4.2 Hard Drive Installation
The enclosure features a tray-less design for easy installation and removal of 3.5-inch SATA hard drives.
- Ensure the enclosure is powered off and disconnected from your computer.
- Gently open the front door of the desired drive bay.
- Slide your 3.5-inch SATA hard drive into the bay until it is firmly seated.
- Close the front door. The safety lock design helps secure the drive. Use the provided safety keys to lock the bays if desired, preventing accidental ejection.
- Repeat for additional hard drives.

4.3 RAID Configuration
The ORICO enclosure supports 8 RAID modes. Configuration is typically done via DIP switches located on the rear panel. Refer to the table below for specific settings and their implications. Note: Configuring RAID modes will reinitialize the drives, leading to data loss. Back up any important data before proceeding.

Figure 4.3: Overview of the 8 supported RAID modes and their characteristics.
Important Note: RAID combinations are based on the minimum capacity of the hard drive. For optimal performance and capacity utilization, it is strongly advised to use hard drives of the same capacity when creating a RAID array.
4.4 Connecting to Your Computer
- Connect the power cable to the enclosure's power input and then to a power outlet.
- Connect the USB 3.0 cable from the enclosure's USB-B port to an available USB-A port on your computer.
- Power on the enclosure using the power switch on the rear panel.

4.5 Initial Disk Management
After connecting and powering on the enclosure, your operating system may detect new hardware. For new hard drives or after a RAID configuration, you will need to initialize, partition, and format the disks using your operating system's disk management utility (e.g., Disk Management in Windows, Disk Utility in macOS).
5. Operating the Enclosure
5.1 Power On/Off
Use the power switch on the rear of the enclosure to turn the device on or off. Always ensure safe removal of the device from your computer before powering off to prevent data corruption.
5.2 Data Transfer
Once the drives are recognized and formatted by your operating system, you can begin transferring data. The USB 3.0 interface provides high-speed data transfer, making it efficient for large files and backups.

Figure 5.1: Demonstrates the 5Gbps high-speed data transfer capability of the enclosure.
5.3 LED Indicators
Each drive bay is equipped with an LED indicator light. These lights provide visual feedback on the working status of the installed hard drives. A solid light typically indicates power and connection, while a blinking light usually signifies data activity.
5.4 Intelligent Sleep Mode
The enclosure features an intelligent sleep mode. If there is no data activity for 10 minutes, the device will automatically enter sleep mode to conserve power and extend the lifespan of the hard drives. It will automatically wake up upon data access.
6. Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your ORICO enclosure.
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the enclosure. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosols. Ensure vents are free from dust accumulation.
- Ventilation: Always ensure the enclosure has proper airflow around it. Do not place it in enclosed spaces or near heat sources. The built-in fan requires unobstructed air intake and exhaust.
- Data Backup: Regularly back up critical data stored on the enclosure to another location, especially if not using a redundant RAID mode.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your ORICO 4 Bay RAID Hard Drive Enclosure, please refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Enclosure not detected by computer | Loose USB cable connection, power off, driver issue, faulty USB port. | Check USB cable connection. Ensure enclosure is powered on. Try a different USB port or cable. Restart computer. |
| Hard drives not appearing in OS Disk Management | Drives not properly seated, RAID configuration not complete, drives uninitialized/unformatted. | Ensure drives are fully inserted. Verify RAID configuration via DIP switches. Initialize, partition, and format drives in Disk Management. |
| Drives or enclosure overheating | Poor ventilation, excessive workload, faulty fan. | Ensure adequate space around the enclosure for airflow. Reduce continuous heavy data transfer if possible. Check if the cooling fan is operating. |
| Drives periodically disappear from computer | Unstable USB connection, power fluctuations, drive issues. | Try a different USB cable or port. Ensure stable power supply. Check hard drive health. Update USB drivers on your computer. |
| RAID configuration not working as expected | Incorrect DIP switch settings, incompatible drives, drives not initialized after RAID setup. | Double-check DIP switch settings against the manual. Ensure all drives are of the same capacity and type for RAID. Re-initialize and format the RAID volume. |
If the problem persists after attempting these solutions, please contact ORICO customer support for further assistance.
