5. Setup

There are two primary methods to set up your RE653BE Range Extender: using the WPS button or via the TP-Link Tether app.

Method 1: Using the WPS Button (Recommended for quick setup)

  1. Plug In: Plug the extender into an electrical outlet near your main router.
  2. Press WPS on Router: Press the WPS button on your main router. Refer to your router's manual for the exact location.
  3. Press WPS on Extender: Within two minutes, press the WPS button on your RE653BE extender. The Signal LEDs on the extender should begin to flash.
  4. Relocate: Once the Signal LEDs become solid blue, the connection is successful. Unplug the extender and relocate it to a suitable location between your router and the Wi-Fi dead zone. Ensure the Signal LEDs remain solid blue for optimal performance.

6. Operating Modes

The RE653BE can operate in two modes:

Range Extender Mode

In this mode, the RE653BE extends the wireless signal of your existing router, providing increased coverage. Devices connect wirelessly to the extender, which then relays data to and from the main router.

Diagram illustrating the Range Extender Mode and Access Point Mode for the RE653BE. In Range Extender Mode, the device wirelessly connects to the router and extends Wi-Fi to other devices. In Access Point Mode, it connects to the router via a 2.5 Gbps LAN cable and broadcasts Wi-Fi.

Figure 6.1: Range Extender Mode (top) and Access Point Mode (bottom) connection diagrams.

Access Point Mode

In Access Point (AP) mode, the RE653BE connects to your router via an Ethernet cable and transforms your wired network into a wireless one. This is ideal for extending Wi-Fi coverage in areas where running an Ethernet cable is feasible, providing a more stable and potentially faster connection than wireless extension.

7. Maintenance

  • Firmware Updates: Regularly check for and install firmware updates via the TP-Link Tether app or TP-Link website to ensure optimal performance and security.
  • Placement: Ensure the extender is placed in an open area, away from obstructions and sources of interference (e.g., microwaves, cordless phones).
  • Cleaning: Clean the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners.

8. Troubleshooting

No Internet Access After Setup

  • Verify that your main router is working correctly and has internet access.
  • Check the Signal LEDs on the extender. If they are not solid blue, try relocating the extender closer to the router or re-run the setup process.
  • Ensure your devices are connected to the extender's network.

Poor Signal Strength

  • Relocate the extender to a position that is roughly halfway between your router and the area with poor signal.
  • Avoid placing the extender near large metal objects, thick walls, or other electronic devices that may cause interference.
  • Adjust the extender's antennas for better reception.

Resetting the Extender

If the extender is not functioning as expected, you may need to reset it to factory default settings. With the extender powered on, use a pin to press and hold the Reset button for approximately 5 seconds until the LEDs flash.
