disposal to test.
Disposal Not Starting (No Sound)
If the disposal makes no sound when turned on, check the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. Press it firmly. If it does not reset, check your home's circuit breaker. Ensure the unit is properly plugged into a working outlet if applicable.
Leaking
Leaks can occur from various points. Inspect all plumbing connections, including the discharge tube, dishwasher connection, and mounting assembly. Ensure all nuts and clamps are tightened securely. If the leak is from the bottom center of the disposal, the internal seals may have failed, indicating the unit needs replacement.
