Safety Information

  • Always disconnect power to the skimmer and any connected devices before performing maintenance or handling.
  • This appliance is designed for indoor use only, specifically for marine aquarium applications.
  • Ensure all electrical connections are dry and away from water splashes. Use a drip loop for all power cords.
  • Do not operate the skimmer if any part is damaged, especially the power cord or pump.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • The skimmer must be placed in a sump or filter compartment with adequate water level.

Setup

  1. Assembly: Follow the detailed assembly instructions provided in the separate manual for the physical construction of the skimmer body, pump, and collection cup. Ensure all connections are secure.
  2. Placement: Position the skimmer in your aquarium sump. Ensure there is sufficient space around the skimmer for maintenance and proper airflow. The skimmer requires a stable water level in the sump for optimal performance. Refer to the specifications for recommended operating water depth.
  3. Controller Connection: Connect the skimmer's PSK DC pump to the Red Sea ReefRun Duo Pump Controller (sold separately). Ensure the connection is firm and waterproof.
  4. Power Connection: Connect the ReefRun Duo Pump Controller to a suitable power outlet. Ensure a drip loop is formed with the power cord to prevent water from reaching the outlet.
  5. Initial Water Level Adjustment: Once powered on, the skimmer will begin to draw water and air. Adjust the skimmer's water level regulator (if applicable) to achieve a foam head that rises into the neck of the collection cup. During the initial break-in period, the skimmer may produce inconsistent foam.
  6. Break-in Period: Allow the skimmer to operate for several days (typically 1-2 weeks) to break in. During this period, residual manufacturing oils and surface tension in the new plastics will dissipate, allowing for stable foam production. Adjustments may be necessary during this time.

Operating Instructions

ReefBeat App Control

The ReefRun DC Smart Skimmer 300 is designed to be controlled via the Red Sea ReefBeat App, which connects to your ReefRun Duo Controller. Download the ReefBeat App from your device's app store and follow the in-app instructions to pair your controller and skimmer.

Self-Leveling Technology

The skimmer features advanced self-leveling technology to prevent over-skimming and collection cup spills. This system is activated when the foam's wetness in the neck exceeds a user-defined "over-skim" threshold. The pump's intensity is automatically reduced to prevent overflow and then gradually adjusted back to the preset intensity as foam wetness stabilizes. This ensures consistent and efficient waste removal.

Adjusting Skimmer Performance

  • Pump Intensity: Use the ReefBeat App to adjust the DC pump's intensity. Higher intensity generally produces a drier, darker skimmate, while lower intensity results in a wetter, lighter skimmate.
  • Skim Wetness: The skimmer's physical water level regulator allows for fine-tuning the foam height in the neck. Adjust this to achieve your desired skim wetness.
  • Monitoring: Regularly monitor the collection cup for skimmate production. Adjust settings as needed based on your aquarium's bioload and desired skimmate consistency.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for the efficient and long-term operation of your skimmer.

  1. Collection Cup Cleaning (Weekly/Bi-weekly):

Empty and clean the collection cup regularly. Skimmate can accumulate and reduce efficiency. Rinse with warm water and a brush to remove any residue. Ensure the overflow sensor is clean and free of debris.

Figure 6: A close-up view of the skimmer's collection cup, showing the internal components and foam level markings.

  2. Skimmer Neck Cleaning (Monthly):

Over time, a film will build up on the inside of the skimmer neck, which can hinder foam production. Remove the collection cup and use a soft brush or sponge to clean the inside of the skimmer neck. Some models include an integrated neck cleaner for easier maintenance.

  3. Pump Cleaning (Every 3-6 Months):

Disconnect the pump from power and remove it from the skimmer. Disassemble the pump (impeller, volute) and clean all components thoroughly with a brush and warm water. For stubborn deposits, a mild acid solution (like vinegar) can be used, followed by a thorough rinse. Reassemble carefully.

  4. Air Intake Silencer:

Periodically check and clean the air intake silencer to ensure unrestricted airflow. Blockages can reduce skimmer performance.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No Foam Production / Poor Skimming
  • New skimmer (break-in period)
  • Low water level in sump
  • Air intake blocked
  • Pump issue (clogged, damaged impeller)
  • Excessive additives/medications in water
  • Skimmer settings too low
  • Allow 1-2 weeks for break-in.
  • Adjust sump water level to recommended height.
  • Clean air intake silencer.
  • Inspect and clean pump impeller.
  • Perform water changes; avoid using oily additives.
  • Increase pump intensity via ReefBeat App.
Excessive Wet Foam / Overflow
  • High water level in sump
  • Skimmer settings too high
  • Recent water change or hand in tank
  • Self-leveling sensor dirty or malfunctioning
  • Lower sump water level.
  • Decrease pump intensity via ReefBeat App or adjust physical water level regulator.
  • Wait for water surface tension to normalize.
  • Clean the self-leveling sensor on the collection cup.
Loud Operation
  • Air intake partially blocked
  • Pump impeller dirty or damaged
  • Vibrations against sump walls
  • Clean air intake silencer.
  • Inspect and clean pump impeller. Replace if damaged.
  • Ensure skimmer is not touching sump walls; use vibration dampening mat if necessary.
