Descaling the Opal
Descaling removes mineral deposits and should be performed monthly, or more frequently depending on water hardness. If water hardness is an issue, using distilled water is recommended.
- Prepare for Descaling:
- Remove the water filter and replace it with the reservoir screen intake cap.
- Drain the Opal by unhooking the top drain hoses on the back of the unit and removing the plugs. Allow all water to drain. Reinsert plugs and reattach hoses once drained.
- Add Descaling Solution: Fill the reservoir with white vinegar up to the MAX FILL line, or use the official Opal Cleaning Kit solution.
- Initiate Cleaning Cycle: Plug in the Opal and hold the Clean button for 3 seconds. The "Cleaning" indicator will light up.
- Soak: After 3 minutes, the water will stop circulating, and the "Cleaning" light will turn off. Let the unit sit for 18 hours to soak.
- Manual Cleaning (during soak): While soaking, dip a cloth in the solution and wipe the inner walls. Use a cotton swab for hard-to-reach cracks. Rinse the cloth with clean water and wipe again to remove any solution.
- Rinse Cycles: After soaking, drain the unit. Add 5 cups of fresh water to the reservoir and press the Clean button to initiate a rinse cycle. Repeat this rinsing process two more times, draining the unit and adding fresh water each time.
- Final Steps: Reattach the drain hoses, fill the ice maker with fresh water, and press the Power button to resume ice making.
