5. Installation

The DAYTECH AJ-762 Smoke Detector offers two installation methods: screw mounting or magnetic adhesive mounting.

5.1 Choosing a Location

  • Install smoke detectors on every level of your home, including basements and attics.
  • Place detectors inside each bedroom and outside every sleeping area.
  • Mount on the ceiling in the center of the room or hallway. If ceiling mounting is not possible, mount on a wall, 10-30 cm (4-12 inches) from the ceiling.
  • Avoid placing detectors near windows, doors, or air vents where drafts could interfere with smoke detection.
  • Keep detectors away from kitchens, bathrooms, and garages to prevent false alarms from cooking fumes, steam, or exhaust.

5.2 Magnetic Adhesive Mounting (Recommended for easy installation)

  1. Clean the ceiling or wall surface where the detector will be installed. Ensure it is dry and free of dust or grease.
  2. Peel off the protective film from one side of the 3M adhesive pad and attach it firmly to the back of the magnetic mounting plate.
  3. Peel off the protective film from the other side of the 3M adhesive pad and press the magnetic mounting plate firmly onto the chosen ceiling or wall location for at least 30 seconds.
  4. Align the smoke detector with the magnetic mounting plate and attach it. The magnets will hold the detector securely in place.

5.3 Screw Mounting

  1. Choose a suitable location on the ceiling or wall.
  2. Use the mounting plate as a template to mark the positions for drilling two holes.
  3. Drill the holes and insert the wall plugs.
  4. Secure the mounting plate to the ceiling/wall using the provided screws.
  5. Align the smoke detector with the mounting plate and twist it clockwise until it clicks into place.

6. Operation

6.1 Initial Activation

The smoke detector is active once installed. The integrated battery is designed for 10 years of operation. A small LED indicator will flash approximately every 50 seconds to confirm the unit is functioning correctly.

6.2 Testing the Alarm

It is recommended to test your smoke detector weekly to ensure proper functionality.

  • Press and hold the large central test/mute button on the detector for a few seconds.
  • The alarm will sound loudly (85 dB) and the LED will flash rapidly.
  • Release the button to stop the alarm. If the alarm does not sound, refer to the Troubleshooting section.

6.3 Muting False Alarms

In case of a non-emergency alarm (e.g., from cooking fumes), you can temporarily silence the alarm:

  • Press the central test/mute button once.
  • The alarm will be silenced for approximately 10 minutes. The LED will continue to flash every 10 seconds during this period.
  • After the mute period, if smoke is still detected, the alarm will reactivate.

6.4 Low Battery Warning

When the battery is nearing the end of its 10-year life, the detector will emit a 'DI' sound and a red LED will flash every 50 seconds. This indicates that the detector needs to be replaced.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning

Dust and debris can affect the performance of your smoke detector. Clean it regularly:

  • Gently vacuum the exterior of the detector using a soft brush attachment.
  • Wipe the surface with a slightly damp cloth. Do not use cleaning sprays or solvents.
  • Clean at least once a month, or more frequently if dust accumulates quickly.

7.2 Battery Replacement

The DAYTECH AJ-762 Smoke Detector features a sealed 10-year battery that is not user-replaceable. When the low battery warning sounds, the entire unit must be replaced.

7.3 Detector Replacement

Smoke detectors have a limited lifespan. It is recommended to replace your DAYTECH AJ-762 Smoke Detector every 10 years from the date of manufacture or installation, even if it appears to be functioning correctly.
