Setup
Attaching the Lens
- Ensure your camera is turned off.
- Remove the rear lens cap from the lens and the body cap from your camera.
- Align the red dot on the lens barrel with the red dot on your camera's lens mount.
- Insert the lens into the camera mount and rotate it clockwise until it clicks into place. Do not force the lens.
Attaching the Lens Hood
The included lens hood helps to prevent flare and protect the front element. Align the lens hood with the front of the lens and twist until it locks securely. Ensure it is properly seated to avoid vignetting.
Attaching Filters
The lens features a 46mm filter thread. Gently screw compatible filters onto the front of the lens. Do not overtighten.
Operating the Lens
Focusing
The Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 is a manual-focus lens. Rotate the focus ring to adjust the focus distance. Use your camera's rangefinder or live view focusing aids for precise focus.
The minimum focusing distance is 2.3 feet (0.7 meters).
Setting Aperture
Rotate the aperture ring on the lens barrel to select your desired aperture. The aperture range is from f/1.4 to f/16. A wider aperture (smaller f-number) allows more light and creates a shallower depth of field, while a narrower aperture (larger f-number) allows less light and creates a greater depth of field.
Depth of Field Scale
The lens features a depth of field scale, which indicates the range of acceptable sharpness at different apertures and focus distances. This can be used for zone focusing or hyperfocal distance settings.
Maintenance and Care
- Cleaning the Lens: Use a soft, lint-free cloth or a lens brush to remove dust. For smudges or fingerprints, use a specialized lens cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth. Apply solution to the cloth, not directly to the lens.
- Storage: When not in use, store the lens with both front and rear caps attached in a dry, dust-free environment, preferably in its soft pouch. Avoid extreme temperatures and high humidity.
- Handling: Always handle the lens by its barrel, not by the front element. Avoid dropping or subjecting the lens to strong impacts.
- Avoid Moisture: Do not expose the lens to rain, snow, or excessive moisture. If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately with a soft cloth.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Lens not attaching to camera | Incorrect alignment; obstruction in mount | Ensure red dots are aligned. Check for debris in mount. Do not force. |
| Images are blurry/out of focus | Incorrect focus setting; camera shake | Adjust focus ring carefully. Use a tripod or faster shutter speed. |
| Vignetting (dark corners) | Improperly attached lens hood; multiple filters | Re-attach lens hood correctly. Remove unnecessary filters. |
| Dust on images | Dust on lens elements or camera sensor | Clean lens elements. If dust persists, clean camera sensor or consult service. |
