- Measurement: Connect the test leads as described in the specific test sections below and press the 'TEST' button to initiate measurement.
- Reading Display: The measurement value will be shown on the large LCD display.
- Power Off: Rotate the function switch back to 'OFF' when not in use.
5.2 Earth Resistance Measurement (2/3/4 Pole)
This function measures the earth resistance of various grounding systems.
- Connect the test leads to the E/COM, S, and ES terminals as required for 2, 3, or 4-pole measurement.
- Insert the auxiliary grounding rods into the earth at appropriate distances from the grounding electrode under test.
- Select the 'EARTH RESISTANCE' function and an appropriate range (e.g., 2Ω, 20Ω, 200Ω, 2000Ω).
- Press the 'TEST' button. The instrument will display the earth resistance value.

Figure 5.1: The instrument automatically detects and warns of series interference voltage during ground resistance and soil resistivity tests, providing a prompt if an abnormal test result is detected.
5.3 Soil Resistivity Measurement (DY4100B Only)
The DY4100B model can measure soil resistivity using the Wenner method (quadrupole measurement). Soil resistivity refers to the resistance of soil to electric current per unit length and unit cross-sectional area.
- Connect the test leads to the H/V, S, ES, and E/COM terminals.
- Insert four auxiliary grounding rods into the earth at equal intervals (e.g., 1-30 meters) in a straight line.
- Select the 'SOIL RESISTIVITY' function and an appropriate range.
- Press the 'TEST' button. The instrument will display the soil resistivity value (ρ).

Figure 5.3: The DY4100B instrument set up for a soil resistivity measurement in an outdoor field, demonstrating the practical application of the quadrupole measurement method.
5.4 AC Voltage Measurement
The instrument can measure AC voltage to ground (0-600VAC).
- Select the 'EARTH VOLTAGE AC600V' function.
- Connect the test leads to the appropriate terminals (e.g., E/COM and V).
- The AC voltage reading will be displayed.
5.5 Photovoltaic Voltage Measurement
The DY4100B model can measure photovoltaic DC voltage (up to 1500V).
- Select the 'PHOTOVOLTAIC VOLTAGE DC1500V' function.
- Connect the test leads to the appropriate terminals (e.g., E/COM and V) across the photovoltaic module.
- The DC voltage reading will be displayed. This function allows for accurate and quick determination of the open circuit voltage of photovoltaic modules.

6. Maintenance
6.1 Battery Replacement
When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries as described in Section 4.1. Always use 6 new AA batteries for optimal performance.
6.2 Cleaning
To clean the instrument, wipe the casing with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the instrument is powered off and disconnected from all test leads before cleaning. The protective cover design helps keep the instrument free from dust and moisture.
7. Troubleshooting
- No Display/Instrument Not Powering On: Check battery installation and ensure batteries are not depleted. Replace if necessary.
- Inaccurate Readings: Verify test lead connections, ensure auxiliary grounding rods are properly inserted, and check for strong interference voltage (refer to Figure 5.1). Ensure the correct function and range are selected.
- 'OL' or Overload Indication: The measured value exceeds the selected range. Switch to a higher range or verify the circuit conditions.
- Unstable Readings: Ensure good contact with the earth for grounding rods and test leads. Environmental factors like dry soil can affect stability.
