3. Setup and Installation

3.1 Unpacking

Carefully remove the switch and all accessories from the packaging. Inspect the device for any signs of damage during transit.

3.2 Mounting Options

The GS728TXUP switch can be installed on a desktop or mounted in a standard 19-inch equipment rack.

Desktop Installation:

Place the switch on a flat, stable surface. Ensure adequate ventilation around the device to prevent overheating.

Rack-Mount Installation:

  1. Attach the two rack-mount brackets to the sides of the switch using the screws provided in the rack-mount kit.
  2. Secure the switch into an open slot in your equipment rack using appropriate rack screws (not included).

3.3 Connecting the Switch

  1. Power Connection: Connect the provided power cord to the power inlet on the rear panel of the switch and then to an AC power outlet.
  2. Network Devices: Connect your network devices (computers, servers, access points, IP cameras, VoIP phones) to the Gigabit Ethernet ports (1-24) on the front panel using Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables.
  3. Uplink Connections: For high-speed uplinks to other switches or servers, insert compatible 10G SFP+ transceivers (not included) into the SFP+ ports (25-28) and connect fiber optic cables.

3.4 Initial Power On

Once all connections are made, power on the switch. The system LEDs will illuminate to indicate the power-on self-test (POST) process. Wait for the system LED to stabilize, indicating the switch is ready for operation.

4. Operating the Switch

4.1 Accessing the Management Interface

The GS728TXUP switch can be managed locally via a web browser or remotely using NETGEAR Insight Cloud Management.

Local Web Browser Access:

  1. Connect a computer directly to any Ethernet port on the switch.
  2. Ensure your computer's IP address is in the same subnet as the switch's default IP address (e.g., 192.168.0.x). The default IP address for the switch is typically 192.168.0.239.
  3. Open a web browser and enter the switch's IP address.
  4. Log in using the default username (admin) and password (password). You will be prompted to change the password upon first login.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Firmware Updates

Regularly check the NETGEAR support website for the latest firmware versions. Updating the firmware ensures optimal performance, security, and access to new features. Follow the instructions provided with the firmware download for the update process.

5.2 Backup and Restore Configuration

It is recommended to regularly back up your switch's configuration settings. This allows for quick restoration of your network settings in case of a device reset or replacement. The configuration can be backed up and restored through the web management interface.

5.3 Cleaning

Keep the switch clean and free from dust. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners directly on the device.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 Power Issues

  • No Power: Ensure the power cord is securely connected to the switch and a working power outlet. Verify the power outlet is active.
  • Power LED Off: If the Power LED is off, check the power connections. If the issue persists, contact support.

6.2 Network Connectivity Issues

  • No Link on Port: Check the Ethernet cable connection between the switch and the connected device. Ensure the cable is not damaged and is properly seated. Verify the connected device is powered on and functioning correctly.
  • Slow Connection: Ensure you are using appropriate cable types (Cat5e or Cat6 for Gigabit speeds). Check for network congestion or duplex mismatches.

6.3 PoE Issues

  • PoE Device Not Powering On: Verify the connected device is PoE compatible. Check the PoE status in the switch's management interface to ensure power is being delivered and the port's power budget is not exceeded.
  • Insufficient Power: If multiple high-power PoE devices are connected, ensure the total power budget of 420W is not exceeded. Consider distributing devices across more ports or using lower-power devices.

6.4 Resetting the Switch

If you encounter persistent issues or forget the login password, you can perform a factory reset. Refer to the full user manual on the NETGEAR support website for detailed instructions on performing a factory reset, as this will erase all custom configurations.
