Figure 4.1: Front and Rear Panel Diagram of the S.M.S.L VMV A1pro. This image illustrates the layout of controls and connections, including the Function knob, Remote window, Indicator light, Display screen, Line input, MONO input, Speaker Right output, Speaker Left output, and AC power input.
Front Panel
- Function Knob: Used for volume control and menu navigation.
- Remote Window: Infrared receiver for the remote control.
- Indicator Light: Displays operational status.
- Display Screen: Shows current settings and status.
Rear Panel
- Line Input (RCA): Stereo analog audio input.
- MONO Input (XLR): Balanced mono audio input, used for bridged mono mode.
- Speaker Right Output: Connects to the right speaker.
- Speaker Left Output: Connects to the left speaker.
- AC Power IN: Connects to the main power supply.
5. Setup
5.1 Placement
Place the VMV A1pro on a stable, flat surface. Ensure adequate space around the unit for proper ventilation to prevent overheating. Avoid placing it near strong electromagnetic fields or other heat-generating devices.
5.2 Connections
- Speaker Connection: Connect your speakers to the corresponding Left and Right speaker output terminals on the rear panel. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -). For Mono BTL mode, refer to Section 6.2.
- Audio Input:
- RCA (Line In): Connect your audio source (e.g., DAC, preamplifier) to the RCA Line Input terminals.
- XLR (MONO In): For mono-bridged operation, connect a balanced mono signal to the XLR MONO Input.
Note: The VMV A1pro has an input sensitivity of approximately 0.75V. Ensure your source device's output voltage is compatible to avoid input overload and sound distortion. If using a DAC with higher output (e.g., 2.5V-5.0V), consider using a preamplifier with adjustable output or a matching DAC like the S.M.S.L D1pro.
- Power Connection: Connect the provided power line to the AC Power IN socket on the rear panel, then plug it into a suitable wall outlet.
6. Operating Instructions
6.1 Power On/Off
To power on the amplifier, press the power switch located on the rear panel. The display screen will illuminate. To power off, press the switch again.
6.2 Volume Control
Rotate the Function knob on the front panel to adjust the volume level. The PGA2311 volume chip ensures precise and low-distortion volume adjustment. You can also use the remote control for volume adjustments.
6.3 Input Selection
Press the Function knob briefly to cycle through available input sources (RCA Line In, XLR MONO In). The selected input will be shown on the display.
6.4 Mode Selection (Stereo / Mono BTL)
The VMV A1pro supports both stereo and mono-bridged (BTL) operation. The mode is typically selected automatically based on the input and output connections, or via a menu option if available. Refer to the display for the current operating mode.

Figure 6.1: Illustration of the S.M.S.L VMV A1pro in Stereo Pure Power Amp Mode (top) and two units configured for XLR Input Mono Mode (bottom). This demonstrates how two amplifiers can be used together to achieve increased power output for high-power speakers.
6.4.1 Stereo Mode
In stereo mode, the amplifier provides two channels of amplification for a standard stereo setup. Connect your audio source to the RCA Line Input and your left and right speakers to the corresponding outputs.
6.4.2 Mono BTL (Bridged-Tie-Load) Mode
For significantly increased power output, two VMV A1pro units can be configured in Mono BTL mode. Each amplifier then drives a single speaker, effectively quadrupling the power output compared to a single unit in stereo mode. This is ideal for driving large, demanding speakers. Connect a balanced mono signal to the XLR MONO Input of each amplifier and connect each amplifier to a single speaker according to the BTL wiring diagram (refer to Figure 4.1 for rear panel connections showing Mono BTL wiring).
