4. Setup
Follow these steps to set up your Modi+ DAC:
4.1. Power Connection
- For USB Source: Connect the included USB to Micro USB cable from your computer to the USB input on the Modi+. The Modi+ will draw power directly from the USB connection.
- For Optical or Coaxial Source, or Low-Power Devices (Phones/Tablets): Connect the included USB to Micro USB cable from the Modi+ to the 5V USB wall power adapter, then plug the adapter into a wall outlet. This provides dedicated power for these input types.
4.2. Connecting Audio Sources
The Modi+ offers three digital input options:
- USB Input: Connect a USB cable from your computer, streamer, or other compatible USB audio source to the USB input on the Modi+.
- Coaxial SPDIF Input: Connect a coaxial digital cable from your CD player, TV, or other source to the Coaxial SPDIF input.
- Toslink SPDIF Input: Connect an optical digital cable from your TV, game console, or other source to the Toslink SPDIF input.

4.3. Connecting to an Amplifier/Headphone Amp
The Modi+ provides a single-ended RCA analog output. Connect RCA cables from the Modi+'s output to the analog input of your amplifier, powered speakers, or headphone amplifier. The Modi+ outputs a line-level signal, meaning it requires an amplifier to drive speakers or headphones.
4.4. Driver Installation
For most modern operating systems (macOS, Windows 8 and later, Linux), the Modi+ is a plug-and-play device and does not require specific driver installation. It will be recognized as an audio output device automatically. Note: The Modi+ will not work with Windows 7 or earlier operating systems.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1. Power On/Off
The Modi+ does not have a dedicated power switch. It powers on automatically when connected to a power source (either via USB from a computer or the wall adapter). To power off, disconnect the power source.
5.2. Input Selection
Use the toggle button located on the front panel of the Modi+ to cycle through the available digital inputs (USB, Coaxial, Optical). Indicator lights next to the button will illuminate to show the currently selected input.
5.3. Volume Control
The Modi+ is a fixed-output DAC and does not have its own volume control. Volume must be controlled by your source device (computer, streamer) or your connected amplifier/preamplifier.
6. Troubleshooting
- No Sound:
- Ensure the correct input is selected on the Modi+ (check indicator lights).
- Verify that the Modi+ is receiving power.
- Check all cable connections (digital input, RCA output).
- Confirm that your amplifier or powered speakers are turned on and set to the correct input.
- On your computer, ensure the Modi+ is selected as the default audio output device.
- Device Not Recognized (USB):
- Try a different USB port on your computer.
- Ensure your operating system is Windows 8 or later, macOS, or a compatible Linux distribution.
- Restart your computer.
- Intermittent Audio:
- Check for loose cable connections.
- Ensure the digital source is providing a stable signal.
- If using optical, ensure the cable is not bent sharply.
