4. Setup

Before first use, ensure both the transmitter and receiver units are fully charged using the provided Type-C charging cable. Connect the cable to the charging port on each unit and a standard USB power adapter (not included).

Initial Power-On:

  • Press and hold the power button on both the transmitter and receiver units until the screen illuminates.
  • The device will perform a brief self-test and display the main interface.

5. Operating Instructions

The ET636 offers various modes for different testing scenarios. Navigate through modes using the designated buttons on the device.

5.1. Cable Tracing and Location

This function is used to locate and trace network, telephone, and coaxial cables, including those buried underground or within walls.

  1. Connect the cable to be traced to the appropriate port on the transmitter unit.
  2. For underground or in-wall tracing, connect the red alligator clip to the cable and the black alligator clip to the grounding pile, then insert the grounding pile into the earth.
  3. Turn on the receiver unit and select the appropriate tracing mode (e.g., AUTO, MANUAL, NCV).
  4. Move the receiver unit along the suspected path of the cable. The signal strength indicator on the receiver's screen will increase as you get closer to the cable.

Figure 5.1: Checking Underground Cables

The ET636 can detect faults such as open circuits and short circuits in circuits buried in walls and underground. For optimal detection, use the red clip to clamp the cable and ground the black clip. Detection depth can reach up to 1.5 meters.

The device can also find open and short circuit faults in electric heating circuits under the floor, or locate water pipes.

5.2. Operating Modes (AUTO, MANUAL, NCV)

The ET636 receiver unit features three modes for adjusting sensitivity and detection:

  • AUTO Mode: Automatically adjusts sensitivity for general tracing.
  • MANUAL Mode: Allows the user to manually adjust sensitivity for precise tracing in complex environments.
  • NCV Mode: Non-Contact Voltage detection, used to detect the presence of AC voltage without direct contact.

5.3. Network Cable Testing

To test network cables for continuity, open circuits, short circuits, and crossover faults:

  1. Connect one end of the network cable to the RJ45 port on the transmitter unit.
  2. Connect the other end of the network cable to the RJ45 port on the receiver unit.
  3. Select the network cable test function on the transmitter. The screen will display the wiring status (e.g., open, short, crossover) and cable length.

5.4. Optical Power Meter (OPM)

The OPM function measures the power of optical signals in fiber optic cables.

  1. Ensure the optical fiber connector is clean.
  2. Connect the fiber optic cable to the OPM port on the transmitter unit. The ET636 is compatible with ST, SC, and FC interfaces.
  3. Select the OPM function. The screen will display the measured optical power in dBm.

5.5. Visual Fault Locator (VFL)

The VFL function uses a red laser to visually locate breaks, bends, or poor connections in fiber optic cables.

  1. Connect the fiber optic cable to the VFL port on the transmitter unit.
  2. Activate the VFL function. A bright red light will be emitted into the fiber.
  3. Observe the fiber along its path. Any breaks or significant losses will be visible as a leakage of red light. The laser can trace up to 10KM.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your ET636.

Cleaning:

  • Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Keep the optical ports clean and free of dust. Use specialized fiber optic cleaning tools if necessary.

Storage:

  • Store the device in its carrying case when not in use to protect it from dust and physical damage.
  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your ET636, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Device does not power on.Low battery or no charge.Charge the device fully using the Type-C cable.
Inaccurate cable length measurement.Incorrect cable type selected or cable damage.Ensure the correct cable type is selected. Inspect the cable for physical damage.
No signal during cable tracing.Transmitter not connected or powered on; receiver too far; incorrect mode.Verify transmitter connection and power. Ensure receiver is within range. Switch to AUTO or MANUAL mode and adjust sensitivity.
