5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Making Espresso
- Preheat: Ensure the machine is powered on and the single/double espresso buttons are solid, indicating it's preheated. For best results, attach the empty portafilter and run a short shot of hot water through it to warm it up.
- Grind Coffee: Use freshly ground coffee. For espresso, a fine grind is essential.
- Fill Portafilter: Place the desired filter basket (single or double) into the portafilter. Fill with ground coffee using the measuring scoop.
- Tamp Coffee: Use the tamper to press the coffee grounds firmly and evenly into the basket. Ensure the surface is level. Wipe any excess grounds from the rim of the portafilter.
- Attach Portafilter: Insert the portafilter into the group head and turn it firmly to the right until it is securely locked in place.
- Place Cup: Position your espresso cup(s) on the drip tray directly under the portafilter spouts.

5.2 Steaming Milk
- Prepare Milk: Fill a stainless steel milk pitcher with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy) up to just below the spout.
- Activate Steam: Press the steam button on the control panel. The button will flash as the machine heats up to steaming temperature, then remain solid when ready.
- Purge Steam Wand: Before inserting into milk, briefly turn the steam knob to release any condensed water. Turn it off immediately.
- Steam Milk: Insert the steam wand tip just below the surface of the milk. Turn the steam knob to the steam position. Angle the pitcher slightly to create a swirling motion.
- Froth and Heat: Keep the tip near the surface for frothing, then lower it deeper to heat the milk. Continue until the milk reaches the desired temperature (around 60-65°C or 140-150°F) and texture.
- Stop Steaming: Turn the steam knob to the off position, then remove the pitcher.
- Clean Steam Wand: Immediately wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth to remove any milk residue. Briefly purge the steam wand again to clear any milk from the nozzle.
6. Cleaning and Maintenance
Regular cleaning ensures optimal performance and longevity of your espresso machine.
6.1 Daily Cleaning
- Portafilter and Filter Baskets: After each use, remove the portafilter, discard coffee grounds, and rinse the portafilter and filter basket under running water.
- Drip Tray: Empty and rinse the drip tray daily or when the indicator shows it's full.
- Steam Wand: Always clean the steam wand immediately after use as described in Section 5.2.
- Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scourers.
6.2 Descaling
Over time, mineral deposits (limescale) can build up in the machine, affecting performance and taste. Descale your machine every 2-3 months, or more frequently if you have hard water or use it often.
- Prepare Descaling Solution: Follow the instructions on a commercial descaling solution suitable for espresso machines. Alternatively, you can use a solution of white vinegar and water (1 part vinegar to 2 parts water).
- Fill Water Tank: Pour the descaling solution into the water tank.
- Run Solution: Place a large container under the portafilter and steam wand. Run half of the solution through the group head by pressing the double espresso button multiple times. Then, run the remaining half through the steam wand.
- Rinse: After descaling, rinse the water tank thoroughly and fill it with fresh water. Run several full tanks of fresh water through both the group head and steam wand to remove any descaling solution residue.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your machine, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No coffee flow or very slow flow | Coffee grounds too fine or too much coffee; portafilter over-tamped; machine needs descaling. | Adjust grind size; use less coffee; tamp lighter; descale the machine. |
| Weak or watery espresso | Coffee grounds too coarse or too little coffee; insufficient tamping; machine not preheated. | Adjust grind size; use more coffee; tamp firmer; allow machine to fully preheat. |
| No steam from wand | Steam function not activated; steam wand clogged; machine not at steam temperature. | Press steam button; clean steam wand nozzle with a pin; wait for steam button to be solid. |
| Machine leaking water | Water tank not seated correctly; drip tray full; portafilter not sealed properly. | Ensure water tank is pushed down firmly; empty drip tray; ensure portafilter is locked in tightly and gasket is clean. |
| Machine not turning on | Not plugged in; power outlet issue. | Check power cord connection; try a different outlet. |
