Proper installation of your Filtrete Refillable Air Filter is crucial for effective air filtration. Follow these steps to ensure correct setup:
1. Determine Correct Filter Size
Before purchasing or installing, verify the actual dimensions of your HVAC system's filter opening. While nominal sizes like 16x25x4 are common, actual sizes can vary slightly. The Filtrete 16x25x4 filter has actual dimensions of 15.88 in x 24.62 in x 4.25 in (40.3 cm x 62.5 cm x 10.8 cm).

This filter is designed to fit common media air cleaners from brands such as Honeywell, Lennox, Carrier, and Bryant. Always check your specific system's requirements.

2. Assembling the Refillable Filter
The Filtrete Refillable Air Filter frame is designed for easy assembly and filter replacement. Follow these steps:
- Open the frame: Pull the latches on the frame outward to open it.
- Expand the filter: Take a new collapsible filter and gently expand it.
- Insert filter ends: Insert one end of the expanded filter into the frame slot.
- Secure the filter: Expand the filter fully and insert the other end into the opposite frame slot.
- Close the frame: Close the frame and secure the latches. Look for a visible checkmark to confirm proper installation of the filter into the frame.

3. Installing the Filter into HVAC System
Once assembled, insert the filter frame into your HVAC system's filter slot. Ensure the air flow arrow on the filter frame points towards the blower motor of your furnace or air handler. This is critical for proper filtration.
Operating Your Air Filter
The Filtrete Refillable Air Filter continuously works to improve your indoor air quality. It is designed to capture a significant percentage of airborne particles:
- Microparticle Capture: Provides 42% more microparticle capture than MERV 12 minimum requirements (microparticles are 0.3-1.0 microns in size).
- Allergen Filtration: Certified Asthma & Allergy Friendly®, independently tested to remove over 95% pollen, 92.5% dust mite allergen, 85% cat allergen, and 50% microparticles.

Maintenance
Regular replacement of your filter refills is essential for maintaining air quality and HVAC system efficiency. The reusable frame is designed to last the lifetime of your HVAC system, up to 20 years (excluding damages, abuses, or alterations).
Filter Replacement Schedule
For optimal performance, change your refillable filter at least once every 12 months. Factors such as pet dander, allergies, and local air quality may necessitate more frequent changes.

Replacing the Filter Refill
To replace the filter refill, follow the same assembly steps in reverse to remove the old filter, then insert a new one. The collapsible design of the refills takes up 75% less space for storage and disposal, and creates 20% less waste by weight compared to traditional Filtrete Air Filters.

Filtrete Refillable Air Filter refills may cost less than comparable traditional Filtrete MPR Air Filters, based on MSRP, offering potential savings over time. Refills are available in MPR 1550 (MERV 12) and MPR 1000 (MERV 11) filtration options.

Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Filtrete Refillable Air Filter, consider the following common solutions:
- Reduced Airflow: If you notice a decrease in airflow from your vents, it may indicate a clogged filter. Replace the filter refill promptly.
- Filter Not Fitting: Double-check the actual dimensions of your HVAC system's filter slot against the filter's actual size (15.88 x 24.62 x 4.25 inches). Ensure the frame latches are securely closed after inserting the refill.
- Unusual Noises: Ensure the filter is properly seated in the HVAC system and the access door is securely closed. A loose filter can cause rattling.
- Persistent Odors: While the filter captures many particles, it may not eliminate all odors. If odors persist, consider professional HVAC inspection.
- Filter Life Shorter Than Expected: High levels of airborne contaminants (e.g., heavy pet dander, construction dust, smoke) can shorten filter life. Consider more frequent checks and replacements in such environments.
