Operating Instructions
1. Grinding Coffee Beans
- Fill Bean Hopper: Open the lid of the bean hopper and fill it with fresh, roasted coffee beans.
- Select Grind Size: Rotate the grind size selector to your desired fineness. A finer grind is generally preferred for espresso (e.g., settings 5-10). Experiment to find the best setting for your beans.
- Insert Portafilter: Place the desired filter basket (single or double) into the portafilter. Lock the portafilter into the grinder cradle.
- Grind: Press the Grind button. The grinder will dispense coffee into the portafilter. Press again to stop. Ensure the portafilter is filled but not overflowing.
- Tamp: Remove the portafilter from the grinder cradle. Use the provided tamper to press the ground coffee firmly and evenly. A consistent tamp is crucial for good espresso extraction.
2. Brewing Espresso
- Insert Portafilter: After grinding and tamping, lock the portafilter firmly into the group head (the brewing area).
- Place Cup: Place your espresso cup(s) on the drip tray directly under the portafilter spouts.
- Select Shot: Press the Single or Double button. The machine will pre-infuse the coffee, then begin brewing.
- Stop Brewing: The machine will automatically stop after dispensing a pre-set volume. You can also manually stop brewing by pressing the same button again.
- Remove Portafilter: Carefully remove the hot portafilter, discard the used coffee grounds (puck), and rinse the portafilter and basket.
Note: If using pre-ground coffee, skip the grinding steps and fill the filter basket directly with pre-ground espresso coffee before tamping.
3. Dispensing Hot Water
To dispense hot water for tea or Americanos:
- Place a cup under the steam wand.
- Press the Hot Water button.
- Press the Hot Water button again to stop the flow.
4. Steaming Milk
To create frothed milk for lattes and cappuccinos:
- Prepare Milk: Fill the milk pitcher with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy) up to just below the spout.
- Activate Steam: Press the Steam button. The indicator light will flash as the machine heats up to steaming temperature. Once solid, it's ready.
- Purge Steam Wand: Briefly turn the Steam knob to release any condensed water, then turn it off.
- Froth Milk: Immerse the tip of the steam wand just below the surface of the milk. Turn the Steam knob to full power. Angle the pitcher to create a swirling motion.
- Monitor Temperature: Continue steaming until the milk reaches your desired temperature and texture (typically around 60-65°C or when the pitcher is too hot to touch comfortably).
- Stop Steaming: Turn the Steam knob off, then remove the pitcher.
- Clean Steam Wand: Immediately wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth to prevent milk residue from drying. Briefly purge steam again to clear any internal blockages.
Maintenance and Cleaning
Regular cleaning and maintenance will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your espresso machine.
Daily Cleaning
- Portafilter and Filter Baskets: After each use, remove the portafilter, discard coffee grounds, and rinse thoroughly under hot water.
- Steam Wand: Wipe immediately after each use with a damp cloth and purge steam briefly.
- Drip Tray: Empty and rinse the drip tray daily or when the indicator floats up.
- Water Tank: Rinse the water tank daily and refill with fresh water.
- Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
Weekly / Bi-Weekly Cleaning
- Group Head: Use a group head cleaning brush to remove any coffee grounds from the group head seal and shower screen.
- Bean Hopper: Empty any remaining beans and wipe the inside of the hopper with a dry cloth.
Descaling
Depending on water hardness and usage, descaling should be performed every 2-3 months. Use a commercial descaling solution specifically designed for espresso machines and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Descaling removes mineral buildup that can affect machine performance and taste.
