3. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of your sand filter pump. Follow these steps carefully.

3.1 Site Selection

• Place the filter system on a firm, level surface, preferably concrete or a similar stable base.
• Ensure the location is well-drained and protected from excessive moisture.
• Position the pump as close to the pool as possible to minimize friction loss from long hose runs.
• Allow sufficient space around the filter for maintenance and service.

3.2 Assembly Steps

1. Attach Base: Secure the pump and filter tank to the base support.
2. Install Drain Plug: Ensure the drain plug at the bottom of the filter tank is securely tightened.
3. Add Filter Media:
   • Remove the top cover of the filter tank.
   • Place the filter assembly (laterals) inside the tank.
   • Carefully add the specified amount of filter sand (150 lbs) or filter balls (6.2 lbs). Ensure the central pipe remains upright.
   • Distribute the media evenly.
4. Install 6-Way Valve: Place the 6-way valve onto the top of the filter tank, aligning the central pipe with the valve's opening. Secure it with the flange clamp and O-ring.
5. Connect Pump to Filter: Connect the pump's discharge port to the "PUMP" port on the 6-way valve using the provided hose and fittings.
6. Connect Pool Hoses:
   • Connect the pool's skimmer/suction line to the pump's intake port.
   • Connect the pool's return line to the "RETURN" port on the 6-way valve.
   • Connect a backwash hose to the "WASTE" port on the 6-way valve, directing it to an appropriate drainage area.
7. Install Pressure Gauge: Screw the pressure gauge into the designated port on the 6-way valve.

3.3 Priming the Pump

Before starting the pump, it must be primed to ensure it is filled with water and can operate correctly.

1. Ensure the pool water level is adequate.
2. Open all suction and return valves on your pool.
3. Remove the strainer basket lid on the pump. Fill the strainer basket housing with water until it overflows.
4. Replace the strainer basket lid, ensuring it is securely tightened to prevent air leaks.
5. Set the 6-way valve to the "FILTER" position.
6. Connect the pump to a grounded electrical outlet.
7. Turn on the pump. It may take a few minutes for the pump to prime and for water to flow. If the pump does not prime within 5 minutes, turn it off, re-prime, and check for air leaks in the suction line.

4.1 6-Way Multi-Port Valve Functions

The 6-way valve allows you to perform various operations. Always turn off the pump before changing the valve position to prevent damage.

• FILTER: (Normal filtration) Water is pumped through the filter media, trapping debris, and returned to the pool. This is the primary operating mode.
• BACKWASH: (Cleaning filter) Reverses the water flow through the filter to flush trapped debris out the waste port. Used when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above its clean starting pressure.
• RINSE: (After backwash) Used for a short period after backwashing to flush any remaining dirty water from the filter lines to waste, preventing it from returning to the pool.
• WASTE: (Bypasses filter) Drains water directly from the pool to the waste port without passing through the filter. Useful for vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste or lowering pool water level.
• CLOSED: (Shuts off flow) Stops all water flow to the filter or pump. Never operate the pump with the valve in the CLOSED position.
• RECIRCULATE: (Bypasses filter) Circulates water through the pump and valve, returning it to the pool without passing through the filter media. Useful for chemical distribution or when the filter is temporarily out of service.

4.2 Programmable Timer

The built-in 24-hour programmable timer allows you to set specific operating times for your pump, ensuring consistent filtration and energy efficiency.

• Refer to the specific timer instructions provided with your unit for detailed programming steps.
• Typically, you will set "ON" and "OFF" times for the pump's operation.
• Adjust filtration duration based on pool size, usage, and water quality. A common recommendation is 8-12 hours per day.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your LANCHEZ sand filter pump.

5.1 Backwashing and Rinsing

Backwashing cleans the filter media. Perform backwashing when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above its clean starting pressure, or when water flow to the pool noticeably decreases.

1. Turn off the pump.
2. Set the 6-way valve to the "BACKWASH" position.
3. Turn on the pump. Observe the water flowing out of the waste port (if visible) or through a sight glass (if equipped). Backwash for 2-3 minutes, or until the water runs clear.
4. Turn off the pump.
5. Set the 6-way valve to the "RINSE" position.
6. Turn on the pump. Rinse for 30-60 seconds to flush any remaining dirty water from the lines.
7. Turn off the pump.
8. Set the 6-way valve back to the "FILTER" position.
9. Turn on the pump to resume normal filtration. Check the pressure gauge; it should now be lower.

5.2 Cleaning the Strainer Basket

The pump's strainer basket collects larger debris before it reaches the impeller. Inspect and clean it regularly, especially if flow decreases.

1. Turn off the pump and close any necessary valves to prevent water flow.
2. Unscrew the clear cover of the strainer basket.
3. Remove the basket and empty any debris.
4. Rinse the basket thoroughly with water.
5. Inspect the O-ring on the cover for cracks or wear; replace if necessary.
6. Place the basket back into the housing, ensuring the O-ring is properly seated, and securely tighten the clear cover.
7. Open valves and re-prime the pump if necessary before restarting.

5.3 Winterization

Before freezing temperatures arrive, properly winterize your filter system to prevent damage.

• Drain all water from the pump, filter tank, and all plumbing lines. Remove drain plugs.
• Remove the pressure gauge and store it in a dry place.
• Remove the 6-way valve and store it in a dry, protected area.
• If using sand, it can remain in the tank, but ensure all water is drained. If using filter balls, remove and clean them for storage.
• Store the pump and filter tank in a dry, frost-free location.
