3. Safety Information

  • Electrical Safety: Ensure your computer system is powered off and unplugged from the wall outlet before installation or maintenance.
  • Liquid Handling: Use only approved coolants for liquid cooling systems. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. In case of contact, rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Component Handling: Handle the CPU water block and other computer components with care to prevent damage. Avoid touching the cold plate surface directly.
  • Professional Installation: If you are unsure about any step of the installation process, consult a qualified technician or refer to EKWB's official support resources.
  • Leak Testing: Always perform a leak test for at least 24 hours before powering on your system after installing new liquid cooling components.

4. Setup & Installation

This section outlines the general installation procedure. For detailed, up-to-date instructions and specific motherboard considerations, always refer to the official EKWB installation manual available on their website. Incorrect installation can lead to component damage.

4.1. Preparation

  1. Power off your computer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Remove your existing CPU cooler and clean any residual thermal paste from the CPU IHS (Integrated Heat Spreader) using isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.
  3. Identify the correct mounting bracket for your CPU socket (AMD AM5 or Intel LGA 1700/1851). The water block may require internal re-orientation for optimal flow depending on the platform. Consult the official EKWB guide for this step.

4.2. Mounting Bracket Installation

Attach the appropriate mounting bracket to the water block. Ensure the bracket is oriented correctly for your motherboard and CPU socket type.

Important Note for AM5 Users:

Some AM5 motherboards may have protruding screw mounts that affect mounting pressure. It is crucial to ensure proper contact between the water block's cold plate and the CPU IHS. Refer to EKWB's official installation guides for specific AM5 motherboard compatibility and any necessary adjustments to avoid damage to your CPU or motherboard.

4.3. Thermal Paste Application

  1. Apply a small amount of the included EK-Loop Thermal Paste NGP to the center of the CPU IHS.
  2. Spread the thermal paste evenly across the entire surface of the IHS using a non-conductive spreader or a clean finger in a thin, uniform layer.

4.4. Water Block Mounting

  1. Carefully place the water block onto the CPU, aligning the mounting holes with the motherboard's backplate or standoffs.
  2. Secure the water block using the provided screws, springs, and washers. Tighten the screws in a diagonal pattern (e.g., top-left, bottom-right, top-right, bottom-left) gradually until snug. Do not overtighten.
  3. Ensure even mounting pressure for optimal thermal contact.

4.5. Connecting to the Liquid Cooling Loop

  1. Install appropriate fittings (not included) into the G1/4" ports on the water block. Ensure they are tightened securely to prevent leaks.
  2. Connect the water block into your custom liquid cooling loop. The recommended flow direction is typically into the center port and out of the side port, but the block is designed to perform well in either orientation.

4.6. D-RGB Connection

The EK-Quantum Velocity 3 features addressable RGB (D-RGB) lighting. Connect the 3-pin 5V digital LED header cable to a compatible D-RGB header on your motherboard or a dedicated D-RGB controller.

  • D-RGB cable length: 500mm
  • D-RGB connector: 3-pin 5V digital LED header (Pinout: +5V | Digital | Blocked | Ground)

5. Operating Instructions

Once the water block is installed and integrated into your liquid cooling loop, and a successful leak test has been performed, you can power on your system.

  1. System Startup: Power on your computer.
  2. BIOS/UEFI Check: Verify that your CPU temperature readings are normal in your system's BIOS/UEFI.
  3. Software Monitoring: Use monitoring software (e.g., HWMonitor, AIDA64) to observe CPU temperatures under idle and load conditions.
  4. D-RGB Control: If connected to a motherboard header, use your motherboard's RGB software to customize the lighting effects. If connected to a dedicated controller, use its respective software or physical controls.

The EK-Quantum Velocity 3 is designed for continuous operation within a properly maintained liquid cooling system. Monitor your system's temperatures regularly to ensure optimal performance.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and performance of your liquid cooling system and the EK-Quantum Velocity 3 water block.

  • Coolant Replacement: Replace the coolant in your loop every 6-12 months, or as recommended by your coolant manufacturer.
  • System Flush: Periodically flush your entire liquid cooling loop to remove any accumulated debris or residue.
  • Water Block Cleaning: If performance degrades or visible buildup occurs, the water block can be disassembled for cleaning. Use distilled water and a soft brush to clean the micro-fins. Avoid abrasive materials. Refer to EKWB's official guides for disassembly and reassembly procedures.
  • Visual Inspection: Regularly inspect tubing, fittings, and the water block for any signs of leaks, corrosion, or damage.

7. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
High CPU Temperatures
  • Insufficient thermal paste or poor application
  • Uneven mounting pressure
  • Air bubble in the water block
  • Insufficient pump flow or clogged loop
  • Incorrect flow direction (less common for this block)
  • Reapply thermal paste
  • Re-mount the water block, ensuring even pressure
  • Tilt system to dislodge air bubbles, run pump at full speed
  • Check pump operation, inspect loop for blockages, clean radiator/block
  • Verify loop configuration
Coolant Leakage
  • Loose fittings
  • Damaged O-rings
  • Cracked component
  • Tighten all fittings (do not overtighten)
  • Inspect and replace O-rings
  • Identify and replace damaged component
D-RGB Lighting Not Working
  • Incorrect D-RGB header connection
  • Software issue
  • Damaged D-RGB cable or LEDs
  • Ensure 3-pin 5V D-RGB header is correctly connected (not 12V RGB)
  • Update or reinstall RGB control software
  • Contact EKWB support if hardware is suspected
